Munish Narula Opening an Indian Bistro in South Philadelphia

After a series of profitable quarters for Tashan, Munish Narula is getting back to opening restaurants. His next restaurant will not be a Tiffin or a Tashan, but rather a Tiffin Bistro, slated for 11th and Federal at the former Kris. Narula declined to reveal the exact location until the lease was signed but did fill us in on several other details.

The Indian bistro will have a liquor license and a more upscale feel from a regular Tiffin, but not as high-end as Tashan. Narula stressed this would be a whole new concept as he doesn’t want to cannibalize Tiffin’s delivery business or the experience at Tashan. Expect a more traditional Indian menu but not the dishes you see on most Indian restaurant menus around town. Narula is bringing in a chef from Junoon in New York who has also worked at Amber India in San Francisco as well as London’s Cinnamon Club. Tashan’s Sylva Senat will be involved as well in fine tuning the menu and plating.

Narula hopes to sign the lease before the end of the week and open six weeks after that. As Kris, the restaurant had room for fifty people, plus ten at the bar.

Good. So irritating that Tiffin doesn’t deliver to South Philly. I vote for a location in Newbold!

In my opinion Ekta’s quite a bit better (not to mention far more consistent in quality) and delivers to Pennsport so perhaps Newbold/Point Breeze too? They do take ages but it’s worth it!

      • Marianne

How far south do they go?

  • erik

    it’s at Kris.

Just sayin’: doesn’t want to cannibalize his delivery business in a location where he doesn’t deliver?

    Blaze a trail in Pennsport!

      How about Rooney’s?

Stopped in to the barber shop across the street from Rooney’s – she hasn’t heard a thing about that place. There is paper on the windows (nudge nudge foobooz)

So South Philly will still be lacking a plain old Indian restaurant for takeout and delivery.

Ekta should open on Snyder Ave.

  • Shut It

Yeah I would love a simple, affordable indian restaurant around here

How would opening a Tiffin in South Philly cannibalize business when Tiffin does not deliver in South Philly? This is great news, but I hope the new bistro has reasonably priced delivery as an option too. I am a fan of Tashan and upscale Indian as a concept, but I can already walk or take the subway to Tashan when I’m in the mood for that. What I can’t do is order some halfway decent Indian for delivery or takeout. (Yes, I know Tashan delivers, but it is too expensive for something you’re going to eat out of a takeout container on your couch)

My understanding is they deliver to the northern edges of South Philly (Queen village, bella vista) so there would be some cannibalization as, assuming they take over the Kris space, those hoods are quite close.

      • HD73

If it is the Kris space, that would create a small amount of cannibalization, but I would think the savings in time and gas they would realize from being located so much closer to that neighborhood would offset the cannibalization to a large extent. It would also open a huge new area for delivery that currently has no good options (Tiffin doesn’t deliver south of Washington west of Broad or Reed East of Broad).

More importantly, if it is the Kris space, this will definitely cannibalize a significant amount business from Tashan. I’m not going to go out for twice as many sit-down Indian meals after “Tiffin Bistro” gets built, I’m going to choose between Tashan and the new place. A straight-up Tiffin would not have this effect.

Wow Harrison Ford lost a lot of hair huh?

  • tsarstruck

Eater, which I won’t link to in fear of angering the Foobooz gods, has it straight from Narula that there will be delivery. It’s just that he didn’t want to cannibalize Tiffin’s demographic.

  • a

Indian Restaurant on South St (http://www.indianrestaurantpa.com/) delivers to south philly. Its not quite Tiffin, but it does the job.

You did not bring a chef from Janoon! You brought a cook! There’s a big difference between a cook and chef Munish stop Lying to everybody
