Chink’s Steaks Is Now Joe’s Steaks + Soda Shop

Philadelphia cheesesteak institution, Chink’s Steaks is dropping the controversial name the business has had since it opened in 1949. Joe Groh, who worked at Chink’s for twenty years before purchasing the business in 1999 is rebranding the spot as Joe’s Steaks + Soda Shop. Named for the original owner, Sam “Chink” Sherman, the name resonated for the man and not as a slur. But today, Groh says “it is very important to me, my family and the entire staff that we no longer inadvertently alienate anyone in the Philly community. We are very excited to move forward under the new name, Joe’s Steaks + Soda Shop.”

The new name also stresses the shop’s devotion to sodas, milkshakes and egg creams, which has been part of the business since its opening. Groh looks at the rebrand as a chance to create his own legacy, one he hopes to pass down to his son Patrick, who has been working at the cheesesteak shop since 2008.

That is total BS. Who cares if someone gets offended by your name. You’ve been there over 20 years…..f@&k ’em if they don’t like it Joe

  • It probably makes me insensitive. But this is stupid.

But as long as they don’t change anything about the steaks, I’ll survive.

  • Alimentarian

I would have gone with “Geno’s Casa del Bistec,” but whatever.

  • nightman

the real reason they are finally changing the name is they want to expand into other parts of the city that are not as accepting (I don’t blame them) of the name.

  • Baloo

This is dumb. They should have kept that name.

  • I predict that this will hurt the business. … the expansion/franchising will not work because there is no brand equity in Joes steaks and soda. I predict they will eventually change it back.

  • Patti

Absolutely ridiculous that someone has to change the name of their shop, which has been around for YEARS and was the original owners “nickname” due to “politically correctness”!!!

  • geo

It should have held out and continued its business as CHINKS,
it was the nickname of a former owner, and founder of a Wissinoming
