Maida & Hartranft Taking Over The Butcher & The Brewer Space

It has been a tumultuous time for the one time Doc Watson’s at 216 S 11th Street. After decades as Watson’s, the address housed Blue Bear Tavern, The Boilermaker and The Butcher & The Brewer in short succession. Now the two-floor space has a new chance at success as Brendan Hartranft and Leigh Maida (Memphis Taproom, Local 44, Resurrection Ale House) are going to be taking over the space.

The details are light right now, no name, no chef yet. Maida tells us they are aiming to open by mid-March, before her second child is due (The couple raced to open Resurrection before their first child). We figure it will take that long just to remove the wax buildup from all those candles of previous incarnations.

Wait. This can’t be true. Matt Schwartz told us he was closing Butcher because the landlord was turning the place into offices. You mean he lied? I refuse to believe that! I wonder if he lied about anything else???

  • Alimentarian

I thought Butcher and Singer was still open and doing well?

hopefully they have better “luck” than the farcical year of Blue Bear – Boilermaker, Butcher & Brewer.

They have a much better track record for staying open, and it’s a great space with a great location.

I hope they put fried chicken on the menu, win some awards then stop selling it.

Hopefully they fix the air conditioning.

I hope the bridge and Speed Line crowd stays far away.

I hope the hipster crowd stays far away… “look at my tight pants, unkempt facial hair and instagram filters”
