Fun With Pictures: Another Vintage Stephen Starr Photo

Earlier this week, an old photo of Philadelphia restaurateur Stephen Starr surfaced on Twitter and was picked up by outlets like Philebrity and Eater. Starr tells me that the photo in question is from his senior year at Gateway Regional High School in lovely Woodbury, New Jersey. (Had no idea he was a Jersey boy.) He also says that he was blown away when he saw it last night.

To continue the tradition of posting fun photos from the past, I found the above one of Starr in the January 1978 issue of Philadelphia magazine, which also included an item about Jessica Savitch dancing during the rolling credits on Saturday Night Live, a preview of a robot rock group called Gear Train, and an ad for Panasonic’s “in-dash push button cassette with auto reverse and locking fast forward and reverse.”

Starr appears as one of “78 People to Watch in ’78“, enjoying the company of a now-incarcerated Vince Fumo (“If Buddy Cianfrani gets convicted, look for Fumo to go for his spot”) and Mick Jagger (“Along with other rock superstars Peter Frampton, Rick Wakeman and Paul Simon, he’s bringing professional soccer back to town” — say what?!).

As for Starr’s own writeup, it went as follows:

He’s the owner of Stars, Philadelphia’s newest and hottest nightspot. But you’re liable to hear from him in another area. A former producer of commercials and WCAU-TV staffer, he’s now an independent television producer currently working on a couple of new game show concepts.
