Around the Web: Blackbird Pizzeria

People are buzzing about Blackbird Pizzeria. Living on the Vedge and Mac & Cheese have plenty of praise for the pizza. And Yelp, well vegetarian Yelpers are thrilled to finally have a good vegan cheesesteak.

Mac & Cheese praises the vegan pizzas, also placing it alongside or slightly ahead of Zavino and Stella. [Mac & Cheese]

Though potato, pepperoni and “taco” slices are already earning shout-outs at all-vegan Blackbird Pizzeria, it seems what local veg-heads were really yearning for was another vegan cheesesteak option. “Finally, a restaurant in Philadelphia that knows how to make a goddamn vegan cheesesteak,” writes Elite vegan yelper Jay D.  “If this is what you seek, go here. Do not go anywhere else. You can tell these guys are from Philly.”

Three mentions of a BBQ portobello sandwich balance out three complaints about Blackbird’s choice of sandwich roll.  Non-vegan Elite Dan F took especial exception: “The roll, wonderfully fresh as it was, was way too prominent a feature of the sandwich. I felt I was eating lots of roll. And not just any roll, but a HEAVILY FLOURED ROLL. As much as might be expected in an I Love Lucy baking accident.”

But it’s predictably the Daiya vegan cheese that really divides Blackbird fans from foes. Made primarily from the starchy tuberous root of the Cassava plant, Daiya was created especially to fill the pizza-less void many vegans are desperate to fill. Elite Mishel C plays it straight: “The taste of the cheese is a little odd, but no vegan cheeseis going to be amazing — that being said, it’s by far the closest thing I’ve had to a decent replica.”
