Philadelphia Named Among Best for Street Food

Photo via UWISHUNU

Budget Travel names Philadelphia 4th in the world for street food.

The nation’s first capital is also home to some of its oldest and most beloved portable fare: soft pretzels, Italian ices, and, of course, cheesesteaks, now being reimagined in Vietnamese and Mexican versions.

The top 5 looked like this:

  1. Portland, OR
  2. Los Angeles, CA
  3. Ensenada, Mexico
  4. Philadelphia, PA
  5. Puerto Rico

Ugh! Unless you are in UniCity, Philly has atrocious street food! The sausage/hot dog/meatball/steak cart proliferation in Center City is close to inedible. I’d take street food in any latin american country over Philly in a heartbeat. Suck it CNN/Budget Travel!

or south-east asian country….. bangkok, hello???????

Wow, a positive Philly story and still, there are negative comments.

Angry Bob – calm down a bit, smile, and try sampling some of our city’s cuisine. The definition of street food used by the article goes beyond just carts; it extends to stands or places that are easily accessible from the street or sidewalks.

In other words, in addition to the many terrific trucks throughout the city (the good places in University City, a couple of places near Temple, the Mexican food truck on North Broad, King of Falafel, Honest Tom, Buttercream Cupcake Truck, etc.), you also have the cheesesteak and pizza places on South Street and the Italian Market. Go read the cnn article if you haven’t. If you don’t recognize and appreciate all the great street food fare we have, particularly in the Italian Market, then you are a fool.

I’m with Angry Bob and V-burp. I love Philly, and I love Philly’s food scene, but this is kind of a joke. How is Philadelphia at #4 for street food and Singapore is only at #14?

  • Jimmy

    Street meat.
