Hot Sandwich Safari Finals Shaping Up

Each year Glen Macnow exhaustively tracks down the best in a Philly food category. Last year he crowned Paesano’s Daddy Wad as the best hoagie in the area.

This year he’s back looking for the best hot specialty sandwich. That means no hoagies or cheesesteaks need apply. It also means lots of great hot roast beef and pork.

On Thursday the Hot Sandwich Safari Finals will be held at The Fieldhouse at 11th and Filbert. The top six finishers will be present to make their sandwiches.

Celebrity judges will join Glen Macnow to crown the champion. Listeners who show up will also have a chance to taste the sandwiches and crown the Listeners’ Choice Award.

Macnow’s top six currently looks like this:

  1. Roast Beef on the Outs, Old Original Nick’s Roast Beef
  2. The Schmitter, McNally’s Tavern
  3. Chicken Italiano, Shank’s Pier 40
  4. Hot Pastrami on Rye, Hershel’s East Side Deli
  5. Hot Roast Pork, Carlino’s Specialty Foods
  6. Meatball Sandwich, Pastaficio Homemade Pasta Co.

    Where’s Paesano’s?

Oops, it’d help if I read the entire entry.

MacNow completely lost credibility by putting Nick’s on the list. Give me a break – how about some overcooked steam chipped on a roll that’s too big for the sandwich. Been there twice and have been real disappointed both times. Not even in the top 5 of hot roast beef sandwiches in the area. And not having John’s re: roast pork? Are you kidding me? It’s the best sandwich in town, hands down.

John’s won for cheesesteaks and Paesano’s won for hoagies – I think he calls it pretty straight. He liked the Nick sandwich, a lot of people do. Lost credibility is a bit extreme (ignoring the fact that being on WIP loses credibility)

  • The Arista at Paesano’s 15 points lower than the Nick’s Roast Beef? That is ridiculous. No offense, I love Nick’s, it’s a fine sandwich, but the Arista blows every sandwich I’ve had in Philadelphia clear out of the water. I appreciate what Glenn does with these contests, they’re a lot of fun. But the Arista an 82? Please. It’s a 100. It is, in all honesty, the best sandwich I have ever had in my life.

Mc nally’s Schmitter is the best sandwich in Philly. it is like Christmas morning in your mouth.

I’m with Johnny Goodtimes (I always wanted to say that).
    Paesanos’ Arista is numero uno.
