Two New Cafes in Fairmount Park

The Trolley Car Café and the Cedars House repurpose Fairmount Park properties

Earlier this month, two new cafés opened in Fairmount Park, transforming forgotten historic buildings into food and recreation hubs. The new Cedars House on Forbidden Drive (pictured) offers two different kids of menus — one full of eats like sandwiches, salads, and healthy snacks, and one of fitness services like runners’ training workshops and yoga classes. On the other, less fitness-centric hand, the Trolley Car Café at the Bathey House in East Falls features a menu of nuanced American comfort food (think a Monte Cristo on a French toast bagel). A spin-off of the Mount Airy diner, the Fairmount Café has green fixtures like a solar-powered water-heating system. In addition to breakfast, lunch, and dinner, they offer on-premises bike rentals from Valley Forge Bikes.

Both cafés were realized with help from the Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust, which funds the restoration and maintenance of the buildings.
