James Beard Semifinalists Announced


James Beard Foundation AwardsToday the James Beard Foundation announced semifinalists for its 2010 awards. The Oscars of the restaurant industry are a big deal and Philadelphia is well represented in all categories.

It’s a family affair for David Gilberg and Carla Goncalves as Gilberg is nominated for Rising Star Chef and his wife Carla is up for Outstanding Pastry Chef. Gilberg is also up for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic and their Koo Zee Doo is in the mix for Best New Restaurant.

The Rising Star Chef of the Year sees David Gilberg of Koo Zee Doo, Charles “Chip” Roman of Blackfish and Lee Styer of Fond nominated.

Pierre Calmel’s Bibou gets recognition in the Best New Restaurant category as does Jose Garces’ Chifa and Koo Zee Doo.

Stephen Starr is nominated for Outstanding Restaurateur and Marc Vetri is nominated for Outstanding Chef and his Vetri is up for Outstanding Restaurant.

Outstanding Pastry Chef sees two local nominees, Carla Goncalves of Koo Zee Doo and Jessie Prawlucki of Fond.

Tria gets recognition with a nomination for Outstanding Wine Service. Tria’s Michael McCaulley gets a nomination for Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional as does Moore Brothers’ Greg Moore.

The Fountain Restaurant at Four Seasons is in the Outstanding Service category as is Vetri.

In the Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic category we find James Burke, James; Pierre Calmels, Bibou; Terence Feury, Fork; David Gilberg, Koo Zee Doo; Jeff Michaud, Osteria; Konstantinos Pistillides, Kanella; Michael Solomonov, Zahav.
