Devil’s Den has new glass growlers in and tonight they’re free to the first 75 people to buy a growler of Sixpoint beer tonight. On tap from Sixpoint:

  • Double Sweet Action
  • Diesel Stout
  • Masons Black Wheat
  • Righteous Rye
  • Bengali Tiger IPA
  • Sweet Action
  • Apollo Wheat
  • Otis Oatmeal Stout
  • Brownstone

Fills will be around $14 with Double Sweet Action going for more.

I know breweries/brewpubs often won’t fill other growlers (although I’ve heard that some will exchange growlers), but what about the bars like Devil’s Den? Do they require their own growler or will they fill the growler you already have even if it has some other label on it?

I know Grey Lodge will fill other growlers.

The rule of thumb is that bars will fill others growlers and breweries/brew pubs will not fill others. This isn’t because breweries are looking to make an extra buck but is related to PA/Federal labeling guidelines where everything that goes out the door has to have an approved label.

Since the rules and regulations are pretty unclear, some brewers will exchange growlers to keep a customer happy.

Devil’s Den will fill any growler. We do have some for purchase if you need, but we are about selling the beer, not the glass.

Lancaster Brewing Company will fill any growler, as we found out last month….but that’s a bit of a drive. And we didn’t bring our growler because we thought otherwise!

Dock Street filled out Victory growler last night.

    With the wrong beer.

Was just there – Double Sweet Action Growler poured improperly = $20.50. So much for the deal…

  • Dan

    $21.50 that is

Great night at Devil’s Den– received growler gratis, with cool sixpoint logo art on one side, devil’s den logo on the other. Had mine filled with Sweet Action (not Double) for $14. Mine was filled perfectly and I heard no complaints from anyone else in my party. Great event!

I had a conversation about growler refills and labeling a couple months ago (I think with ‘Joe Sixpack’). My thought for the local breweries/brewpubs that want to help alleviate the labeling concern would be to have a supply of paper labels that meet requirements and glue them right onto whatever generic/blank growler a customer presents. Paper labeled bottles are the standard, so I can’t imagine much difference for a securely attached paper label on a growler (no sticky-note type glue, although that would be simpler for both brewer and customer).

Thanks for the info re: Devil’s Den. I’ll be sure to pick up some brew from them, too.

Also, The Institute had expressed an interest in filling growlers in the past, but I don’t know if they have an official policy on doing so.

@Dan, I am sorry you didn’t enjoy yourself or your free growler, but unfortunately the Double Sweet Action is considerably more than the normal Sixpoint beers. I believe we were charging $19.50 plus tax would be the $21.50 you paid. I also see that you were home and able to post your complaint by 7:45 so you must have gotten one of the first growlers out of the keg when it was tapped. This would most likely account for the excess foam when pouring the growler.

Hope the growler gets some good use, and I hope the staff does a better job next time you come by.
