Opening Update: Flying Monkey

A second Flying Monkey is about to land at a new outpost in Center City. The cupcake emporium will bring its sophisticated sweets (think dark chocolate with Jim Bean Buttercream frosting) to 1112 Locust Street as soon as next week. Owner Rebecca Michaels says they are about 80 percent done, and the only thing holding them up is city inspections. (Surprised?)

The spot will serve the same treats as the Reading Terminal Market location, where baking for both venues will happen each day. But the Locust Street stop will offer diners something they’ve never had before: a serene café environment, which for many is a welcome change of pace from the bustle of Reading Terminal. Michaels is especially enthused about the new patio, which will provide outdoor seating for 15.

In about three months, the menu will expand to include “light lunchy stuff,” like soup and sandwiches. Good thing — you’ll always want to save room for dessert. Flying Money Patisserie, 1112 Locust Street, 215-592-6505.
