Drinking

Sounds Like Summer: OK, so as you probably know, there's a National _______ Day for pretty much everything that exists, so why not watermelon? This Friday is National Watermelon Day. And in addition to a watermelon-eating contest, we found a cool Philly bar that's offering specials on watermelon beers (What, you never had a watermelon beer? Live a little!) for $4, along with watermelon whisky sours and watermelon mojitos for $5. Go here to see where you should be drinking this Friday. Details

When the 80s Come A Knockin': There are a whole lot of guilty pleasures all rolled into one this weekend in Philadelphia as the Party in Fairmount Park hits with New Edition, Salt-N-Pepa and El DeBarge. And you know what? I kind of want to go. Kind of. Details

family

Center City Playdate: Many of the parents among you may have seen the Grateful Dead, but far fewer have likely seen the Grateful Dad band, a more recent outfit of Philadelphia dads that play cool tunes for tots. This weekend, they're at the Comcast Center for the Center City Playdate, along with cupcake decorating courtesy of Termini Bros. and gaming (as in video gaming) from Sony. Just don't let anything slip about your previous activities at the Dead shows, or you may have a lot of explaining to do. Details

Literary and Lectures

Barlett & Steele: Once upon a time, Donald Barlett and James Steele were star investigative reporters for the Inquirer, then Time magazine, and then Vanity Fair, where they still write from time to time. This Thursday, they come to the Central Library to talk about their new book,The Betrayal of the American Dream, in which they tell us why our economic future sucks. Details

LGBTQ

Phreak N Queer: You'd think that a festival named Phreak N Queer that's dedicated to showcasing the artistic talents of gay, lesbian and transgendered musicians would find its home in Philadelphia's Gayborhood. Not so. The 2nd Annual PNQ steers clear of drag shows and late-night dance parties on 13th Street in favor of a hip-hop/punk party at Milkboy and Hotrods & Mustang Sallies: A Queer Sock Hop at Johnny Brenda's, among other events.
