Geno Smith Delivers Impressive 40-Time

INDIANAPOLIS — After running for just 167 yards during his senior season, Geno Smith faced some questions about his athleticism entering this week’s Combine.

But he answered those today, clocking in with a 40 time of 4.56 seconds, the fastest among all the quarterbacks here.

As a point of reference, Colin Kaepernick ran a 4.53 a couple years ago, and Russell Wilson ran a 4.55 in 2012.

In other words, even though Smith was not running the read-option last year at West Virginia, he still has good athleticism.

“I think I have the skill set that fits any offense,” Smith said earlier this week. “I can play within the pocket, but I’m athletic enough to run that style of offense [read-option].”

Chip Kelly has said repeatedly that he’s not looking for a running quarterback. He simply prefers a quarterback who can pose the threat of running. Based on his performance today, Smith would appear to fit that part of the equation.

Of course, there’s a lot more to it. The Eagles (and other teams) will continue to do their homework on this QB class, which does not feature the star power of previous years.

One quarterback who has run some of the read option in college is Florida State’s E.J. Manuel. He ran a 4.62 this morning.
