Well, that didn’t take long.
One day after being dismissed by the Eagles, Andy Reid is close to becoming head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, according to multiple reports.
Arizona’s vice president of media relations Mark Dalton says that the team has reached out to Reid but has not yet met with him, and that the club will interview Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy over the weekend.
While some believed that Reid would take a year off or explore a less demanding front office role, those close to the 54-year-old were expecting him to keep motoring.
“He’s a football coach. He wants to coach right now,” said Jeffrey Lurie on Monday. “He’s really energized and excited and someone is going to get one heck of a football coach.”
Reid’s coaching staff could come together pretty quickly. There is some talk that Reid could hold onto current Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton. Also, former assistants Pat Shurmur, Juan Castillo and Brad Childress are also possibilities.
Reid will be reunited at least temporarily with Kevin Kolb, who was traded from the Eagles prior to the 2011 season for a second-round pick and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Kolb is reportedly scheduled to make $9 million plus a $2 million roster bonus in 2013.
The Eagles are slated to host the Cardinals next season.
