Mornhinweg: Vick’s Pocket Presence Will Improve

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael VickMarty Mornhinweg spent about 20 minutes this morning talking about the Eagles’ offense, and specifically, the team’s quarterback situation.

Michael Vick was on the field for just six snaps Thursday night against the Steelers – five of them pass plays. He was sacked once and injured his thumb when he slammed it against Jason Kelce’s helmet.

The offense went three-and-out twice.

“That was one of the things that I was disappointed in was our precision,” Mornhinweg said. “You saw the plays that were called were precision-type plays, and although we didn’t have many opportunities, several times it wasn’t there.”

On the sack, it looked like Vick’s protection held up and he stepped right into pressure.

“He can get better there, and he has gotten better over the past couple of years there. He certainly can get better there,” Mornhinweg said. “I do believe that if it was a regular season game, and these are excuses even though everything we do is important and we make no excuses, that he would have done that a little bit differently.”

Mornhinweg seemed to be implying that Vick would have taken off and run.

Meanwhile, he said he likes what he’s seen out of Nick Foles so far.

“He did just about what I expected him to do, which was to play well,” Mornhinweg said. “I know that he has an opportunity to be a heck of a quarterback at some point.

“He’s quite a natural player and he’s a quick decision maker. You can see that his accuracy is good and his timing has been good up to this point. He has a lot of work left to do, like we all do.”

Foles will continue to get the second-team reps while Mike Kafka recovers from a fractured left hand.
