With premium Napa and Sonoma wine prices off the charts, it’s a rare treat to try truly noble California cabernet sauvignon for a cool 20 bucks. Geyser Peak may be best known for its modest wines, but its Block Collection single-estate wines are a cut above.
This one comes from the Alexander Valley, on the warm side of Sonoma nearest Napa, a region renowned for its deep, inky reds. Densely packed with dark fruit and cedar flavors, its firm tannic grip will best suit rich red-meat dishes or aged cheeses. If you’ve got the temperament to store it under 65 degrees, it will reward a few years of patience. But immediate gratification can be achieved by simply pouring it out of its bottle and then back in, to give it air before you set the table.Originally published in Philadelphia magazine, September 2007
