Tastes Like Tequila’s

1207927305There aren’t too many restaurants I get sentimental about, but Tequila’s had a hold on me for years. In April 2002, my husband took me there on our first date. For a while, we made it a springtime tradition to go back for an anniversary celebration. More recently, we agreed it wasn’t as good as it used to be, so we ended the yearly return trip.

But I think we’ve found a substitute sentimental favorite with Las Bugambilias on South Street. It’s the new home of Carlos Molina, who had cooked at Tequila’s for 15 years. Obviously, his time there had an effect on him. The heavy glass margarita goblets are similar, and so are the pretty ceramic plates. The interior is less fancy than Tequila’s, but definitely warm and comfortable. Prices are lower, too, but the food is just as good. Don’t miss the light-but-creamy roasted poblano soup or the flavorful and juicy chicken in tamarind sauce.
