Restaurant Wishes

1204315027I know we have a diverse and growing restaurant scene here in the Philadelphia area. Compared to other parts of the country, where choices are sometimes limited to the big chains, we have it made. But if I were visited by a wish-granting food genie, these would be my three restaurant wishes for Philly:

1. Upscale African. I rarely get jealous when a new restaurant opens in New York, but the buzz around Merkato 55, Marcus Samuelsson’s high-style culinary romp through the Africa, has me contemplating a dinner field trip to NYC.

2. Crudo. It’s the sashimi of Italy, and we do have it at Positano Coast, but can you imagine this town if there were just one place to eat sushi? We need more options in Italian raw fish preparations.

3. Greek. We have numerous casual Greek takeout places and Estia, of course, at the other end of the scale. Greek food seems to be sweeping through other major cities with restaurants at every price point, reflecting the many facets of the cuisine. I’m hoping that Kanella, when it opens next month at 10th and Spruce, will spark the trend here.
