TASTE DAILY: Pasty Alert

1215463710The Memphis Taproom, a new vegan-friendly gastropub in East Kensington, is hardly the place you’d expect to find beef pasties. (Servers ask, “Do you eat meat?” before describing the specials.) Pasties, a pocket-style comestible, originated in the lunch pails of English tin miners, who wanted self-contained sandwiches to keep the dirt out of their grub. East Kensington is a long way from Cornwall, and the locals chowing down on seitan barbecue and house-made veggie burgers are missing out on this unusual dish. Memphis Taproom’s modern pasties appetizer serves up two crunchy, greaseless pastries filled with moist shreds of beer-braised beef. It’s the perfect bar snack for pairing with one of the draft beers, like Ommegang Hennepin.
