The 8:30 Report: This Morning in Philly
The Reverend is in: One of the victims of the police beating received a prison visit from his mother and the Rev. Al Sharpton yesterday for Mother’s Day. The inmate, Dwayne Dyches, insists he is innocent of the shootings police say they were arresting him in connection with. Sharpton said he stopped by the prison as part of a “fact-finding mission.” [Inquirer]
Buckle up: The national Click It or Ticket campaign starts today, prompting Gov. Rendell to declare it Buckle Up Pennsylvania Day. The campaign to increase seat belt usage runs through June 1. Under state law, if you are stopped for a traffic violation and are caught belt-free, you can get slapped with an additional fine. [Inquirer]
Doing it for the kids: The state House Liquor Control Committee has approved a measure that would prohibit the use of child support payment cards (meant to help struggling parents provide for their children) to purchase alcohol. The bill would also expand the current regulations on using welfare benefit cards at state stores to include bars, restaurants and beer distributors. [KYW]
Birds of prey: The Penguins overtook the Flyers in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals last night. The team suffered a blow in the first period when defenseman Braydon Coburn — their best hope after Kimmo Timonen was sidelined for the remainder of the series — was badly injured by a puck shot to the face. When I first saw the story and accompanying film, it didn’t look good for the cops, but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until all the facts came out. Now that Al Thurmond is involved, it seems the police are completely vindicated. My only question now is when does Jesse Jackass show up?
