Typical White Person Becomes Online Fodder for Typical White People
Just as soon as you thought the latest Barack Obama controversy would die down a little bit, some enterprising young fellow with the ability to type decided it was worthy of its own Cafe Press gear. (You know: T-shirts, panties, coffee mugs, etc.)
Clearly, the only truly effective way to protest the re-racialization of American politics is the purchase of this “Typical White Person” tote bag. Its roomy interior can fit six months’ worth of irony.
Typical White Person [Cafe Press]
My grandmother’s a “typical white person” [The Mighty Dan Gross]
March 21st, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Is Obama saying his grandmother is a (stereo-)typical white person? Or is he saying that white people of a certain generation are inherently (”bred into”) racist? Or maybe he thinks only white people stereotype? Open mouth, insert foot. Open it again (to “clarify”) and insert other foot.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:29 pm
“Earlier in the week it appeared that Obama had a free pass to make slurs. There was no media outcry when Obama, wearing a green velvet suit at a Saint Patrick’s Day event, inserted an apostrophe in his name and declared “O’bama, not your typical Irish Mick”.”
For the complete story on Obama’s racist comments go to http://edddie.tumblr.com/post/29475735

I am so relieved that we have finally set the standard. It is now OK for me to point at a black hip-hop gangbanger and say, “That a typical black person”. Obama has certainly added his version of healing to the dialog. One man’s racism is just another’s innocent comment, huh?

I guess it’s okay to be best buddies with a murderer as long as I give an eloquent speech on criminal psychology.

Where’s the judgment on this?
Wright on day 1??!!
March 22nd, 2008 at 1:12 am
Is this what he means when he says he gives people “hope”? And who, pray tell is this uniting?
He gives a speech saying we need to work to get past racial division and then stereotypes those of one race.
This is a “different kind of politician”. Hmmmm . . .
March 22nd, 2008 at 1:22 am
Were is the Rev, Wright? Why haven’t people been demanding that he come forward to speak about this. I don’t care if he is retired. He needs to speak to the media and answer a few questions.
I would like to know how much he influences Obama from his own mouth.
Obama threw his Grandmother under the bus….reminds me of the Danny Devito movie…..but this time it’s “Throw Grandma Under the Train!

typical comment by a typical racist?
March 22nd, 2008 at 4:13 am
wright. rezko. the tenants in chicago. racist remarks. any one of these would have ended the candidacy of anyone of any other ethnic persuasion, white included. why is he still here? I do not want this many questions about a person running for president left unanswered and glossed over by the press for whatever reasons. we deserve better. I voted for carl mccall, I am in favor of david paterson’s governorship, and i am not a racist in the least, but for obama, i am willing to make an exception. where can i get the tote bag? lol
March 22nd, 2008 at 5:01 am
As a typical white person, I will vote for McCain if HIllary is not the nominee.
March 22nd, 2008 at 5:44 am
I find it ironic that Obama would refer to his grandmother as a “typical white person” after he had confessed to the same concerns in his book:
Then I guess Barack must be a “typical white person” too because he confessed to the same concerns in his book:
– Barack Obama from ‘Dreams of My Father’,
“When his grandmother wants a ride to work because the day before, while awaiting the bus, she was threatened by a black panhandler, he is outraged — at his grandparents. . . Later, when he moves to the South Side of Chicago in 1984, he eventually discovers that, like his grandmother, he’s sometimes scared of black males on the street, too.”
And the concerns are shared by others:
– The Reverend Jesse Jackson, as quoted in US News, 3/10/96,
“There is nothing more painful to me … than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery, then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved. ”
The point being, if Jesse, Barack and his grandmother all admit to stereotyping in this case, why didn’t Barack simply say “typical person”.
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:14 am
The more I hear “typical white person” and remember that it came out of the mouth of a bi-racial man trying to become POTUS, the angrier I get. And I’m not sure there’s much more to say than that.
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:19 am
I as a Typical white democrat will not only vote for John Mccain. I will contribute to his campaign and actually actively campaign for him in the November if Nobama is the Nominee. 20 years in a churh with this Pastor. This pastor got him hooked on this church. Wright married him and Michelle. His 2 children were baptised by this man. Michelle for the first time in her adult life is proud of her country. Obama is close personal friends (admittedly) to Bill Ayers, notorious american terrorist in the 60’s that bombed the Capitol building and the Pentagon and in 2001 just days after 911 said he was just upset they didn’t do more. Hmmm makes me want to vote for him. Doesn’t it you?
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:36 am
The irony is that Barack Obama’s upbringing has nothing in common with the “typical black person,” although he pretends to know the black experience. In fact, he has nothing really in common with me, a “typical white person” because I didn’t have the benefit of exclusive schools and the kinds of mentors this man has had to clear the way for him. Will the truth ever really come out about Obama? This is, I believe, just the tip of the iceberg. I call him the flim-flam man. He’s bamboozling his followers. If he’s the nominee, I’m out of the DNC. Color my “typical white” behind GONE.
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:59 am
The “typical” remark was horrid and offensive.
I agree, as a “typical white person” I have nothing in common with Obama and his rich lifestyle. Michelle Obama bemoans having to spend $10,000/year on dancing and piano lessons , summer camp, and other “extra”activities for their two daughters. Are you kidding me? The Obamas are clueless as to what life is really like for all of us out here struggling to stay afloat month-to-month. I have never NOT voted and always have supported a straight democratic ticket. If Obama is the nominee, I will not vote for him but instead stay home and deal with my “typical” life.

I as a white female, mother of 2, am truly offended by this disgusting generalization that all white people are racist. I teach my children everyday to love and respect everybody!!! How dare he catagorize myself and my beautifully big-hearted children. HOW DARE HE!!! I bust my butt everday just to make ends meet, and being a woman who drives a dump truck and has to deal with blatant sexism everyday, but still manages to hold my head up high and love the job I do, I am not even close to be “typical” to start with!!! Obama you have divided this country with your disgusting rhetoric and hate. IT’S TIME YOU STEP DOWN AND LET THIS COUNTRY HEAL…WE WERE DOING JUST FINE BEFORE YOU OPENED YOUR MOUTH
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:31 am
How funny is it that not too long ago Obama’s strategist were wondering if he was “black enough” to really garner all of the black votes. Well congrats Obama you did it. While I continue to “Hope” for a less divided country I will do it while I “Change” my vote. Hillary can count on me. As for separation of church and state- this was not a spiritual connection folks. Nothing was biblical about his church.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:46 am
The best thing that this great divider could do now is to exit stage left and then be sure to tell his extremist supporters that the Change and Hope he wants them to offer the democratic party is to vote for and support Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton who is still the BEST and ONLY CHOICE for our country and ALL THE TYPICAL people in it!!! GO HILLARY ALL THE WAY TO THE WHITE HOUSE FOR ALL of us who are typical make the difference!!!!
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:18 am
If white people say that about a black person, somehow everyone starts pointing fingers at them. Why do black people get a free pass? Why does Obama get a free pass to say anything about Hillary he wants to say but she cannot say a truth about him.
Barak and Michele have had more advantages and ability to attain education and wealth than many whites in this society. Blacks have had special advantages to be given education and jobs than some white citizens.
NOW should he be able to continue to say mean and untrue things about a decent white woman to advantage him in gaining the presidency? and she cannot say the basic facts about him without being chastized for that?
The media, some super delegates, wall street, and the traitor B. Richardson seem to be in his pocket. What they are not figuring on is the voters. Oh sure, the DNC-also in his pocket- can shut primary voters out by rigging caucuses and denying Mi and Florida voters, but then there is the general election…….where the voters will have their say.
Hillary supporters will NEVER vote enmass for Obama. Maybe a stray misguided soul might stay in the Democratic party, but most I believe will either plan a massive write in vote for Hillary or leave the Democratic party forever.
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 am
Obama is our Savior! Obama and Reverd Wright are RIGHT! God D*** america. Obama will apologize to our Muslim brothers for an arrogant america. Let us choose now to rally around Barak and Michelle and make them proud. No more so called “elections” which your “typical white person” votes for clinton. We know from Obama what these typical white people are - they are all racists!
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:46 am
Obama can’t be held accountable for Wright’s words but the American public can hold him accountable for displaying a terrible lack of judgment in his continued association and support of him. And America can hold Obama accountable for his own words.
His recent message on race resounds as a way to “guilt” America into voting for him. The message was clear, Senator Obama - be ashamed white America for what you have done to the African Americans. Feel guilty white America for what you have done to African Americans and vote for me. If you don’t, you are just stepping right back to the time when you enslaved us.
And honestly, America should be ashamed. But, let’s not be ashamed of just slavery. Let’s be ashamed of what we did to the Native Americans who potentially experienced the greatest “rape” of all, long before African Americans arrived here. Let’s be ashamed that for years women were oppressed, unable to vote, and were not believed or were told “you must have done something to lead him on” after they had been raped. Let’s be ashamed that 36.5 million people in the United States live in poverty. Let’s be ashamed that the United States refused to see the necessity of seriously exploring alternative fuel sources before we became dependent on foreign oil that costs more than $108.00 a barrel. As a country we have much to be ashamed of and it extends far beyond race relations.
Yes, we can “move beyond racial wounds,” but that will never happen as long as the hatred and racism spewed forth from the likes of Dr. Jeremiah Wright is supported by the American people. It cannot be dissipated or watered down through explanations of age-old anger, by minimizing it as “sound bites,” or by passing it off as something akin to an elderly relative farting in church that embarrasses you.
It need not matter whether the church congregation is predominantly black, predominantly white, predominantly Hispanic, or some other form of religion, there is no room for rhetoric of hate and racism in any church nor in society for that matter. And as long as there is we will never conquer the division of race in this country. We cannot conquer it with stupidity, hate, fear, and accusations. It can only be conquered by rising above the hate, anger, and fear on all sides, and stretching forth our hands in love towards one another with forgiveness in our hearts.
I wish I could believe in his speech of hope which was delivered so eloquently. Certainly no one can argue that he has an oratory gift. Unfortunately, it was a speech given much too late and for the wrong reasons. And what a crying shame that is for all of America.
March 22nd, 2008 at 1:46 pm
First off, I dare anyone to use that bag and not look like a reactionary idiot. It will go well with your militia uniform and Ditto head cap. LOL
“Can you imagine if Hillary Clinton said someone was a “typical black person?” ”
If Hillary’s mother were black, I bet I would say “She’s half-black so shut up”
I bet that’s what I would say. Just like I point out that Obama is half-white.
Newsflash: Obama’s mom and grandma are white. What does that mean? He is just as white as he is black.
Obama is HALF-WHITE!!!
End of story.

As an atypical black guy living atypically in Alaska with an atypical lifestyle, I will atypically vote for John McCain if that rookie Obama is the nominee.
March 22nd, 2008 at 5:08 pm
If Obama is the Democratic nominee, the Republican party will be happy to take any remaining inventory off your hands.
Most Americans are pretty pissed off to hear that supporting the US versus singing GD America makes them somehow “reactionar,” but that’s just one typical white person’s opinion …. TWPO:)
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:51 pm
As a multi-racial, veteran I can say that
Sen.Obama never fails to deliver a great
speech. He put the topic of “race” front and
center, though that was not the primary task. He sought to change the subject from
the hate-speech that he sat thru. The “damning of America”, why? Just days before on all the news outlets he said, he’d never heard them.
I’m most troubled by the 9/11 comments, what-
ever one’s historical context those days and
weeks post 9/11, victims and bodies were
being sought. How can he explain siting there
giving “silent endorsement” to the comments?
That was his opportunity to demonstrate
“judgement” and show leadership. It is not about race. Sen.Obama would have us think that to show we’re not racists we show vote
for him. There are 65k black churches and 23m
black americans, per Rev. Rivers on MSNBC,
on any Sunday morning, in most of those you
would not hear the type of sermon Rev.Wright
delivered. We need the strongest candidate
to take us in a new direction for the future.
You voters now will have the future in your
hands. Make up your own minds! Don’t let the
MSM call the race! We’re fighting to take our
country back! Sen.Clinton will go all out for
us. Let’s show her that we have her back.

What obama has done to the DEM party is just disgusting. And the fact that the DEM leaders are allowing this to happen is shameful.
This typical white person will have no problem voting for McCain if Clinton is not on the ticket.
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Well, THIS “TYPICAL WHITE PERSON” will now be voting for hillary….
this Obama is an IDIOT??? First he calls his grandmother a racist…then excuses his “anti-america”, “anti-white”, “anti-semtic” preacher as a lovable senile uncle…
WHAT A JOKE!!!! Even Mccain looks more sane that the OBAMA….
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:21 pm
In his arrogance, Obama has trashed white people, the hope for democrates to win the general election, and a viable “first” woman president. This kind of arrogance “typically” pisses me off and I choose to vote for anyone but the entitled jerk.
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:25 pm
He hailed his radical preacher as a hero. He trashed his grandma as a racist same as the typical white person.
Then he said he want to unite the country.
Obama has got to win the most BS speech of the year.
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 pm
Andrew Austin sums up nicely what this typical white person’s intuition was telling me from the moment I heard Obama speak:
“One of the hallmarks of the cult of personality is that people see something that’s not there. They swoon and cry over empty rhetoric. They mistake political ambition for profound discovery. They believe that something is wrong with the dissenters.”
The psychopathy of the cult leader holds that they do not recognize the individuality or rights of others, which makes all self-serving behaviors–such as bucking to shut out voters in two states–permissible. They are stiflers posing as liberators.
Well, time to get off the soapbox and go back to cowering in the presence of blacks on the mean streets of Vegas.

P.S. From this transplanted East Coaster who once lived in Osterhout, PA, to the good people of the Keystone State: SEND A DECISIVE MESSAGE ON APRIL 22! VOTE HILLARY!
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:10 am
I am glad that there is still time to fix this problem of delegates & popular vote.
Send out e-mails, volunteer, blog for Hillary.
We can’t let this guy in the White House. You need to write to the DNC. Send e-mails to Dr. Dean to seat the Delegates, re-vote or something.
So many people want their vote for obama back. We dont want the likes of Rev. *using title loosely* Wrong in the White House swearing in Obama and to his side would be Louis Farrakhan screaming at the blue eyed devils and bloodsuckers *his words not mine*. Ol’ Ayers might be there looking for someplace to plant his next bomb. While Rezco is jackin the china!!!
Help America Help. Go to hillaryclinton.com to volunteer, donate or something. You can also see what people think through hillaryspeaksforme.com
It is a web site where people send videos in support of Senator Clinton. She hears our voices and she has solutions and thats where I ran..towards experience, real change and solutions. See you there!!!

Typical white person by itself is bad enough. In the speech he said she was a racist and he can’t denounce her and the next day he is saying she was a typical white person with the usual stereotypes. One day he thinks she is a racist and throws her under the bus in front of millions of people and the next day says “oh well, she is like any other typical white person.”

This typical white person has spent a lifetime actively fighting for the rights of ALL people. Thank you very much Barack.
I WILL NOT be voting for you if, God forbid, you are the nominee.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:19 pm
It saddens me to think that Senator Obama is somehow the spokesperson for all people of color.
I have a question I would like people to think about:
What if Senator Clinton or Senator McCain referred to someone as a “typical black person”? Would that make them racist? If so is that not a double standard?
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Maybe Americans are finally seeing Obama for what he is. Sounds like he has been trying to cover up his own racist feelings, by pointing the finger at the Clintons. I hope it is not too late to defeat him. He has no experience, is friends with very cruel people in Africa, goes to a racist and anti-American church for 20 years, and worse than that seems to have no problem doing so. We are just beginning to know who he really is.
March 23rd, 2008 at 6:11 pm
I’m so glad to know I’m a typical smart white person whose not going to let Nobama get by with this. After all who is really being racist? I think he and the rest of his typical black friends are the racists.92% of the blacks voting for Nobama. Hmmmmmmm let me see that sounds racist to me. You want to here some stuff on Obama and Oprah by a reverend from harlem go to you to Atlah.org rev. david manning. He will give you typical white people a few lessons on B. Hussein Obama.
March 23rd, 2008 at 8:07 pm
“I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community.”
then it can still be concluded that one does not have a a mentor/spiritual advisor for over 20 yrs. without sharing the same views!…Obama`s refusal to ‘disown’ his Pastor strongly suggests that`s the case!
but perhaps the larger issue is that while Obama`s preaching togetherness, he goes to a church who`s Pastors preach racial, anti-American garbage…and who preach a separatist, ‘Black Only Value System’, which is extremely divisive…even Obama`s mentor, the Rev. Wright, stated that it`s a separate but = black theology!
and what`s this use of the word ‘disown’…doesn`t Obama know that`s RACIST…but against black people…
yes…we all have friends, etc., who say things we strongly disagree with…but there`s a HUGE difference…none of my friends, etc., have ever been my mentor/spiritual advisor for OVER 20 YRS!
just another TYPICAL politician!…
March 26th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
I, for one, am fed up with all the double talk…..all the double standards that have
been so prevelant in the Obama campaign.
It is not alright to be racist, period! This
man is not about change! Change is a convenient slogan for his ” just so typical ”
rhetoric!
I want to cast my vote on merit! I want to vote for someone who can represent all the peoples of this great nation. I want to vote for someone with experience and a history for working together with democrats, republicans, blacks, hispanics, white , men and women. No more double talk….no more double standards. I’m just voting for a plain ole ‘typical white ” woman from New York!
March 26th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
My Grandmothers are Typical White Persons too: 1) one is a descendant of the Typical White Persons who came to this country on the Mayflower, 2) the other is a Typical German Cherokee who ancestors walked the Trail of Tears.
March 26th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
My grandmothers are Typical White Persons too: they live in Poland. One of them has no conventional bathroom and still uses an outhouse at the age of seventy two–no health workers or nurses around as she lives alone. My other grandmother lives on a farm and raised all the food for the family all of her life.
March 26th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Isn’t it ironic that Howard Dean, who’s mission was to get the Democratic party taken over by grassroots and get rid of the “establishment”, has *become* the establishment by playing crappy, biased politics and is trying to shove this unvetted, racist, anti-American empty suit down our throats?
March 26th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Just one question…
Who has been bamboozling who, for their votes, brother?
As a not so typical irrelevant color person, I detest what Barack has done to the country.
He is a deeply flawed candidate and must step down… but he does not see the need for it.
So, dear PA, ALL of you.. be sure to get all your friends and family to THINK LONG and HARD on whether we want such a devious person in the office.
A heart-healthy change is indeed available.. and that is Hillary. If they dont know her well, ask them to visit www.thehillaryiknow.com - it was quite an experience for me to get to know Hillary from the viewpoint of 40 people who know her and her work very well. It’s about time we gave this true public servant (yes, she is) a fair chance and that is all it is going to take to get her into the office.. AND PROVE IT TO THIS SHAM WHAT A NOT-SO-TYPICAL FEMALE CAN DO TO OUST SUCH NASTINESS FROM THE PUBLIC ARENA FOREVER!! Thank you.
March 26th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
While we’re on the subject…I’m sick of hearing that I need to be ashamed of raping Indians a bizillion years ago. I never raped a Native American, oppressed a woman, denied a woman the right to vote, or raped a woman. In fact, since I AM A WOMAN, I’ve also never been raped or oppressed by any man.
I thank God I live in this country every day. And when I look into the typical white faces of my sons, brothers, father, husband…I am proud. Proud of our men and how hard they have worked to build their women up. We are equal. No burkas or squatting in rice patties here. We are doctors, lawyers, engineers, mothers, teachers, dancers, laughers, lovers and loved.
