Sifting Through the Metro Body Count

Metro
Last Friday’s Metro layoffs may have surprised some staffers, but they also seemed inevitable after cuts made at sister New York and Boston papers last week. The Philadelphia version of the daily ended up losing veteran copy editor Jody McClain and quick-witted writer Mike Benner, who covered politics and elections.

The cuts may not seem significant, but when you have an editorial staff of 11, every body lost is big blow. G.W. Miller, who did a nice job showcasing the Metro’s progress last week, penned a follow-up eulogy:

One Metro staffer now describes the Metro office as a gulag. Another staffer emailed a simple summation of the Metro’s situation: “Fucking corporation.”

Miller hints that some of the cuts at the three papers may signal the desire of Metro’s European corporate overlords to sell them. The rumored group of Philadelphia investors swooping in to buy out the paper has yet to surface.
