Sheldon Brown’s Baffling Contrarianism Continues
As pointed out today on The 700 Level, Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown once again threw a potentially volatile quote out into the mainstream, this time while discussing a week-old blog post in which Donovan McNabb he requested “more playmakers” on both sides of the ball in 2008.
Brown, appearing Sunday night on NBC 10’s Sports Final with woolly-bearded Howard Eskin and John Clark, responded to McNabb’s opinion with the usual amount of blunt honesty/utter contempt. In addition to Brown’s assessment that McNabb “threw teammates under the bus” with his comment, he also not-so-subtly poked a stick at McNabb and the overall offense throughout the interview.
As we pointed out a couple weeks ago, Sheldon Brown’s been the king of the questionable sound bite this year. This latest would seem to add more evidence that Brown’s not going to be accused of being a company man any time soon. Speaking to the Daily Examiner, Clark downplayed the incident, saying that he sees Brown’s recent outspokenness as a sort of an evolution of his leadership role. He even went as far as to put the fifth-year cornerback second on the locker-room totem pole, behind Brian Dawkins.
One full-time Eagles writer sees all of Brown’s comments as part of a pattern, originating from the player’s overall dissatisfaction with team management: “Sheldon, like most Eagles veterans, hates Joe Banner for the way the Eagles do business,” the scribe says. “He also felt really, deeply dissed when Jim Johnson touted Will James as a competitor for Sheldon’s job last off-season. Those feelings have affected his overall outlook on the team.”
So, what to make of Brown at this point? Is he in jeopardy of poisoning anything with the Eagles? Or is he just giving people an unfiltered version of a fractured team dynamic?
