Job Posting: Crime Reporter for Daily News

Doughnut OlleyDaily News reporter Christine Olley writes about crime for a living, but now she may have to move very, very far away to find a cop willing to talk to her.

At a press conference last week on the shooting of officer Charles Cassidy inside a Dunkin’ Donuts, an off-camera Olley, probably fishing for a headline like “Fat Cop Gets Shot Buying Donuts,” asked Commissioner Johnson, “So he wasn’t just going there just to get coffee? He was actually checking on that Dunkin’ Donuts?” Johnson was dumbfounded at the insensitive question, and an awkward silence fell over the room before the commish unleashed a verbal scolding.

The next morning, on the local cop website/message board Domelights.com, user “ArmyFirefighter” posted, “Does anyone know just who the EVIL BITCH was that posed that senseless, dumbass question to the PC? I’d like to know who she was so that I can contact her employer and demand blood through a letter to the editor.” Members labeled her a “worthless skank” and “complete azzwipe,” while another suggested a punishment of “impalement through you know where.” Persons of interest included the Inquirer’s Melissa Dribben and some “Hispanic female” from Fox 29 until “COMICBOOKGUY” declared that the reporter in question was Olley and that brass was calling for her termination.

Earlier today, Olley attempted damage control by posting her own message on the site: “… I realize unequivocally that the tone that I used and the way that I phrased my question was offensive, rude, and wrong.” Some members accepted her apology, but others did not. “Kate” wrote, “I heard nothing but smugness and disrespect in your voice, and it sickens me. I find your apology weak and insincere.” “Am One” wrote, “Don’t bother! And please do not insult our intelligence here. Your post is a sorry and insincere little attempt of damage control. … Shame on you.”

Reached at her desk at 400 North Broad Street, Olley said, “Oh God. This whole thing has turned into a big mess. I can’t talk to you about it.” — Victor Fiorillo

What an insensitive thing to say to the leader of a police force that is unappreciated to begin with, and is greiving a dead loved one!’
    What a horrible reporter!

  2. GradGirl Says:

Don’t you bloggers have anything better to do than hype up false accusations?
Wow Domelights is such a great source. Those cops on there are just the best of the best.

You should know better Vic, you are a big time fact checker for Christ sake. None of those cops were there at the press conference to hear what the DN chick asked. Blogs part of legitimate news sources shouldn’t print secondhand information.
    What is this Philly Weekly?

Plus, since when does Sly’s reaction to a comment insinuate a witch hunt?
    Is he the new Giulinai?

The reporter obviously was trying to see whether the cop was in the shop, minding his own business to buy a snack .VS. investigating a crime while on-duty.
Of course it is heartbreaking that this officer lost his life.
Yet imagine if he just walked into a death trap because he wanted nothing more than a morning snack? That would make this story even more of a tearjerker than it already is.

  3. ArmyFirefighter Says:

GradGirl, will you please do the world a favor and pull your head out of your ass? This is not a “false accusation.” Let’s PUT ASIDE THE FACT THAT THE REPORTER HERSELF has issued (albeit a lame, weak) an apology, and center on the fact that this has been confirmed through several sources, who have reviewed the footage of the press conference several times.

Perhaps you are the accused, making a lame, weak attempt at damage control?

  4. Victor Fiorillo Says:

Grad Girl, just for the record, a recording of the press conference was available online. I know that some Domelights users heard the recording, and so did I. In any case, the reporter herself admitted that her tone and phrasing were “offensive, rude, and wrong.”

  5. JL Says:

I think this whole thing is ridiculous. Clearly the reporter’s question was taken out of context and she has apologized for any harm she has caused. The postings against her are vicious and uncalled for and it’s sad people on domelights.com have nothing better to do than go after a reporter in such a nasty way rather than focus on the real issue here…the out of control violence in the city. Get with it already and stop wasting your time on gossip and trash.

  6. LtAnger Says:

Ahhh… So we have a reporter asking a patently offensive question about a murdered police officer and we’re supposed to feel sorry for her because cops on Domelights and other sites are ripping her a new a-hole? Three cheers for for Domelights and the bloggers who are putting her in her place.

  7. The Blue Avenger Says:

JL–You need a dose of reality. Violence in the city exists, despite our best efforts. The problem lies at the feet of our judges, who seem to enjoy handing out probation.

As for Christine Olley, I have nothing to say to her and i would not micturate upon her if she was engulfed in flames.

  8. JL Says:

wow, micturate, that’s a really big word to say something really nasty, to a woman no less. stop wasting your time

  9. GradGirl Says:

It was an honest question taken the wrong way, by Sly at first, and now YOU ALL.
    Let’s move on.
    Shall we??

P.S. You Domelights cops, why the hell are you guys all so nasty?
Is living in the Northeast and/or Bridesburg really that bad?
    Wait. I know.
It is stuck living as a blue-collar Philadelphian.
I guess I would be pretty pissed off too.

  10. ArmyFirefighter Says:

GradGirl, they are all so nasty because they are blue-collar guys that are sick and tired of protecting the likes of you- UNGREATFUL White-Collar Liberal Scumbags with Cranial-Rectal Inversions!

  11. EvlLeprechaun Says:

    Blue Collared…living in the NorthEast/Bridesburg…hmmmm…
Gradgirl the question was taken out of context the moment it left Olley’s brain and exited her mouth. Have you been to a crime scene seeing the steam rise up from the puddle of blood of a teen-ager that will never know the days that could have come for the rest of his life? The pain and anquish when his mother shows up on the location and the screams of wanting Jesus, God, Allah, Buddah, or which ever the diety du jour may be? Have you ever held a life in the palm of your hand greeting a child into the world when she takes her first breath? Have you ever held the hand of an innocent as he/she exhales her last? Have you ever seen those scenes played over and over in your dreams — or have to testify to any of the aformentioned to bosses, judge and juries, and to your own God. Until you have..Pog Mohoine.

  12. adam Says:

It is sad you are cops are picking on this apologetic reporter. She didn’t mean her question to be offensive or rude at all and has repeatedly apologized for it. What’s worse, people that are supposed to protect our city are now making comments about citizens who disagree with them. Does that even seem sensible? It is horrible we lost ANOTHER police officer, but worst yet, we are losing our sense of safety because these officers are not forgiving a citizen for a misunderstood question.

  13. lois lane Says:

Christine stop whining. It’s called accountability. Apparently it’s foreign to your profession. You are experiencing only a tiny fraction of the scrutiny that police officers like Chuck Cassidy face everday.
