Wegmans Drunk Empowerment Campaign
In early 2007, Wegmans joined with a few other grocery chains to put pressure on the Pennsylvania legislature to back off a more stringent liquor law bill and let them serve fruity beer, damn it. The yuppie-friendly supergrocer has taken it a step further by encouraging some of its passionate consumers of expensive cheese and exotic crackers to start writing their state senators.
In fact, they’ve already written the letter for you. Just type in your mailing information here, and it’ll take you to a page where you’ll be able to choose between three letters. Here’s one:
There is legislation pending that will limit my choices as a consumer. I ask that you please oppose it.
I shop at Wegmans and want to be able to buy beer in their Market CafĂ© restaurant, and wine or beer by the glass as a complement to a meal, a convenience enjoyed by consumers in many other states. Wegmans already offers incredible choice and convenience. This additional convenience would save me time and allow me to select from a wide variety of specialty beers. Please do not support legislation that will prevent this from happening. I urge you to do what’s right for consumers.
It also gives readers a chance to sign off with a personalized pleasantry, either “Sincerely,” “Best regards” or “Respectfully.”
Wegmans rep Jo Natale won’t give the exact numbers of Wegmanites who’ve followed through, but she does say, “The response was excellent. It confirmed for us that this is something that our customers clearly want.”
But it’s also clear that Wegmans wants it more.

Thanks for the link!
I can’t wait for Pennsylvania to get out of the dark ages! Welcome to the 21st Century; beer distributors’ MONOPOLY be damned!
