Sam Carchidi Vexes Phillies With Whining

samcarchidi.jpgInquirer reporter Sam Carchidi (pictured) is demanding an apology. So is Phillies reliever Brett Myers. But as of right now, neither side is budging after a Saturday-night locker-room dustup that resulted in both men being restrained and Carchidi being escorted out.

Fox 29 ran an interview yesterday with both Myers and Carchidi, in which both claimed that the other one started the argument. The hilarious verbal sparring arose after Myers gave up two home runs in the ninth inning, which cost the Phils the game. After the reporter asked Myers some testy questions about the loss, Myers called him a “retard”; Carchidi responded by asking Myers if he knew how to spell “retard.” Pointing, shoving and restraining ensued. Phillies PR man Larry Shenk worked overtime this weekend to clean up the mess.

“Brett is always available for the media win or lose,” Shenk tells the Examiner. “This incident is certainly not typical of his dealings with the media.” Shenk adds that Carchidi may have been a little “unprofessional” in his approach, saying that he “interrupted an interview with a large media group.” Shenk says Myers apologized for using the word “retard,” and that he considers it a closed issue.

Asked if he’s has ever had problems with Carchidi before, Shenk says: “Sure. I’ve yelled at him. [Former Phillies GM] Ed Wade’s yelled at him too. One of the problems with Sam is that he comes in here on a Saturday night asking questions about stuff that happened last week. The players have already answered those questions and get annoyed with that.”
