In Pa., Hillary’s the Dem to Beat — For Now
According to the latest in-state polls from Quinnipiac University, Pennsylvanians are heating up over Sen. Hillary Clinton. Clinton took a commanding lead over the fading Barack Obama when 524 state Democrats were polled August 14th through 20th.
Hillary took 42 percent of the vote over Obama’s 12 percent (margin o’ error: 2.9 percent). Unfortunately for Obama, he can’t even claim second place, as former vice president and enviro-ranger Al Gore polled 13 percent.
But one Pa. Democratic insider cautions against thinking that Clinton’s lead is insurmountable. “This is a classic case of the front-runner effect,” our source says. “The more telling number is the fact that 25 percent of this state has yet to hear enough about Obama to vote on him favorably or unfavorably — and the fact that they’re rating Gore, who’s not even running, higher than Obama.”
Pennsylvania Republicans love former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, who garnered 31 percent of the vote; his closest competition, Sen. John McCain, tallied 13 percent.
