Is the Inquirer Finished with Stephen A.?

stephenayoungbuckjpgAccording to Phawker’s unnamed sources inside both the Daily News and the Inquirer, Stephen A. Smith is losing his columnist megaphone at the paper and will be relegated to the position of a lowly general assignment reporter. Smith — reportedly the highest paid staffer on either paper, with a $100K+ salary — will, according to our own wizened source within the paper, not take this very well.

Our source claims that, not surprisingly, Smith’s enormous cost (much like the Inquirer building) is something Tierney and company are trying to eliminate. However, rather than fire him, they’ll just move him into an uncomfortable position, forcing him to quit. “I won’t be surprised that, if he takes the demotion,” the source says, “they’ll have him cover the British Open and other events he won’t be able to because of his ESPN commitments.”

Regardless, this will be an issue that many feel won’t be handled quietly. Actually, with Smith, that’s almost a guarantee.
