Stu Bykofsky’s 9/11 Tinderbox Not Going to Jeopardize His Job

bykofskycom_976913252.jpgNot surprisingly, yesterday’s Stu Bykofsky column arguing that we need another 9/11 to bring us together, has pretty much touched every hot rail imaginable and become the subject of furious opinion, both locally and nationally. Although the column is possibly misguided, and incredibly curmudgeonly, it does have a point beyond the sensationalistic, jingoistic subject matter.

Obviously, this has been grounds for a virtual ass-kicking for Bykofsky (and Daily News editors) online from, oh, pretty much every political blog on the planet. But will this be the end of Byko’s dusty byline?

DN City editor Gar Joseph says absolutely not. Even though he edited the piece (Bykofsky’s main editor, Wendy Warren, is on vacation, missing out on the fun this week), Joseph said that there hasn’t been any reaction from management suggesting that his, or Bykofsky’s jobs, were in jeopardy. Joseph even said that he doubts there will be any reprimanding because of it.

“Stu’s NOT getting fired,” Joseph reiterated.

But what about when Warren comes back?

“Right,” Joseph said. “It’s possible that I’m on my way out and I don’t even know it …”

Here are some snippets of the clench-fisted anger being summoned:

* What kind of editor puts this dreck into print? Reading this, his reasoning is that it will bring us all together politically. When did disagreeing about politics become such a bad thing?(Digg)

* I think this guy should be tarred & feathered.
Insanity knows no boundaries. There should be a change in the constitution regarding this type of comment … oh wait, what constitution?
(Crooks and Liars)

* This is indolent, second-rate writing, and more importantly, it’s impossible to take seriously. We should have “righteous rage,” but he doesn’t say how we should channel that anger into something productive. We should “quell the chattering of chipmunks,” because Bykofsky apparently prefers not to listen to political debate.(The Carpetbagger)

    Uniting the United States…for what?

I can understand the opinion that the United States is divided and that an attack on American soil would Unite the country. I do not understand what you hope to accomplish by this attack. Are you suggesting that we need to support more military action in the middle east? Are you suggesting that a United America supports attacks on civilians in other countries? Are you suggesting that a United America has a better chance of hunting down Al Qaeda? Just so you know, Al Qaeda does not exist. ANyone can be a member of Al Qaeda. Its not an official oganization or group. Anyways, if you are suggesting that Americans need to ‘unite’ against Al Qaeda so that war planes can kill more innocent people you are mistaken.
