Mike Nutter: Hero of the Gay
Philly.com’s Next Mayor blog trots out stats from a recent Equality Forum poll suggesting that 70 percent of the voters in gay neighborhoods went for Michael Nutter in May’s primary.
The EF says that even though many other candidates did their own lobbying with gay interest groups, it was Nutter’s legislative approach that most appealed to them. EF’s executive director Malcolm Lazin says: “Nutter was viewed as a progressive outsider by a community that is perceived as outside the mainstream. Nutter actively campaigned for the gay vote and sent cues that he embraced diversity and wanted to shake up the establishment for Philadelphia’s benefit.”
