WATCH: Cory Booker Argue for Same-Sex Marriage on Senate Floor

Just two weeks from the day the Supreme Court will hear arguments about making marriage equality legal nationwide, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker has taken to the floor of the U.S. Senate to argue the importance of same-sex marriage to his colleagues.

“We cannot fail now. Love is on the line. Citizenship is on the line,” Booker said on the Senate floor. “We cannot deny the worth of one American without denying the worth dignity and strength of our nation as a whole.”

According to CBS3, Booker framed his narrative around Jim Obergefell, an Ohio resident and lead plaintiff in the Supreme Court same-sex marriage case Obergefell vs. Hodges. When Obergefell’s husband, John, passed away three months after they were married in a marriage equality state, he had to endure a legal battle about whether or not Ohio, a non-marriage state, would recognize their marriage on John’s death certificate. A federal judge ruled that their marriage should be recognized in Ohio, but it was successfully appealed and John was listed as “single.”

“[Obergefell] appealing to the highest court in the land to have their citizenship rights recognized … their love recognized,” Booker said. “Their story is heartbreaking. It is inspiring. But unfortunately, in our nation it is all too common.”
