Cinco de Mayo Happenings

Happy Cinco de Mayo. The day where it seems every bar makes some tenuous connection with being Mexican. Even if they’re normally Japanese or Irish. But we’re focusing on the bars and restaurants that are Mexican all year round, not just on the 5th of May.

Cafe Ynez – The recently opened Washington Avenue BYOB will be serving kiwi strawberry margarita mixes for $8.50 a carafe all day. Just bring your own booze.

Cantina Los Caballitos and Cantina Dos Segundos – The Northern Liberties Mexican bar is celebrating with the return of their popular watermelon margaritas. The kitchen will also be turning out summertime specials like crab guacamole and Mexican hot dogs. Mexican beers will also be discounted.

Distrito – Jose Garces’s Mexican restaurant in University City is celebrating the big day with a menu of Mexico City street food. The menu includes two carnitas tacos for $6, three steak alambres for $7 and guacamole and chips for just $5.

Jose Pistola’s – Business as usual but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth going. Monday means Joe Gunn’s Bueno Braino quiz show.

La Calaca Feliz – Fairmount’s Mexican hot spot is getting into the spirit with a special $24 prix fixe menu and two happy hours. From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight there will be $5.50 margaritas and $2 off all other cocktails.

Lolita – Just reopened and reimagined, the now serving alcohol spot on 13th will be open for lunch and dinner today. Check out the menu.

Sancho Pistola’s – Consider Sancho Pistola’s if you’re looking for ceviche, mezcal cocktails or this special option of the day. The Crabbie Sancho, a pear margarita with Crabbie’s Original ginger beer served in a glass rimmed with cinnamon and chili pepper. Buck a shuck oysters all day.

Taqueria Feliz – Manayunk’s happy spot is opening at 11:30 a.m. today and will have food and drink specials all day.

Verdad – The Bryn Mawr restaurant is offering $5 pinchos tonight. This includes Achiote Rubbed Red Snapper with Zucchini, Carne Asada and Iberico Lomo, Roncal Cheese, and Pineapple Skewers.
