At the risk of starting your day off with a sad trombone, there’s this: The results of a new Gallup poll, which found that only half of Pennsylvania residents exercise regularly. And in New Jersey, the outlook is slightly more gloomy: Less than 48 percent there get their sweat on with any regularity.

The results were part of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, which, as we already noted, also found that PA is the 18th fattest state in the Union, with a 27.1 percent adult obesity rate. For the exercise metric, Gallup conducted phone interviews with 177,072 U.S. adults, asking if, over the previous week, they had exercised three or more days for at least 30 minutes a pop. Only 50.4 percent of Pennsylvanians and 47.7 percent of New Jerseyans said they had; the national average was 51.6 percent.

The state with the most frequent exercisers was Vermont, where 65.3 percent of residents said they exercised frequently. Rounding out the top five were Hawaii, Montana, Alaska and Colorado. Delaware came in dead last, with only 46.5 percent of residents saying they exercise frequently.

The full results are here.
