WATCH: Kate Gosselin, 2 Daughters Give Awkward TV Show Interview

The Today show interview devolves into long periods of silence.

Kate Gosselin is going on a media blitz this week. She’s on the cover of People, sporting a new, superior haircut and her twin 13-year-old daughters. “People think we’re supposed to be messed up, like, ‘Oooooh, the poor Gosselin kids, they’re going to be scarred for life, waaaaah,'” Mady Gosselin tells People. “Here’s the big news: We’re not messed up.”

Part 2 of the push: An interview with Savannah Guthrie on the Today show this morning. Cara and Mady — who were joined by sextuplets in 2004 and starred in the TLC show Jon and Kate Plus 8 — joined Kate for the interview. It was marked by long periods of silence and Kate Gosselin not convincing anyone of her points.

This exchange typifies the interview:

“I don’t want to speak for them but, Mady, go ahead. Sort of the things that you said in the magazine, that years later they’re good, they’re fine. Go for it, it’s your chance.”

“No,” Mady replied, smiling. “You just said it.”

Mady really only spoke up once, saying what people think is “not the full story.” She continued: “A lot of people think that filming our show has damaged us, but it’s only really helped.” Kate insisted the girls were more talkative earlier, which makes sense: Television — especially live TV — is almost always terrifying. It could make the most bubbly teen shy and inward.

The two girls did say they’d like to be on television again. As for Jon Gosselin, as Philadelphia magazine’s Simon van Zuylen-Wood reported in January’s issue, he’s living in a cabin in the woods in Pennsylvania.
