Here’s How to Say Something When You See Something

Where to call when observing "suspicious activity" on SEPTA.

Newsworks reports that Philadelphia mass transit riders can now call #1776 from mobile phones if “to report suspicious activity on the transit system.”

The “Look Up, Speak Up” campaign is designed to make sure riders are the eyes and ears of police, said Mayor Michael Nutter.

“The regional security awareness campaign, known as ‘Look Up, Speak Up,’ will encourage transit riders to alert authorities if they observe suspicious behavior or packages or something that just kind of looks out of the ordinary,” Nutter said.

Passengers on the PATCO high speed lines in New Jersey also will be able to use the security system.
This would seem to be an improvement over SEPTA’s previous “See Something? We Don’t Give a Damn” campaign that Daily News columnist Helen Ubiñas uncovered about a year ago. Our only worry? That the #1776 mnemonic might be a bit too clever for SEPTA riders to  remember.
