Maybe this is just a natural extension of “remix culture”—instead of sampling old bands and hit songs, today’s young people are taking old places that don’t serve us anymore and recontextualizing them for modern use. There are no frontiers for Philadelphians to wander, few places to get lost in the woods. So we’ve made our own woods, our own old and empty spaces, and allow them to serve as the place where our minds get lost or we discover something new about ourselves.
Either that, or spooky old buildings look cool.
