The Dirt: What To Get At The Farmer’s Market This Weekend

Feel that chill in the air, Philadelphia? Time to make like a squirrel and eat something summery before you miss your chance. Wherever your local farmer’s market is, make a point to stop by this weekend and pick-up the best of the shoulder season between Summer and Autumn.

On the way out…

Tomatoes: Tim Mountz of Happy Cat Farm reported this morning that it was 50 degrees on his farm, which means that we’re officially on a tomato time clock. You don’t have to go to a restaurant to eat heirloom tomatoes with burrata, basil, salt, and olive oil, and either way you’ll regret it if you miss your chance.

Stone Fruit: Peaches, plums, and nectarines. Go bake a pie. Make white sangria. Eat them fresh. Now’s the time.

Right now!

Figs: The season for fresh figs in Philly is about a minute long. Get some, then go to Di Bruno Brothers and ask the nice people behind the counter to slice you some prosciutto or spallacia. Find a bench. Enjoy your lunch.

Grapes: Whether purple concords, green niagras or a hybrid variety, don’t miss them. So what if they have seeds! They’ve got sweet and tart flavor to beat the pants off of any grocery store seedless.

Arriving

Winter Squash & Sweet Potatoes: You’ll have plenty of months to hunker down with these cold-weather favorites, but go for it if you’re ready for a reunion.
