Northbrook Marketplace
This $14.95 brunch buffet may be a little smaller than some, but it’s totally fresh, stocked with house-made goodies like tarts and cakes and the market’s specialties: pulled pork sliders and smoked salmon. Casual long tables make the meal feel like an indoor picnic. Don’t forget to BYOB. Azie on Main
Thanks to predecessor Maia, the upstairs level of this Main Line restaurant is spacious, well-appointed and bright, with deep booths, lots of tables, and a circular dining room in the back that’s perfect for large groups. Brunch here means an affordable buffet (only $20 per person) of Asian-leaning dishes like house-glazed tender beef, a nice selection of dim sum, ginger-cured salmon, excellent fried rice, and poached egg with green tea soba noodles. Shorty’s Sunflower Café
We love the easy charm of Shorty’s, with its eclectic for-sale art collection, high-school-kid waitresses, and petite outdoor deck — uh, make that corner of the parking lot. Though the open kitchen verges on chaos, what comes out of it — vast and fluffy blueberry pancakes, slabs of French toast, luscious omelets — positively rocks. Forgo plain toast for the 75-cent-extra homemade biscuit, cornbread or zucchini bread. Cash only. Du Jour
You want a scene? How about Reese Witherspoon, who liked brunching here so much that she brought beau Jake Gyllenhaal back on trip number two? No word on their orders, but we suggest the basil-spiked ciabatta scramble, and, now that sunbathing season has ended, the grilled chicken, bacon, avocado and blue cheese chopped salad. Nudy’s
Eighteen different omelets. Ten types of pancakes. Seven varieties of French toast. Creamed chipped beef. And best of all? No judgment-passing looks when you decide to get that Western omelet with a side of chocolate chip pancakes. (Just the short stack, of course.) Brunching hours: Vary. Zake’s
Zake’s is part cafe and part bakery, and at no other time do those parts work together so seamlessly as at brunch, when pancakes aren’t pancakes — they’re dessert-like indulgences sprinkled with candied lemon and laced with warm caramel sauce. Sandwiches, served with sides of homemade potato salad, are dinner-worthy meals. And dessert … well, every brunch ends with a trip to the always-stocked cake case. Spring Mill Café
The mismatched country dishes, the porch that overlooks the winding road (your dog is welcome to sleep under your table), the selection of cheeses for that day’s plate de fromage, the fragrant bowl of moules marinieres, the French toast à la Chef Pierre, the soft-spoken waitresses … need we say more? Meridith’s
This pretty Berwyn refuge is all about dark wood and exposed brick (except for the cute patio, fenced in from the sidewalk), and though the whole vibe is decidedly upscale, laid-back servers aren’t above a joke or two. Egg dishes are fine here, but you’ll be happier ordering the fabulous cinnamon bun French toast.
