GETTING OUTTA HERE: Autumn Getaways

Travel editor Christy Speer has fall’s color-changing leaves on her mind

Cheesy as it may be, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York — live! In person!  is something of a dream of mine. (I’m a sucker for holiday hoopla.) Needless to say, I find a deal like the one the Roosevelt Hotel is offering for the holiday weekend exciting: $269 per night from November 22nd to the 27th. The famed Roosevelt — right around the corner from the parade route at 45th and Madison Avenue (and the holiday display windows at Saks!) — is one of those old, gorgeous New York hotels with plush rooms, panoramic city views, and super-close proximity to Fifth Avenue shopping. The reason for the season — that is to say, Thanksgiving dinner — isn’t included in the deal (though a breakfast for two is), but will be served at the hotel’s restaurant.

If you’re less the traditional type, you might instead choose to take advantage of an equally fabulous deal from Concorde Hotels for your holidays. (Thanksgiving in Cannes! Christmas in Prague!) Starting in November and going until March, you can book a room in any Concorde property — be it Hotel Lutetia in Paris, or the lakeside Hotel de la Paix in Geneva — for a mere $118 a night. That includes a buffet breakfast and a surprise gift for each stay (ranging from a cruise on the Seine to various museum tours). All of which would certainly help put one in a celebratory mood, no?
