Critic’s Notebook: Magic Mushrooms

Last-minute holiday shopping needs? Well, if you have foodies on your list, check out Ingredient Specialty Foods in Manayunk. The shelves are stocked with dozens of culinary goodies like oils, vinegars, spices and gourmet chocolate. My pick? Vosges organic Enchanted Mushroom chocolate bar. I recently received one as a gift and, though I was skeptical of the mushroom/chocolate pairing, the two work together perfectly in this confection. The mushrooms — powdered reishis — add a subtle earthiness, nice texture and health-boosting antioxidants.
