A ventless fireplace brings a glow to the chimney-less home

Let the ski lodges have their imposing stone fireplaces — we’ll take our winter warm-up sleekly modern. And thanks to the Blomus fireplace, we don’t even need a chimney. When graphic designer Debra Stack moved into a new condo near 15th and Spruce, she was faced with a handsome marble hearth but no working chimney.

Her savvy solution? A ventless, stainless-steel fireplace from Matthew Izzo. Blomus’ Chimo runs on clean-burning ethanol and a match, emanating warmth and firelight for up to about four hours — long after Debra’s last sip of hot cocoa.

Two paintings (not shown) by local artist Elyce Abrams hang above the Blomus fireplace ($1,249 at Matthew Izzo, 1109 Walnut Street, 215-829-0606, matthewizzo.com). Stack bought them at Bridgette Mayer Gallery, 709 Walnut Street, 215-413-8893, mayerartconsultants.com. She picked up the trio of vases on her mantel while visiting Mata Ortiz, a small town in northern Chihuahua, Mexico. The Prince Aha stool by Philippe Starck is from Design Within Reach.
