Eagles Waive Vandervelde, Trim Roster To 75

The Eagles have waived center/guard Julian Vandervelde with an injury settlement, the team announced.

The roster is now down to 75 players. NFL teams have to cut down to 53 by 4 p.m. Saturday.

Vandervelde, originally a fifth-round pick in 2011, had back surgery earlier this summer. The 26-year old was the Eagles' backup center in 2013. As friend of the blog Sam Lynch points out, this move makes Vandervelde eligible to re-sign with the Eagles if and when he gets healthy in the coming weeks.

As for Jason Kelce's backup, the Eagles will count on David Molk. The 2012 seventh-round pick spent his rookie season on the Chargers' active roster, but was eventually let go and was out of football last season. He has held up well in the preseason.

NE sent Mankins and his $20mil to TB for Tim Wright and a 4th rd pick. Given the compensation, think TB is hurting that badly for quality linemen. NE gets Gronksurance.

    • cliff h-MOAR white goons

NE is not scared to jettison vets and eat some dead money, are they. ever look at their dead money list? it’s crazy, over 60 guys last year and close to 30 already this yr. if your name isnt Brady, rent

      • NickS, Combine Warrior

Was just looking at his contract and, unless I misread, there’s no dead money involved in trading him… But yeah, if you aren’t Brady, (or Gronk, really), you’re job is not safe.

        • https://twitter.com/richcolton RichC, brings duck to cockfigh

what’s your read on how Gronk will do this year?

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

I can only make a prediction based on good health. Assuming that, I think he’ll get rolling by week 3 or 4. Prob finish with close to 1k yards and double digit TDs.

          • https://twitter.com/richcolton RichC, brings duck to cockfigh

where would you take him in fantasy?

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

Wouldn’t go earlier than 3rd. I’d lock up that Tim Wright later for insurance. Kid had 54rec and 5TDs last year as a rookie. He was going to get buried as he wasn’t adapting under Lovie, plus they picked up Sefarian-Jenkins.

          • https://twitter.com/richcolton RichC, brings duck to cockfigh

I only ask because I keep finding myself in a Gronklema. 3rd pick in a 12 team standard roster. Trying to go RB/WR/WR. In all the mock drafts I’ve done, the 2nd WR I want is always gone. But Gronk’s there. Staring at me. Begging me to take him. Is round 3, pick 3 too soon?

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

I’d pull the trigger there. Medium risk but a pretty f’n high reward.

EDIT: Only way I wouldn’t is if you think you can nab Julius Thomas a round later and there’s a RB worth taking there, like a Reggie Bush or Montee Ball falls.

          • DoctorRick

We need to find a comfortable, well furnished room for you fantasy guys.

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

Can’t speak for everyone but I happen to find my living room to be that comfortable, well furnished place you speak of. Comes equipped with the red zone channel for us fantasy guys.

Epic fail if you don’t win that league.

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

Depends if his flex lets him start RBs there. His receivers aren’t that strong. I’m still trying to figure out how he nabbed 3 of the top 10(ish) RBs and a top 3 QB.

          • Say No to Marc Mo From Easton

Every league I’ve ever been in allows for you to put an RB at flex. It’s an auction league (which I’ve never been in) so I presume he spent money to make money.

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

I’ve seen some that only allow WR/TE. You can adjust the settings for it on ESPN, not sure about other sites. Also, I’d imagine you’re right in that he had to buy in more. I’ve never done auction but the ones I’ve seen have always been equal amounts for all. Good for him though. He made that draft his B.

          • dnabrice

Auction is the only way to play Fantasy. Everyone has the same amount of cash, and everyone has an opportunity to bid on any player they want to. (There’s no extra buy in so the rich don’t get richer.) If you really want one of the top 5 RB, you don’t get screwed over because you’re picking #10 etc. You can even get 2 of the top 2 RB if you want to spend half your “salary cap” on them….

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

Did you rig the league so you had double the amount of money as everyone else?

          • Andy Six Score and Four

            4-team league?

          • Kleptolia

            Upvote because Gronklema.

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

But Gronksurance is small potatoes? C’mon man!

          • Kleptolia

When I fail, I make sure to fail hard, I guess.

          • OverreacSean Jackson, #culture

I had to retire from Fantasy Football. Stuff is stressful. If I were to play, though, the thing that killed most of my league last year was two good TEs. Dude had Jimmy Graham and Julius Thomas. He got JT because he was unknown. Absolutely murdered our league.

Am I trying to draft a couple people vicariously through you? I mean. Maybe.

          • https://twitter.com/richcolton RichC, brings duck to cockfigh

would you take JT over Gronk? He’s been there too.

          • anon

yes – injuries for gronk and contract year for jt.

          • OverreacSean Jackson, #culture

Yep. More durable and he’ll bring in the points.

        • cliff h-MOAR white goons

8m dead money, but cap hit was 10+m, so cleared couple mill, per OTC. but cleared space next year, which they needed. though, BB isnt scared to push vets out

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

Yeah, realized that Spotrac already moved him to the Bucs and that’s why there was no dead $.

            .
OTC is about as good as it gets. though, when i go to sal calc now i cant get the full grid on this computer. and i stink at computers.

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

Edited my post above. Spotrac had already moved teams and thus his contract didn’t show the dead money now.

    • JofreyRice

Wright could be really productive there. Basically just a big WR that can’t block anyone, but can easily fit into the Hernandez role if Gronk comes back. I think they just replace Mankins with Marcus Cannon, who was really good filling in at T.

      • https://twitter.com/richcolton RichC, brings duck to cockfigh

we already have a big wide receiver who can’t block anyone. Luckily for us, he won’t be on the roster.

        • NickS, Combine Warrior

          We’re not cutting Ertz :)

        • dnabrice

          Hahahaha…

          Damaris Johnson???

      • NickS, Combine Warrior

I agree. Nabbed him in a couple fantasy leagues right away… Did read that they have a bit of a logjam on the line, so, should be a good move by them. Let’s be serious, Mankins might have only a good year, possibly two, left in the tank. If Wright is any bit productive while on his rookie deal, this is robbery. And that’s not even including the 4th round pick.

  • OldDuckMcDoc

And so continues the unparallelled success of the Eagles’ 2011 draft class…

    • A Roy

And with 11 picks, no less. My fervent hope is that the only one left next week is Kelce. (Although Vandevelde returning as a backup is okay.)

    • MediaMike

I really hope that upon retirement both Andy Reid and Howie Roseman write books. I’d love to know how the talent evaluation was that bad for that draft AND free agent class.

      • OldDuckMcDoc

Yeah, I’d love to know what happened to the dynamic there because the way the Eagles tried to build a team in the last few years Andy was here was nothing like the first few years. Wasn’t just talent evaluation in 2011 either. Even the guys that had talent were the douchiest of douchecanoes. Apart from Kelce and Mathis, but Babin made up for those guys by being useless *and* a douchenozzle.

        • RIP illa

          So much truth!

        • Brian Zee

“douchecanoe” made me do a spittake. Hilarious.

  • Eagles4Life

Broncos just traded a conditional 7th for McManus. There goes that idea….

    • https://twitter.com/richcolton RichC, brings duck to cockfigh

Honestly, the idea just got better. McManus is 100% getting cut after week 4. Since it looked like the Eagles were committed to starting the regular season with Henery anyway, he’s got 1 month to prove that we didn’t waste a draft pick on him.

      • Eagles4Life

I wanted Henery out of Philly on the first Amtrak available after Thursday night’s game. Don’t even want a chance for him to sprinkle us with fool’s gold over the first month.

        • MediaMike

I had his ticket purchased after the home wild card choke.

          • anon

            the ghost of donovan mcnabb

      • NickS, Combine Warrior

That ship sailed, Rich. We wasted a draft pick on him.

        • https://twitter.com/richcolton RichC, brings duck to cockfigh

whoa. Only if you incorrectly assume Henery is not good. Henery has made 100% of Eagles field goals AND extra points since 2011.

My name’s rich and I like facts.

      • Token

The Eagles wont cut Henery during the season. They dont have the guts to do that. Hes here another year.

        • DuckHunterSThompson

Just as Chip would never cut a star receiver, or suspend his star running back, or oh wait, your comment makes no sense now that I think about it.
If you’re going to say the Eagles suck at something, or specifically that Chip has a weakness, then you are getting on the right track. It’s kicking. It sucked at Oregon and it sucks now. Maybe he’s just bad at evaluating talent at the kicker position, or doesn’t put enough resources towards that position (scholarships, draft picks, trades, etc.). But saying Chip won’t make a change for the sake of not making a change goes against everything Kelly does and says.

          • anon

he’s bad at kicker b/c he goes against everything he does / says when it comes to a kicker.

          • DuckHunterSThompson

Lol, that’s funny. But no, I don’t think so. I think that either a) Chip saw something in Henery that made him think that he could be good but in reality never will (he sucks at evaluating kicking talent), or b) Kicking is an emotional position and Chip makes them lose confidence or is unable to help them achieve their full potential (he sucks at developing talent). I think that’s more likely than changing his whole philosophy over one position. His philosophy/talent doesn’t work with kickers.

      • PaoliBulldog

If McManus distinguishes himself before Prater returns, then Denver ought to be able to trade him rather than dump him.

        • https://twitter.com/richcolton RichC, brings duck to cockfigh

Possible, but unlikely. Why would any team trade for a player they know will be cut in a few days? I guess the only way that happens is if there are multiple teams looking to swap kickers after week 4 or a kicker injury AND McManus was lights out.

    • JosephR2225

Am I the only one who thought for half a second that Sheil traded Tim to a Denver blog for a conditional 7th?

      • Andy Six Score and Four

I’d insist on more than that.

        • cliff h-MOAR white goons

yeah, Denver would have to take Les Bowen (writer salary dump) too

    • cliff h-MOAR white goons

they’ll be in FG at midfield. guy can boom it, though no one has any idea about his accuraccy.

      • NickS, Combine Warrior

So, our question of whether they could have traded is answered.

        • cliff h-MOAR white goons

yup, till 4. guess GMs put out the list, wait an hour see if phone rings, and if not, move on with day.
          .
certainly seems worth a conditional 7th, though assume used it up for Barner

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

Yeah, would have rather seen it used on McManus. At least could have tried trading Bamiro or someone like that.

          • anon

or a rb. but we already traded for a kicker, they couldn’t keep 3 i don’t think. can’t believe howie couldn’t get that dude from the giants in exchange for a rb.

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

You could have left it at “can’t believe Howie couldn’t get that dude…” and you had me there. Not like he needed to trade Peters to get him. Anyone who’s not making the roster/PS could have been used. The Giants are hurting on O for pretty much anything.

          • cliff h-MOAR white goons

guess glass half fulling it here, worst case is we see Henery for 4 games, and when Prater comes back we’ll know about McManus’ accuraccy. not sure how it works once season starts, are waivers set for the yr?

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

Honestly, not sure how the waiver process works. But I agree that we’ll at least get an idea of how the kid kicks. Either he or Prater are getting released week 4…. Thing is, if that dude is kicking TBs through uprights in preseason in NY, he might boot that ball out of the stadium in Denver.

          • cliff h-MOAR white goons

man, our kicking troubles are common knowledge. Prater’s name skipped my mind, so i quickly went to Denver’s sbnation blog, and read an article about kicking. couple guys were complaining about giving up a 7th, and about 8 posts ensued about never getting past Philly.

          • NickS, Combine Warrior

It’s sad. It’s sad that Henery is known in the other conference to be that f’n bad.

          • https://twitter.com/richcolton RichC, brings duck to cockfigh

          • TNA

It’s like what Maragos said when he was with Seattle. Philly was the team the Hawks didn’t want to face in the playoffs. That’s not going to change unless teams practice against a Philly-type offense day-in, day-out. You can’t really scheme against the Eagles right now while doing your usual game prep against most other teams. I’d think you need at least 3-4 weeks of conditioning and coach up your defense to be able to cohesively think and lineup properly on the fly. That’s the beauty of the Eagles offense (and for practice purposes, the defense). They have players who are mentally way ahead of other teams.

That said, I’ve been watching a bunch of games from the end of last year and I’m hoping Foles continues to show improvement in getting the ball out quickly. The last Dallas game was pretty ugly. He had heaps of time and just couldn’t pull the trigger against a suck-ass secondary. It looked almost like paralysis by analysis with him for a lot of that game.

Also, Boykin continues to confound me. He’s pretty inconsistent. At times he takes terrible angles and gives up big yards. In the games where he made three big-time INTs (one of which was a pick-6), the QBs threw behind the receivers as BB jumped the routes. But I’m hoping he also continues to develop with his coverage.

And Chung is just terrible — especially watching in Condensed Game mode. Just play after play of giving up catches. But the man did give up his body with abandon.

            Anyway…

          • PaoliBulldog

Waivers apply to players with three or fewer accrued NFL seasons, and to all players once the trading deadline passes. Before a player subject to waivers can be released, he must be offered to the other teams in the inverse order of the previous season’s standings. Those teams have 24 hours to either claim him or waive their right to do so. If the player clears waivers, then he becomes a UFA.

Vested veterans (4+ accrued NFL seasons) who are released before the trade deadline do not have to clear waivers. Their contracts are terminated immediately, and they cannot be claimed by another team.

          • PaoliBulldog

Waiver priority determined by previous season’s standings so yes, claiming order is already fixed.

          • cliff h-MOAR white goons

            thnx, pb-dog.

          • PaoliBulldog

For some reason, I have been intrigued by sports waiver systems since I was a kid, but didn’t really understand them until a few years ago. (It helps that I’m an attorney; the rules can be convoluted.)

“Waive” and “release” mean almost but not quite the same thing. Waiver is the relinquishment of a right that hasn’t been exercised yet, while release is the relinquishment of a right that has already been exercised.

So in sports, a player isn’t “waived;” he can be “released” from his contractual obligations only after the other teams waive their right to acquire him, i.e., the player “clears waivers.”

If another team *does* claim the player “off waivers,” then his contractual obligations remain in effect and are assigned to the acquiring team.

I’m probably the only person in the world who cares about the distinction.

          • https://twitter.com/richcolton RichC, brings duck to cockfigh

think you just became the 24/7 waiver guru

            This.

          • MagatBrackendale

That is quite precise. I knew that “waiver” means maybe, maybe not, but you have worded it a lot gooder than me did.

      Continuing the nipple discussion?

  • Token

Well, you gotta give it to the Broncos they are serious about winning. They already have a kicker but since hes out 4 games they are aggressive in going to get who they feel is the best available kicker.

I cant believe we are likely to enter another year of Alex Henery. Even after showing hes even worse this season so far. This staff has to learn when to call it quits on a guy. Especially one who impacts wins and losses.

Now the glass half full….. The Broncos may be the best possible place for McManus to go. You would think they wont carry 2 kickers after Prater is back. So call them up and give them the 7th rounder back in a trade after week 4. I know thats really unlikely, Henery will still be here. But at least its a slight possibility. If he had gone to a kicker needy team he would have likely stayed.

If im trading 7th rounders, I 100% do it for McManus over Barner. A kicker effects games every single game, multiple times a game. Barner if he even makes the team will probably never see the field, at least hopefully not.

    • cliff h-MOAR white goons

good lord, miracles of miracles, we are on the same page ;). Root for Polk, that way barner is cut and that garbage 7th is freed up. nothing has to happen with Henery till after 60 cuts. NO brought the guy in on THurs and went 4/4 in playoff game. honestly, i’d much rather see a vet cold weather kicker. sept, oct and early nov is fools gold, kicking those last 4 or 5 in the Linc (hoping for a playoff game or 2) is where a K makes his money. not sure who that guy is.

      • Token

ust so odd that he cares so much about ST but is content with a dog kicker. Kind of makes all the rest meaningless.

        • peteike

yup, strange and its kind of important, dont cha think Howie. Why I was bringing up whether they jumped the gun yesterday per making that Indy trade or whatever it was. Simply for having that guy practice or with team instead of waiting a bit and grabbing one of these other guys to compete. I still think some of the vet names out there as kickers are fine. Bironas, Akers, Tynes but just take the one who can kick it out of the end zone.

          • anon

why they even took murderleg into camp is strange to me. someone isn’t very bright but i can’t understand who that might be.

          • DoctorRick

He didn’t cost a lot to take a flyer.
I am concerned at the seeming nonchalance attention paid to the kicker. I doubt this is the case, given the attention to detail everywhere else but I do not understand the metrics. One of our kindred, reasonableaglesfan, thinks the metrics on Henery pan out but I think it would take a regression to the mean much higher than I can see, for Henery to pan out. I would really like to be wrong on this.

          • PaoliBulldog

Cliff, I think he had a good kicker for a couple of year Can’t remember the name.

Amazing to see Molk rise this high on a roster considering the monumentally bad college coaching he needed to overcome in order to get here. Well done and Michigan sucks!

The Giants only get the 7th rounder if McManus is on the Broncos roster past week 4. So they basically get to rent him for nothing. Giants probably figured we would have interest and shipped him off. We may get a crack at him going into week five. Offer them Henery and a 7th right now :)

Also the Lions claimed a kicker. So this Denver thing may end up being good. Some guy on twitter said the Eagles would of had interest which is why the Giants traded him. Wonder if that interest will be around in a few weeks or if they are gonna go with another option before then?

I’m surprised you’d be willing to give up a 7th for a completely unproven player. I agree Henery sucks and I’d give up the pick too, to be fair.

Not that it’s really that important, but I don’t see anything on the Lions picking up a kicker. They released one of their kickers (Tavecchio) though in favor of the kid they drafted (Freese).

Smart on both sides to negotiate a buyout rather than put him into a year of IR purgatory. If he recovers quickly & Iggles need an extra OL, he is available without restriction. I just wonder what the buyout terms are.

This kicker situation is really starting to perturb me something fierce. Sign someone, trade for someone, bring someone in to try out…something.

Alex Henery will become the bain of my existence if he’s still here by week 5. Do something please!

    Re McManus

If the Broncos trade McManus before the 4th game, do they still have to give up their 7th rounder? If not and if Huff is ready by wk 4, the Eagles should consider trading Barner and Henery to the Broncos for McManus. Henery would essentially be a one week rental before Pratt comes off suspension.

    • Jerry Pomroy

Denver has a history of liking kickers that can boom it. But maybe Henery would gain some height & distance from the thin air out in Denver. Won’t fix his mental block on his accuracy though.

Denver’s altitude has something to do with that perception. The ball travels a little more easily.
