Open Thread: NFL Draft, Day 3

USATSI_7408612_168380503_lowres
Last day of the draft. How quickly it goes.

The Eagles have four picks in rounds 4-7:

Round 4 (101)
Round 5 (141)
Round 5 (162)
Round 7 (224)

We'll drop in with comments all day long. The fun begins at noon.

1:09 - Apologies for the lack of updates. It's been a busy day here! The Eagles took DB Jaylen Watkins in the fourth round. Chip Kelly raved about Watkins' football IQ. He could see time at cornerback or safety, although the guess here is safety is more likely. Watkins ran a 4.41 at the combine. If he were healthy, he said he would have had the fastest time of any cornerback.

Meanwhile, the Eagles have traded RB Bryce Brown to the Bills. They move up in the seventh round this year and get a conditional third or fourth round pick. That's the pick the Bills acquired from the 49ers in the Stevie Johnson trade.

    Are we trading this pick?

  • SVPhilly

    Or getting another WR?

  • phillylove21

Here we go! All a board!!! Next stop…… Building our dynasty!!!

  • Hanibal Luis

    Trade perhaps. Taking time.

  • Mitesh

I’m not liking this draft. Our offense was solid last year. And we saw from this past SB, even the greatest of offenses won’t win you anything. I wish Chip addressed our defense with plug-in right away, impact players on D.

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

good Lord did you miss the first round linebacker pick? Wtf some fans

      • RIP illa

        Lol. Just breathe Rob

        • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

I wish Sheil/Tim interviewed potential commenters like CK does prospects. Low IQ need not apply

      • Eagles1018

Rob we need inside help to spell Ryans. Tripp woulda been nice

        • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

Who’d they take? I like Tripp too

          • Rahkem

            Jaylen Watkins

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

            Thanks, no tv today

          • Rahkem
          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

            Not so smart smartphone

          • Eagles1018

            They took Watkins

        • Rahkem

I think tripp willl be there in round 5 , alot of concern over his arm length , we could trade back into the 4th fairly easily for a late rounder in next years draft just wait out the round and see how it plays out

          • Richard Colton

was going to say the same thing

        • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

named Goode and Knott. No day 3 guy is coming in and making a big impact there anyway. If so, it’s an absolute steal

      • Rahkem

Lol people want us to get sizzle but i learned a while ago that scheme fit beats talent , Watkins has potential at both corner and saety they basically hit 2 need with one pick potentially. They can still swoop back and get another CB with the first pick of round 5. Im willing to bet some good ones will be there

        • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

Im ok with him. Liked Desire and dontae johnson, but day 3 I’m ok with most everyone.

    • Paul Dixon

You hit it right on the head, why aren’t they drafting impact players that can start immediately? I know that if I were drafting a team those are the only players I would take. I’ll bet there isn’t another team in the league that is on to this strategy, if more teams drafted impact stars that could start immediately, their teams would win the Superbowl that year! We should tell Chip and Howie to please take only bona fide, guaranteed studs who can start immediately, because clearly they are targeting only players they are sure will suck! The real burning question here is, why haven’t you taken your innovative draft philosophy to the Nova Care complex so you can get a gig as a personnel man…if you hurry, they may hire you before their next pick!

      Go Birds

      • RIP illa

And who were those impact players at 22? Cuz I thought I saw all of them gone by the time we were up. And note that I’m not in love with Marcus as much as many on here.
I think Matthews will be or develop into a big part of this O and make an impact, immediately, as our 3rd WR.
Huff, thought we coulda got him later, and did not like the pick at that spot, but I’m not down on him either, cuz he just made our receiving corp that much deeper.
Watkins is a great pick for this spot. We just got a corner in the 4th, that can see a bunch of playing time and become legit in a year or so, when we are moving on from our older or overpriced starters. Or maybe he allows Boykin to move to the outside and get more PT, plus he just adds instant depth in case of injury.
So honest question…who are these impact players that we missed? Cuz other than the Huff pick, I don’t see it.

        • Richard Colton

Ruban Frank just reported that Jaylen Watkins’ 10th grade home economics teacher was Nate Allen’s mom.

          • RIP illa

I don’t know why, but I laughed when I read that.
Anyway on the topic of Allen…I think he can still grow in this system and be better than he was towards the end of last season. As I said before, I’d like to see us Johnson and have our S corp be Allen, Jenkins, Wolff, Johnson, and…ugh…Maragos. With Johnson and Wolff taking over in a season or two.

        • Paul Dixon

Sarcasm: the use of irony to mock or convey contempt.

Clearly you need to read my post again.

          • RIP illa

Yup. That was my bad. I’m too used to seeing sarcastic post being more concise and to the point. And completely didn’t read through.

    • Richard Colton

what plug-in right away day one starting defender did you see outside of round one?

  • SVPhilly

They picked, hoping for defensive help

  • Hanibal Luis

    Jaylen Watkins, DB.

  • PaoliBulldog

    Another versatile DB.

  • Eagles1018

Here we go. The bad brother. I give up. Watch Tripp disappear. And at DB I’d prefer Desir. God

    • Richard Colton

Desir looks like he has more playmaking ability – higher ceiling. Watkins was on the radar though. Can’t call it a bad pick.

  • SVPhilly

Fill us in Sheil and Tim :-)

  • Joe Thomas

Good pick, versatile, makes sense. I preferred Desir, but time will tell.

    • PaoliBulldog

SEC competition versus D2 probably a factor.

      • Joe Thomas

Yea and he is also about a second faster, Chip likes speed. Definitely a solid pick

  • RIP illa

Wow, they actually picked a guy that I wanted!!! Well I wanted Huff too (not in the 3rd), but that was before we got rid of DJax. Was thinking we would stay with the bigger bodies when that happened.

  • Token

So whats the scoop here…. I hear he can lineup in the slot or play a little safety. So hes versatile. But is he talented? I just hope he can be a solid slot corner in the NFL so Boykin can get a chance outside.

    • Adam

Fast, strong guy who is projected to be a #3 or 4 CB in the NFL.

    • RIP illa

Yes he’s talented, but inexperienced or raw, so to speak. I’m pretty sure that the ranking of Florida DBs, last year, went Roberson, Watkins, Purifoy. It’s a very solid pick and especially at this spot.

      • Token

Think they view him as a safety? Curious to see what Chip says

        • RIP illa

Me too. I can’t call it right now. Maybe you can get your wish and he takes over for Boykin, on the inside next year, and Boykin can move to the outside! So I guess, I’m hoping that he’s a CB…would like to see our Safeties be a bit bigger than him, moving forward. Either way, I actually love this pick!!! Setting up our secondary past C-Will and perhaps Fletch. Plus more speed!!!

Just want us to somehow grab Dontae Johnson at S, so we can move on, eventually/whenever and as starters, from Nate, Maragos, and Jenkins. That is, if Wolff keeps developing

    • ohitsdom

I believe Matt Miller was a big fan, said he was Florida’s best DB. “Fluid hips” is how he described him. He’s forty time shows speed, his bench press showed strength.

  • Bird of Prey

How can they draft Watkins above Desir? The last two picks leave me perplexed. The best D-back I saw at the senior bowl practices was Desir. Watkins was projected 5-7. I’m going to mow the lawn.

    • Tikkit

      Listed at 5’11”
      Edit: You meant rounds. Duh…

      • RIP illa

5’11 is the general cutoff for Davis’ cutoff for the “bigger people…” philosophy.

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

      Hope its a big lawn

    • Rahkem

Watkins is alot faster and played against better competition, Desir played D2 ball alot harder to evaluate while Watkins played 4 years in the SEC. That matters to teams , D2 players have to completely dominate.

    • RIP illa

Cause Watkins is stronger, faster, and has played against way better competition. Desir is a decent prospect and although he played well in the East West Shrine game and Senior Bowl (Better in the EWS game), He stills shows some stiffness in his hips (but still way better than McGill) and less experience/feel for the position than Watkins and others.

      • Adam

I’ve heard Desir isn’t that bright as well. Intelligence is something Chip values.

        • Token

Yea he doesnt seem to like idiots. Seems he really values your passion for playing the game too. Gotta have that passion for football to play for Chip.

        • RIP illa

I think I heard something about that also. I’m more concerned about his age tho…or should I say actual/real age. I learned, awhile ago, when playing soccer with Haitians and Africans, to never take their supposed age at face value. LOL.

    • Mike

You know who else they said had a good senior bowl in 2012 Brandon Taylor how’d he do, how about Nigel Bradham or in 2011 Christian Ponder or Kendrick Burney, one week of practice shouldn’t be what makes you pick a player

  • Eagles1018

Devonta Freeman had Uncle Luke in the background lol. For you young guys look up 2 Live Crew

    • Hanibal Luis

      Really? Get out :D

  • Token

So this allows them to keep on less corner or safety on the final 53, so they have room for more WRs from Oregon.

  • oreofestar

Wanted Desir but I had Watkins, Exum, and others ranked similarly and have zero problem witht he pick

  • oreofestar

5’11 1/2 so decent size but good athleticism

  • Chip Kelly

Yet again, another high-character, cerebral, and versatile player picked! There’s a method and madness to everything done by CK. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1DPDFP521Y

    • Richard Colton

good clip. Rachel Klein looks like Blossom’s hot younger sister

  • Richard Colton

Thinking we were never going to take Christian Jones. The report of the failed drug test was just too recent. Eagles have shown they will reach for a character guy like Bennie Logan, but skip value reaches like Honey Badger and Vontaze. I’m bitter – ’cause this D needs some playmakers.

    • Adam

      waaahhhh

      • Richard Colton

got it Adam – you like everyone today

        • Adam

What was wrong with this pick?

Your qualifications for a good draft was getting starters with your first 3 picks. Was Bennie not our starting NT last year?

Honey Badger and Burfict are the exceptions, not the rules. For every one of them there are 10 bad character don’t cut it.

          • Richard Colton

I like the pick. Just opining on C.Jones. Don’t think we take him at all, even if he’s there at 141.

And yeah – people forget, because he played really well, but Logan was considered a bit of a reach. Outside of walterfootball, most people had him in the 4th. Gives me some hope for Huff.

    • RIP illa

I agree. I would still hope and would like to see us take some chances on later round guys who are superior athletes/talent, over questionable character…within reason. I think this is the year to do so.

      • Richard Colton

I’m just picturing Jones/Smith in a 3rd down blitz package.

        • RIP illa

          HaHa…I like it.

  • Hanibal Luis

    Bye bye Marsh and/or Roc.

    • Token

      Cary, Fletch, Boykin, Carrol, Watkins

Id say both are gone. With Watkins it allows you to save a roster spot really. Cuz you may be able to keep on less corner or safety since he can do both in theory.

      • Hanibal Luis

Its a solid theory, especially if you have two swing DBs.

  • oreofestar

Like Ellis went a little earlier than I thought

  • Chip Kelly

The next pick will be a player who was a former QB, can play multiple positions, good kid, and played in either the PAC10 or SEC…just saying.

  • RIP illa

Damn, I really loved Ellis as a day 3 guy. Unbelievable quickness and agility for a guy that weighed 350+. He would have been a great NT (whether backup or not) for us, if given a little time.

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

      Zach Kerr! Dream still alive!

      • RIP illa

        HaHa…yes it is.

  • oreofestar

Ok Hart, Zumwalt,Johnson some guys to look at for 5th round

  • oreofestar

Crockell went before Desir no way there is not some stuff we do not know about him does not matter I am very satisfied with Watkins even if we took him at 86 I would not have minded

    • RIP illa

Yeah, if he has dropped this far and is still getting passed up, then something’s definitely wrong with him.

  • oreofestar

Also look out for Tyler Starr

  • Adam

Bryce Brown traded to Buffalo for conditional 2015 pick.

    • Hanibal Luis

      Get out? Really?

      • Adam

Apparently, but none of the beat writers have confirmed it.. they’re at the Watkins presser

    • oreofestar

Where did you see it, if it is true we need to add another RB

    • Richard Colton

      speculating or did that happen?

      • Adam

Just saw some tweets but nothing with any weight to it has said yet. Beat writers are tweeting Watkins presser.

    • DAS

Until I’m personally notified by Adam Schefter, I don’t believe it.

      • Chip Kelly

        It’s now Scheficial!

        • Richard Colton

4th round, possible 3rd? that sounds like a fleecing. almost too good to be true.

    • Token

hmmm. Well I dont care that hes gone, this hes very overrated by many. But do they really view Sproles as the #2 RB? Cuz I dont know about that.

      • Adam

I’m not sure, but I think Polk is the guy they would view as the #2, if his shoulder is alright.

        • Token

          Forever banged up Polk?

Are there RBs left that can contribute in this offense?

          • Adam

Well we only really need a 3rd down/change of pace back. Lots of good backs available, first one wasn’t taken until pick 54. They’re devalued like crazy.

          • Token

I think they need a legit RB behind McCoy. You can make a case that if McCoy got injured last year we could really be thinking differently about everything. If theres one player that made it go it was McCoy IMO.

If he goes down it could get ugly. Id like to see a talent behind him. Sproles could help but I dont see him as the answer. maybe they do.

          • RIP illa

I agree with you and Polk ain’t it. I like Tucker, from what little I saw of him, but he ain’t it either…at least for now. And old ass Sproles has never been it!!! Gotta get somebody real. I liked Mason, Archer, and McKinnon. But they are all gone, so whose left? I also like Talifero, but more so for his pass pro. Don’t see him as a special runner, and we don’t use or put emphasis on our RBs in the traditional sense…ie pass pro

      • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

I bet Polk, and a late pick or UDFA makes team

        • Token

Polk isnt that exciting. Always seems banged up. But I like his style. I havent paid much attention to RBs at all. For all I know theres some beasts still available.

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

            To your last line….yes indeed

          • RIP illa

Yeah I don’t see Polk ever turning into the heir apparent. So who are the best RBs still left? All the ones I liked are gone.

        • B-West

Tucker is still around too, right? I kinda like Polk tho.

        • cliff henny

Crowell. is getting pulled over with loaded assault rifle a character issue? in SC, it’s kind of a grey area

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

Im always partial to guys named Storm, too

    • cliff henny

good, be an absolute ton of 7th/UDFAs to choose from, worst case

      • oreofestar

How about Seastrunk in the 5th

        • cliff henny

one of the Oregon guys said Kelly and him were at odds over recruiting…but yeah, skillset, no brainer

    • B-West

Making room for DAT. Here we go.

      • RIP illa

I hope not. Just really not hyped up for DAT

        • Richard Colton

          different players

    • jpate

It just got confirmed by Mosher

    • RIP illa

      BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

  • oreofestar

Glad guys like Huff and Watkins can destry some pepole’s roster spots want guys like Kruger, Long, Goode on team Marsh and Roc should both not make team and Huff and Benn are 4 and 5 in whatever order pushing Smith, Maehl, and Johnson down

  • jpate

I wonder if this philosophy for high character only guys is just to establish a good locker room culture and once that’s accomplished they will be willing to take risks on talented but questionable character players. I hope that’s the case cause sometimes you gotta take those risk for value

    • Chip Kelly

Howie: “”Culture’s really important to us. Culture and chemistry is a huge part
of building a football team…When you talk about 53 guys trying to come together, which I
think we saw towards the end of last year, the second half of last
year, you’re talking about people from diverse backgrounds, different
parts of the country, and they’re all trying to fit together. So getting
that chemistry – this is the one sport where one guy is not gonna make
the difference. You need to have a team. It’s very important to us when
we talk about guys and having the right fits here in our building . . .
We’re really excited about the energy we have from our football team. So
for us to go out of left field and bring someone in who doesn’t fit, I
look at it that our players look at us when we bring in draft picks.
They look at who we put in front of that podium, and if that guy’s not a
fit for us, that’s my responsibility. They’re gonna look at me and say,
‘We have a good thing going here. We have good chemistry. We have a
good culture. Why would we ruin that by bringing in somebody who doesn’t
      fit?’ “

      • jpate

That sounds like a long term plan. No complaints

    • B-West

I would love to see a study on it to see the numbers. Maybe against HOFers and Pro Bowlers. It does seem like some of the best players in the league have blemishes on their character record. The best player on the current team, Shady, has some suspect off the field moments.

  • Token

Watkins vs LSU in 2012, lined up on Beckham Jr a lot. Beckham went 2 for 47 yards this year against FL but I dont know if Watkins covered him.

  • jpate

Mayock spitting out nicknames and personal stories for players and for eagles selection “really solid here”.

    • Adam

      Well we’re screwed then.

  • DAS

    And there goes Aaron Colvin

  • Hanibal Luis

    Colvin to JAX

    • oreofestar

      nice pick y JAX

      • Hanibal Luis

I like JAX draft overall, double if they hit on Bortles.

  • oreofestar

Personally I think JAX has had the best draft

    • Chip Kelly

      Them and the Rams…A draft

      • oreofestar

        yes the Rams too

  • jmkrav

B/R has him as a 2nd round talent. This scouting report makes him sound a lot like Boykin.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1939950-jaylen-watkins-nfl-draft-2014-highlights-scouting-report-more

  • jpate

    Geoff Mosher ‏@GeoffMosherCSN 1m
Eagles have traded Bryce Brown to the Bills, per source. #Eagles get a future pick. More details will come.

  • cliff henny

Brown…4th next yr, or 3rd in ’16 if he kills it.

    • oreofestar

That is actually not bad compensation

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

      Really? Damn that’s a coup

      • cliff henny

yup, it’s official, adam schefler reported it

    • Token

seriously? wow Howie just fleeced the Bills.

    • Hanibal Luis

Hey now! Buffalo is playing for keeps. Manuel sucks, but good for them :P

      • cliff henny

yup, I root for them, they’re harmless to eagles

    • jpate

      Wow

    • Chip Kelly

Good trade Howie…never a good fit in our spread offense. All he did was run toward the sideline..

      • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

        Howie is OWNING trades

        • Chip Kelly

Pending Hinke’s draft this class, best GM in our city.

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

            Im excited for Hextall

          • Chip Kelly

            Me too.

        • Hanibal Luis

Yes sir. 6 picks my tuckus, they’ve been wheeling and dealing.

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

great use of tuckus. you’ve been killing it, hanibal. stick around :)

          • Hanibal Luis

Thank you sir. I was lurking for a year, studying posts, learning everyone’s moves, doing the film work, also hitting the weight room.

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

very chip of you. however, I imagine he would take umbrage with some of the character red flags ’round these parts

    • tbwhite

plus since it’s the Bills it will be a high 4th or 3rd

      • cliff henny

early 4th for a backup, yeah, that’s killing it. would you blink if Kelly digs up an UDFA who gets 500yds/4tds this yr? I know I wouldnt

        • tbwhite

the question now is do they keep the pick or turn around and deal it to move up today, or for another 5th rounder today

        • Hanibal Luis

They way RBs are dropping, they can find someone in the 7th or UDFA.

      • B-West

Its the 9ers pick unforunately. (From the Stevie Johnson deal)

  • B-West

    Wow Buffalo.

  • oreofestar

so no immediate returns but we are getting a 4th of hell possibly a 3rd for Brown okay DAT with the 2nd 5th

  • Goombachiphi

cue people complaining that we got worse during the off-season

    • oreofestar

easily got better on both sides of the ball

  • oreofestar

Bills better hope Manuel delivers cuz they got no picks next year

    • Chip Kelly

Last year draft’s QB class was so bad.

      • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

this one stinks too! glad we got Folesy

  • Adam

Could be DAT in the 5th now #OregonBias

    • Hanibal Luis

      Dat I don’t know.

  • Eagles1018

Bryce Brown for a mid round…. Next year?!

    • Eagles1018

Does that mean we have DAT coming in?

      • oreofestar

        thinking him or Seastrunk

    • oreofestar

yes 4th round pick next year could turn into 3rd

  • addicted2mula

Trading Brown for a pick next year. Hope they get Thomas

  • Hanibal Luis

McGill to the Raiders. Apparently he has some off the field issues.

    • oreofestar

      and his old…

    • Token

barely can play cornerback. Just a big body you hope is coachable.

      • Hanibal Luis

        Glad he isn’t here.

  • Hanibal Luis

So the 4th for Brown is SF’s 4th so not as high as we might have hoped for but still good deal. Better if it becomes a 3rd.

    • Chip Kelly

pick 141 seems like an eternity right now…

    • tabu34

Rumor swirling that we ALSO swapped 7ths with the Bills.

      • Hanibal Luis

Wel, well, well, yet another Ace.

  • Adam

Spent a 7th on him, has less than 200 carries, wheel him for a 4th that’ll possibly be a 3rd. Now that’s what I call value.

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

Howie’s world, we’re all just living in it

    • Richard Colton

we got a potential 3rd round pick for our 3rd RB? unreal. Makes me think Howie should be able to get something for Brandon Graham.

  • jpate

Just realized we haven’t seen what kind of RB Chip looks for. Hasn’t drafted one yet.

    • Adam

I’m think you’ll see soon enough.

      • jpate

        CANT WAIT!

    • Chip Kelly

Sproles, DAT, LaMichael James- Smaller and fast..don’t forget versatile.

  • Reasonableeaglefan

I’m going to go out on a limb and predict we take another “versatile” player with our next pick

  • Hanibal Luis

Logan Thomas to ARI. I quietly had hope for him as a surprise pick for PHI.

    • Chip Kelly

I have a feeling Brett Smith could be that pick

  • tabu34

    Jeff McLane @Jeff_McLane 3m
    A little more clarity on compensation for Bryce Brown: #Eagles and #Bills swap 7th rders and Birds get 1 of 3: ’15 4th or ’16 3d or ’16 4th.

    • Hanibal Luis

Excellent! Don’t have to wait too long in the 7th. Let’s see who drops.

    • jpate

2016 4th is worse case scenario. Will take it for 7th round back up.

    • tabu34

Also, the pick we get is based on how well Stevie Johnson performs for SF, not how well BB performs for Bills.

      Beautiful.

    • Will

Lets hope Stevie Johnson plays well this year…

      • Michael

        At least 15 games…

  • Guest

so did we trade back again?

    • EaglesFanInPhx

no trades today other than BB so far for eagles

    • oreofestar

no we lost 122 when we went up for Matthew

  • Mikeq

They don’t give out a lot of them, but these comp picks still sort of tick me off. Why should a team be bailed out for mis-managing their cap and being unable to sign their own guys? Should start at the end of the 5th round at the earliest too.

    • All Things Bad@ss

I hear ya. I believe the intent is to keep the playing field level. Take ‘em away and a little tear will roll down Newsome’s face. I agree though, nothing sooner than a 5th

      • Mikeq

Baltimore does seem to get a ton lately, don’t they? Of course I’d be vehemently defending the picks if the Eagles got a few.

  • oreofestar

    Andy took DAT

  • Eagles1018

AR picked up DAT. Oh well

    • oreofestar

      Seastrunk brah

    • tbwhite

on ESPN they say DAT is a McCluster replacement, I guess they didn’t want to leave that spot on the bench empty. Reid is a dope.

  • Hanibal Luis

Andy trolling us :D DAT to KC.

  • oreofestar

Also guys the conditions for the Brown pick have nothing to do with how he preforms it is based on how Stevie Johnson performs

  • Doctor Jay

Andy’s got a bucket of KFC on is stomach and a grin on his face :D

  • oreofestar

Another Corner CLE and no WRS?

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

starting to think they’ll all be 2-way players, like back in the day

  • Token

I wasnt interested in DAT to begin with, Andy liking him just reassures me.

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

still surprised how high he and Dri went. 3rd and 4th? or was it 2nd and 4th? either way, glad it was too high for us

      • Hanibal Luis

And that’s the thing, mid 2nd on the pre calculated value went out the window. Teams started picking who they liked and a lot of the mock projections went haywire.

        • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

          worse than march madness brackets.

If you told me thursday afternoon we’d come out of the draft with Matthews, Smith, plus 5 other picks and a 4th (possible) 3rd next year for Bryce? yes please.
2 immediate contributors, next 2 are role/ST/depth players this year with chance to stick around, and from here on out it’s all projects anyway. I’m content

          • Hanibal Luis

Same here. Going in with only 6 picks worried me, but gosh dog it they have stretched it out nice. Plus, taking guys they like and fit needs.

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

underrated and won’t be mentioned again after the weekend, but trading to get the 1st pick in 4th and 5th is huge too, gave us a lot of flexibility to trade it today. Glad they grabbed Watkins, but that’s just awesome positioning.

I’m sure there are some Howie haters left. But getting harder to objectively justifty those emotions

  • Hanibal Luis

    Desir to CLE

  • All Things Bad@ss

Not knocking Matthews or Jaylen, but it’s a tad bit concerning that we always seem to get the bloodline, but not the blood. Like Casey, not Clay. Like Jordan Matthews, not Jerry Rice. And now Jaylen, not Sammy. True, both Sammy and Jaylen are unproven, but I’ll go out on a limb to say that Sammy will have the better career.

    • Adam

Yeah I’m pretty pissed we passed on Jerry Rice this year too

      • All Things Bad@ss

Too many red flags I suppose

        • Wilbert31

          Slow 40 time

    • Will

People are putting too much thought into this heredity thing… Look Andy just whiffed on Casey Mathews….

      • All Things Bad@ss

Not much thought at all actually .. just a trivial comment.

        • Will

Some people, not you, have really taken that to heart.

    • aub32

I have more hope for jaylen The last cb we took who dropped due to an injury senior bowl worked out pretty well

      • Will

        Best on the team

      • All Things Bad@ss

        No doubt.

  • oreofestar

DAMN Johnson hate the Niners bro

  • Eagles1018

Dontae Johnson gone. Please get Tripp. I know Hart and Mauro are still there but with Kruger coming off ir we need to spell DMeco.

  • Hanibal Luis

    10 more picks.

  • oreofestar

Brock Vereen a solid pick right here

  • oreofestar

man 5 QBs taken cuz I am not counting Thomas wow..they gotta start coming off the board eventually

  • Hanibal Luis

    Urban gone now.

  • Hanibal Luis

    And Wild Savage to Houston.

  • oreofestar

Mccaron still surprises not Mttenburger though injury issue plus bad character plus 3rd round talent equals 5th round pick

    • Hanibal Luis

Plus “diluted” drug sample for ZM.

  • Hanibal Luis

    Dozier to the Jets.

  • oreofestar

Okay Yankey, Zumwalt, Seastrunk, Hart who do you guys have here

    • Chip Kelly

      Zumwalt!

    • Hanibal Luis

Zumwalt for ILb would be nice if Jones is not on their board. Skov?

    • Mikeq

I’d take Seastrunk now that Brown is gone. I think Atlanta is going to take him though.

      • oreofestar

they just took an RB though

        • Mikeq

          Oh, I didn’t see that. Damn multi-tasking…

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

I’m good with any, plus Tripp or that canadian lineman

      • oreofestar

cANADIEN Lineman I mean isn’t it a little too soon

        • Doctor Jay

          never too soon ay

        • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

this kid has heart and wants to play.

and big difference between 1st rd pick and 5th or 7th

    • RIP illa

I don’t understand the Zumwalt love. Thought he wasn’t athletic. And I believe, after seeing Ryans and his lack of athleticism, that that is what we need next to Kendricks. Of course it would be great if Bennie has gotten a lot stronger and stout, and/or we can draft a NT in the 7th, that can keep our ILBs clean.

  • Cam in Eugene

    Seastrunk was briefly a duck

  • Cam in Eugene

    Hart is a Duck

    • Cam in Eugene

      Gotta throw Azz a bone.

    • RIP illa

And will probably be an Eagle now that Urban is gone. However, looks like we have a need for a competent backup RB, so I think the next 2 picks will be RB and Hart. If Chip can resist the urge to draft another WR or TE. :-)

      • Cam in Eugene

I don’t see our RB core as a need area right now. I’d be happy with Hart and Tripp, then whatever Chip go nuts in UDFA.

        • RIP illa

I can see that. Just not confident in Sproles or Polk to take on a significant workload, toting the rock.

          • Cam in Eugene

I think Polk is going to be a vastly improved back this year.

  • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

RB SLEEPER: Andrew Pierce, delaware. Caught his freshman year taking a grad class, when he was all-american. Incredible talent. Give me him and Kerr as UDFAs. #fightingcocks

    • Chip Kelly

      • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

nice, thanks. I thought he was better than the Towson kid that was yeasted up to CLE in the 3rd

    • Hanibal Luis

      What position?

    • cliff henny

yankey, jones, t-smith, couple rbs, someone is going to be there

  • tabu34

    Oooh, Ravens take McCarron. Interesting.

    • oreofestar

      huh?

      • tabu34

Ravens took a QB. I guess they are unsettled at backup? Found it odd.

        • tabu34

Apparently ESPN got it wrong. Good job.

  • james1991

    Christian Jones and David Yankee

    • phillylove21

      Please

    • cliff henny

must have been some serious hot piss for CJ. no idea why yankey fell, but another Stanford ol went before him

  • Hanibal Luis

    Shembo to ATL.

  • oreofestar

    Okay lets go!!!

    • cliff henny

      rb? BB trade?

      • oreofestar

        maybe Seastrunk

        • cliff henny

rumor by Oregon guy on this board said Kelly and him were on really bad terms after recruiting…and those guys are obsessed with that stuff, so sort of believe it

      • RIP illa

I blame us trading BB, Solely on you Cliff!!!

        • cliff henny

good! sort of makes my day RIP…if you would have just apologized when I asked you too

          • RIP illa

I only take solace in the fact that you didn’t get your boy Evans, and the 8 other wideouts you wanted!

          • cliff henny

got 2! 3rd one is coming!!! think this draft is going well. this bpa and pick number think pople get all obsessed over. look at sf, think they are having garbage draft. get me players, I’m happy

  • Chip Kelly

HERE WE GO!! WHO is the big chippah picking?!

    • RIP illa

You don’t have time to post!!! Get the pick in!!! :-)

      • cliff henny

f-that! why did you take Huff in 3rd!!!!

      • Chip Kelly

        Shhhhh :-)

  • JAMIN67

Interesting pick coming up here…curious to see what we’ll do….

  • oreofestar

I predict Hart…lots of options though imagine they take Jones

  • jpate

taking lot of time…trying to trade back?

    • oreofestar

      maybe

  • oreofestar

    No trade we are picking

  • Hanibal Luis

    Hart hahahaha

  • oreofestar

    Yep Hart I like it

  • Eagles1018

5th rd pick is….Taylor hart. I guess we don’t want coverage lbs to help out DeMeco and get off the field on third down

    • cliff henny

or CJ’s piss was not only hot, but flames burned the cup and he’ll be there in 20 picks

      • oreofestar

yeah..I mean he is a 3rd round talent it has to be that drug think I doubt Lache makes in to 162 but I would like him

      • JAMIN67

I can’t see us taking him even in 20 picks. If you’re dumb enough to smoke a doob KNOWING that you’re gonna get tested, I’m pretty sure Chip doesn’t want you.

        • cliff henny

is that what it was for? guy was talked as 2nd, cant believe a little sticky icky drops guy 2 or 3 rds. he might of had a straw or a needle hanging out his arm while p’ing

          • JAMIN67

No, not sure what it was for. No one ever said, but that’s the rumor.

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

eh, not the seriousness of the drug, just the overall poor judgement. I bet Chip would ding a guy for jaywalking the day before the combine or draft. just not wise.

subplot for 2014: I’m curious who, of all these fsu defenders, were really the premier talents and who benefitted from having said talents next to them (i.e.- the CAR safety who we didn’t get in FA, thank the lord, because he played behind that fantastic front 7)
my one guess/guarantee? joyner is a stud. but jones? curious about him…

          • cliff henny

oh, I know it really really REALLY stupid, but there’s lot of different things that cause failed test. think if it was just a diluted sample, he wouldn’t fall this far. weed, mean, that’s dumb, really dumb, but talent is talent. Kelly’s from Oregon too, trust me, he knows how to get guys to pass drug tests for weed

          • JAMIN67

Well, I got a feeling we’ll know in about 12 picks how much he values judgement.

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

see: current depth chart. And if they trust Kendricks he may stay on as MIKE with smith and barwin.

      RELAX wtf

      • Eagles1018

Acho, Goode, Hunt, Matthews, Kendricks, Ryans, Kaddu, Knott, Long, Phillips. All potential ILBs right? Help me understand who’s the guy “wtf”

        • Eagles1018

Name someone after Goode that you believe in after our 2 starters….

        • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

I’d say Goode and Knott first off bench at ILB.
Also, chance with better secondary to play more nickel, maybe even a dime look, working under assumption Kendricks has a bigger role and can stay on as single MIKE. Philips was hurt all year, who knows maybe he wins first backup job?
PLUS still 2 more picks. but that’s an aside, no day 3 player was making a big difference to begin with.
Lastly, it’s all holistic. Ryans snaps weren’t just no depth but (1) defense couldn’t get off field, that should improve; (2) he was the mic and the leader, malcolm jenkins can help in that role no

the “wtf” is in regard to your apparent exasperation. I think you’re madly overreacting

          • RIP illa

I think Knott is overvalued/rated by us, and even the coaching staff. Lack of size, strength, speed. I don’t care how hard he may work or how football smart he seems…when a player is lacking in those categories, specifically, I just can’t put that much faith in them. And Phillips is a ST ace that hasn’t done anything in 4-5yrs of play. Not trying to argue, just my opinions. I do/did think that it was very important that we find Ryans replacement this year. So that he could take time and learn and grow before being thrown into the fire, and so we are not hurting while he’s learning. But let’s see what we get in terms of the last 2 picks and UDFAs. Every ILB, that hasn’t been picked yet, still are of some interest to me. With the exception of Skov…way too much damage done to his body.

          • Eagles1018

Let you tell it…bottom line, our 3rd down defense got destroyed over the middle. Do you recall how many 3rd and very longs we gave up? Most of the LBs on the roster were there last year. If the solution was already on the team there’d be nothing to be exasperated about

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

players do tend to improve, especially when they’re young and actually in the second year of a scheme (with a returning DC/coach) for the 1st time in awhile.
Plus new S, new CB, and new rookie DB.

        • cliff henny

why cant barwin move inside in ’15? might not be optimal, but listening to Howie, sounds like Long is forcing eagles hand to find him some PT

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

depending on Long and Smith, Barwin may be gone

          • cliff henny

smith, and long with barwin and Kendrick inside, who knows.

    • Doctor Jay

there there we pick again soon!

      • Eagles1018

What’s Kruger gonna do when he comes back?

        • Doctor Jay

have a good rookie behind him

        • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

fight for a spot, like everyone else. Why would a 7th rounder who spent the year on injured reserve have any kind of grip on a roster spot? It was bare back there. Bair and Square can both go, and Geathers already went.

  • JAMIN67

Yup, Hart it is…I like it.

  • Cam in Eugene

There you go, Azz is satisfied.

  • JAMIN67

We should definitely try to unload Graham now. I’d take a 6th or 7th for him at this point.

    • aub32

Maybe some conditional picks in 2015

  • oreofestar

We turned our 22 into Taylor Hart, Marcus Smith and Jaylen Watkins that is good by me

  • Cam in Eugene

Yeah I’ve just been observing the comments, lot of naysayers in the beginning, this draft is rounding out nicely in my humble opinion

    • cliff henny

not sure you can argue the guys, it might have been slightly early to take each player, like 1/4 or 1/2 rd, this 1 or 2 rounds early stuff is non-sense. either you glass half full it and think, ‘hey, they’re going after targets’ or glass half empty and think ‘reaching’. seems like they are moving around and attacking draft to me

  • Hanibal Luis

Chip – “Andy just took DAT on us” :D

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

      did he really say that?

      • oreofestar

they are saying that on igglesblitz too so I believe so

      • Hanibal Luis

Yeah, then said,”I actually just talked to Andy” leading up to the Hart PC. Listening now.

        • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

awesome thanks for updates. that’s pretty funny. I wouldn’t have minded him as a 5th, especially since we had two. But also pleased with Hart.

I’m betting last 2 picks are either OL, ILB, RB, or DB

          • Hanibal Luis

No worries. So far, this was the best PC. Took a reporter to task about picking Ducks. Mentioned Kiko too.

  • Hanibal Luis

3rd grade on Hart, Howie set up the order of how they would draft today.

  • Hanibal Luis

    T. Smith to JAX

    • oreofestar

Jesus JAX is killing this draft

      • Hanibal Luis

Yes sir. I thought so too.

      • Eagles1018

Yes they are. And we have them week 1. May or may not be the team this year but if they make it work they can be a good team in a couple years

        • oreofestar

yeah week one either get to play Henne or a rookie who will experience growing pains but I can see them as a playoff team in 2 years

        • All Things Bad@ss

Much of that will be hinged on Bortles’ success. But if he pans out? Yup … vastly improved.

  • Hanibal Luis

Talking about the BB trade, Polk is 100%, good STer and the main back up.

  • oreofestar

Cowboys traded up gotta guess they gave up some 2nds

    • cliff henny

good, hope they draft Murray, he’s romo Jr

  • oreofestar

Devin Street for boys I like Abbrederis and Coleman more

    • cliff henny

yeah, he isn’t scaring anyone. nice, pedestrian. avant at best

    • RIP illa

UDFA, L’Damain Washington! Please Howie make it happen.

  • PaoliBulldog

Curious whether Eagles might trade back from 162.

  • cliff henny

Reid took DAT. am soooooo glad Kelly is 100% against midget fastball.

  • oreofestar

LOL somebody has to draft Mccarron right

    • Mikeq

Worth it to have his girlfriend at team functions. At this point in draft that’s what I’d be thinking.

      • Hanibal Luis

        Nah, I hate reality shows.

      • All Things Bad@ss

That chick does nothing for me personally. Kind of like Tannehill’s chick on Hard Knox … just want her to shoo

  • cliff henny

tell ya’ what, other thing we are finding out, Howie and Chip aren’t nearly as concerned over Bamiro, Barbre, TObin Molk and d-Kelly as we all were

    • Adam

I believe they’ve already said that their board was cleaned out quite a bit during a run on o-lineman earlier today. Cards didn’t fall the way they had hoped.

  • Will

How many NT do we have on the roster?

    • Warhound

Good question. Looking at the DL – what seven players make the team and which six do you dress?

    • RIP illa

1 in Bennie and Square (who sucks) has been known to man the spot. Would love for us to finally pick up our ILB and NT, with the last 2 picks.

  • Reasonableeaglefan

Telvin Smith going for a ride on the Gus Bus. I think he becomes a real player in that system.

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

      new Kam?

      • Reasonableeaglefan

Good analogy. I was thinking of when the Seahawks drafted Bruce Irvin. Everyone said he didn’t have a position, then bam, 10 sacks

  • Cam in Eugene

So since this is my first time at a keyboard and I have been wanting to get into this board for a while here it goes.

    1. Marcus Smith: IMO the drop off after him was too great behind him to wait maybe 8 picks. Chip loves raw, he is absolute believer in coaching up a raw athlete. This kid has a really high ceiling.

    2. Jordan Mathews: Again many analysts say polished but I believe there is a lot more toothpaste to put to the silver. This kid is the first big receiver that plays like a big receiver Chip has EVER had in his arsenal. He puts on his big boy NFL weight and watch out.

    3. Josh Huff: Having watched plenty of Oregon football this kid is a beast. The bottom half of his body is that of a WR his torso and arms are that of a RB. He will terrorize secondaries from the slot (where I see him getting the most time). Knows the system and loves the coach.

    4. Jaylen Watkins: Versatility and again raw, tackling concerns but I can’t help but think: “this kid grew up chasing the best receiver in the draft his whole life”.

    5. Taylor Hart: Tough kid came up going against Kyle Long in practice and is reuniting with the coach that made him the football player he is, backup but will start at some point some where.

My humble opinions, I invite response to some of my thoughts…

    • All Things Bad@ss

“this kid grew up chasing the best receiver in the draft his whole life”. — excellent thought.

      • Cam in Eugene

        Thank you.

    • Max Lightfoot

Nice line you’ve written: ” … many analysts say polished but I believe there is a lot more toothpaste to put to the silver.”

      Welcome!

      • Cam in Eugene

        Thank you too.

  • cliff henny

tripp, barrow seastrunk or Jones? or, like usual, not even close, someone else

    • Hanibal Luis

Yep, probably kicker so we can all grown then laugh in unison.

    • Will

      Just not a QB

    • oreofestar

Barrow is gone obviously I want Jones but we won’t so Tripp and Seastrunk are both fine for me

  • oreofestar

I think it is Lache, Skov or Tripp here

  • Hanibal Luis

    Up next.

  • phillylove21

There are going to be so many players undrafted that may turn out to be a great or good contribute to there team..

  • tabu34

    And here. we. go…

  • Warhound

    Tripp or C-strunk

    • oreofestar

      yep I agree

  • Hanibal Luis

    Back-up to Dorenbos please.

    • Warhound

      ha :)

  • Eagles1018

2nd pick in 5th rd is…..Ed Reynolds. Yay

  • oreofestar

    Ed Reynolds

    • oreofestar

Not who I wanted in fact I forgot he was available but decent pick

  • Hanibal Luis

    Ed Reynolds – S

  • Cam in Eugene

    who mocked that one?

  • Hanibal Luis

    Their is your S boys.

  • Andy124

    Championship.

  • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

Called Reynolds earlier. My favorite late-round DB.

    Good find. Good pick

    • RIP illa

What do you like about him? From what little I have seen on him, I’m not too excited or thrilled.

      • All Things Bad@ss

        Wondering the same thing

      • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

again, this is said with the underlying premise that he’s a late-round db
plays the game well, has good enough size and physical skills, decent enough in zone. For such a weak safety draft, I’m glad none went to us before the 5th rd. For me, it was Reynolds or Johnson from nc state

        • RIP illa

          Ok. Makes sense.

        • Andy124

          I kept focussing on Johnson.

    • JofreyRice

yeah, I guess he and Keelan Johnson will be battling it out for that 4th and final safety spot. Should be epic.

      • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

looking for more from late 5th rounder JR? or are you just sobering up and cranky?

        • JofreyRice

was a joke, lighten up dude.

  • oreofestar

I thought Reynolds was going earlier

  • oreofestar

Reynolds is better than Wolff when he came out and has some upside

    • Eagles1018

      Just read his bio:

      Strengths
Good size to contend with tight ends. Reads the quarterback and displays good instincts and anticipation. Showed ballhawking skills as a junior. Functional range off the hash. Wrap tackler. Has NFL bloodlines.
      Weaknesses
Small hands. Very average play speed, twitch and flexibility. Unsudden change of direction. Lacks burst to close suddenly or recover when beat. Occasionally loses field leverage and takes some inaccurate angles. Leaks yards after contact. Misses too many tackles in the open field and can be run over (see Utah). Can be manipulated by quarterbacks. Limited experience in man coverage. Poor leaping ability. Appeared extremely rigid in positional workout at pro day.
      Draft Projection
      Rounds 6-7
      Bottom Line
Big, assignment-sound, Cover-2 safety who brings a dependability factor but lacks ideal athletic ability and physicality. Is the type you look to replace as a starter, but could have longevity as a backup.

      • All Things Bad@ss

Funny, the writeup doesn’t sound promising, but the video within that report paints a vastly different picture. I don’t know this guy but curious now …

  • Hanibal Luis

    Murray to KC.

    • oreofestar

lol Mccarron will go very late Mettenburger undrafted

      • Hanibal Luis

Shocking. Most had ZM in the 3rd and AJ in the 2nd I think.

  • Hanibal Luis

    Chip talking ER now.

  • oreofestar

    AJ lol

    • Eagles1018

I think McCarron starts in about 3 years for Cincy

      • oreofestar

I think Dalton keeps job over AJ as long as money does not become a problem

  • Hanibal Luis

    AJ to Cincy.

  • oreofestar

Spurill went before Jones no way it is not drug stuff and really bad too

  • DAS

Anybody else interested in Lache Seastrunk?

    • oreofestar

I am but I doubt he is lasting another 75 picks

  • Hanibal Luis

    Powell to NO.

    • Andy124

      Damn

    • Andy124

      With the Sproles pick.

  • Hanibal Luis

    Tripp to MIA

    • Eagles1018

      :-(

    • Eagles1018

They have d Jordan and Tripp. 2 player trade straight up? Graham and Curry?

  • oreofestar

Kelly: Jordan Matthews broke down 4 of Eagles’ games on film, came to official visit with notes, questions for coaches.

    DAMN

    • JofreyRice

yeah, he sounds like a legit worker.

      • oreofestar

This kid has the dedication and the upside to be one of the best wrs in the league in a couple years

        • JofreyRice

I hope so. I think he has a chance to be an Eric Decker type, eventually. Glad to have another big WR in the mix.

          • oreofestar

I think this kidcan be much better than Decer he may end up being Thomas hard to find a comparison I will callhim Bowe

          • Eagles1018

Campanaro? In the vein of a Wes Welker type of slot guy

          • JofreyRice

I’d bring him in for a shot, at least. Better than Maehl, for sure.

  • Andy124

    John Urschel!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Harpy Eagle

      Did I do that……

      • Eagles1018

Always think the same thing lol

  • oreofestar

    Dang VIKES

      • Eagles1018

  • Pennguino

    DT Beau Allen

  • JAMIN67

Overall, pretty happy with this draft, at least from what we know and the potential that’s there. As always, only time will tell. Now I hope the Eagles are burning up the phone lines getting some quality undrafted players….

  • Doctor Jay

    Sam, the newest ram rod!
