Wednesday: Free Agency Open Thread

NFL: New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys

On Tuesday, we got some requests to list the newest items at the top of the thread, so we’ll give that a shot today.

As you know by now, we’ll keep this post updated all day long with the latest free agency buzz.

8:28: Darrelle Revis will not be coming to Philadelphia. He signed a one-year, $12 million deal to join the New England Patriots, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

5:42: Looks like Mike Neal has re-signed with the Packers. We were told that the Eagles were showing some interest early on. -- TM

5:33: Take a potential DB target off the board:

5:27: Reuben Frank of CSN Philly says Revis to the Eagles is "not going to happen."

4:08: Here we go...

3:50: The Patriots have released Isaac Sopoaga. I still can't believe Chip Kelly got snookered on that mid-season trade. I really think the Eagles would have won the Super Bowl had they kept Sopoaga. --SK

3:46: It's official. Darrelle Revis is a free agent. The Bucs released the cornerback, and he is now available to sign wherever he wants. As noted below, the Eagles were reportedly one of the teams that called. Howie Roseman has warned against expecting a big splash, but does the organization consider Revis an exception? --SK

2:02: I thought Ware might have made sense for the Eagles at the right price. But this would exceed "right price" guidelines.

It's fair to say the whole "all-in" thing applies to the 2014 Denver Broncos. --SK

1:55: Checking in on former Eagles...

12:43: One guy I thought the Eagles might look at for defensive line depth. They have not been linked to him yet though:

11:33: Another report linking the Eagles with Darrelle Revis.

Who has called the #Bucs about Darrelle Revis? Who hasn’t? Some of them: #Patriots#Falcons#Eagles#Giants. But would any trade for him?

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 12, 2014

11:27: Another special teams pick-up for the Eagles. They signed former Texans linebacker OLB Bryan Braman two a two-year deal that reportedly includes $1 million guaranteed. A Pro Bowl alternate two years ago. He is 6-5, 241. Big people. -- TM

9:01: The Broncos gave Aqib Talib $26M guaranteed yesterday, which almost certainly means they are moving on from Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie:

8:56: I had defensive lineman Al Woods (6-4, 307) on my list of potential depth options for the Eagles. Woods has played in the Steelers' scheme, which is similar to what Billy Davis runs. He's drawing interest from the Titans, according to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean. Another DL depth option, Tony McDaniel, is in talks to stay in Seattle, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. --SK

8:55: There was some buzz yesterday that the Eagles could be a player for DeMarcus Ware, but John Elway might not let him get out of town.

  • HazyEagle

first! haha. Lets make it another solid day!

  • Rahkem

sigh , another day of dissapointment incmoming lol

    • Corey

right you are. Howie doesn’t like looking through the bottom of the barrel, he likes turning the barrel over and looking through the mud under the barrel. Love the guy, just feel like hating.

  • http://batman-news.com andy

i really feel like we are at times too quick to bash the birds for not signing this guy or that…last year no splashy names but SOLID players…we need SOLID players to build out team again….it’s a deep draft where we can get some SPLASH! IF AND ONLY IF foles does not regress and shady and o-line stay healthy we can compete….would love to see upgraded pass rush tho

    • jabostick

It was hard to take yesterday because a lot of signs pointed to Byrd coming to Philly (and we ratcheted up the expectation in the comments) but if we signed him at that deal, I’m sure the outrage would’ve been worse.

Can’t grade their offseason after half a day. Chip and Howie don’t strike me as guys who don’t think through every permutation of their approach so I’m giving them every benefit of the doubt

      • Joe from Easton

        Thank you.

Maybe the knee jerk reactions will subside and people will realize that 48 hours ago we all trusted Chip and Howie. So they didn’t get a high-priced free agent that a lot of us arm chair GM’s wanted; whoopdie-doo. Chip isn’t any less the coach he was last year and Howie has us in a position still to get someone if we want or have a solid draft and pay our talent next year.

If you take the top five players from the twelve playoff teams last year, only five of 60 players were acquired by their team through free agency. One was Brees and one was Manning. Translation; win through the draft. Chip, Gamble, and Howie are building a team the right way.

        • Sean

Heard a stat yesterday if you took the top 60 guys in the league in a given year, an average of 10 out of 60 are acquired via FA.

          • Joe from Easton

That’s fine, but what teams do most of them play for? Not playoff teams obviously, or my stat wouldn’t be correct. The packers don’t do sh!t in free agency. The patriots rarely do. San Fran and Seattle built up with home-grown talent… See the trend?

          • Joe from Easton

            p.s.

I don’t know if you were disputing my stat or not. Didn’t mean to come off as confrontational.

          • Sean

Nah I am with you! 10 out of 60 – meaning 16% chance that that FA will have a major impact league wide… And I know more than 16% of FA’s get overpaid.

  • Sean

Denver is just dream team 2.0… I don’t remember the last time a team won a Superbowl in FA. You win in the DRAFT.

Usually it’s the established teams that are quiet on the FA front, and the more desperate franchise trying to take too big of a jump that make more noise anyway. (Eagles coming off first rd loss then Dream team 1.0 happened, AR desperate that offseason) I’d like to consider the eagles of this off-season the former.

    • Token

Denver was stacked before these moves. Eh, nevermind. Eagles fans……..

      • Sean

I recall the Eagles were still pretty stacked after the close loss to Green Bay the year they won the super bowl even before the dream team signings.. Constant ebb & flow for all teams in the NFL

        • Token

You think they were stacked? They shouldnt have even made the playoffs.

          • Sean

Vick played out of his mind that year & led them to playoffs… they were a game away from a first round bye!

          • Uncle Wonder

            Joe Webb, smh

      • Niels

No “stacked” team should lose by 35 points in the SB. Seattle is is great team, but not that great. Denver needs to go all in for the last 2 (max) years of Peyton before they head back into QB purgatory. Good luck to them on that.

        • Token

Yes yes. Denver sucks. Eagles rule. I get it.

    • Ark87

2 types of teams go nuts in FA. Bad franchises with a ton of holes to fill and money to spend. And teams just so tantalizingly close to winning the superbowl. FA is the most likely way to address those holes this year, as opposed to the draft, which is future minded.

Manning is no spring chicken, Denver realizes this could be their last hurrah. They’re all in. We can still afford to be patient, they can’t.

      • Sean

Birds did that coming off VIck’s amazing year, when a Superbowl was feasible with an aging vick…
I am just glad the eagles have almost fully recovered from that disaster.

  • Rahkem

I hope we make a few solid moves , BJ Raji is out there , Henry Melton ? MAYBE he could make the transition to a 5 Technique in a 3-4 (wishful thinking lol) . Brandon Browner? Should be in our price range lol

If we signed Chris Clemons to a short term deal and maybe took a shot on a CB like Chris Cook id be happy

  • Mike2

Jenkins played several years for Saints defense, which was one of the worst defenses in NFL history. Jenkins lost his job last year to rookie Vaccaro. Now Saints dump Jenkins, and upgrade tremendously to Byrd……..and Eagles sign Saints reject Jenkins.

    • Rahkem

actuallly roman harper lost his job to vacarro not jenkins

    • UKEagle99

Jenkins played WITH Vaccaro, Bush replaced Vaccaro when he went down with an injury and they liked what they saw and decided to let Jenkins walk. They now have Byrd & Vaccaro as their starters and a decent backup.

      • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

maybe no backup. Bush pry won’t last, they’re out of money. 1 of those two S goes down, they’re starting scrubs. Maybe they sign Kurt for depth.

        • DEBO 215

They signed some white guy backup S from Seattle yesterday…I’ve never heard of him.

    • Sean

Didn’t he make a clutch stop/tackle against eagles this year in playoffs on 3rd down late in the game?

  • Brian

Signed Chris Maragos from Seattle. Colt Anderson’s replacement.

    • Nfl All Day

Called that a month ago. Where you at Geagle I’m coming for the belt!

      • GEAGLE

Bring it….I welcome more posters who have a friggin clue about eagles reality.nwithout it, I’m stuck having the media waste our damn time talking about signing the worst tackling safety or giving 35milliom to add to a DL rotation…I’m sorry, but if you are a media member like Mosher and you wasted this fanbase time talking about adding Lammarr Houston then you are a clueless joke..and we are talking about one of my favorite young players in the NFL…

Like, it should NOT take til the day before free agency, for the media to suddenly realize that we would have some level of interest in Corey Graham…l.

If you are a media member and you thought we were adding Obrien Schofiedl, then you are a fool….we had one stinking OLB on the roster last year, and we had like 3 different chances to claim Schofield on waivers and we passed him every time..HELLO we had priority over the Seahawks in the waiver wire order. We could have claimed him for dirt cheap and Cut Casey Mathews like 3 times, yet media has the audacity to think we may try to sign him on the open market? Wtf?? These aren’t special observations or top secret intel…I’m amazed at how bad the media is at connecting the simple, logical dots
        ..
We need as many quality posters as we can get, who actually are tapped into reality, because if not the media will turn us into a legion of brainless white walkers

  • Joe Thomas

Come on Howie, do something to breathe the life back into the fan base.

  • Token

There are the Denvers of the NFL and then there are the Eagles. Some teams are serious and some are not. Hell the Saints now have a top 2 safety tandem in the NFL and people act like they are stupid because they had to release old declining guys like Sproles to make it happen. They are trying to win a title while Brees is still around.

As a GM if you live in fear of past mistakes or fear of failure then you will fail.

    • Adam G

You mean like the Eagles in 2011?

      • Sean

        see my comment below

      • Token

Even fans live in fear now? The FA class of last year was worse than the Dream Team class.

        • JReamer

          Based on what? Patrick Chung?

        • Adam G

It’s not fear, its reality. What was the last Super Bowl winning team that “won” free agency?

          • Token

I think the Seahawks did pretty well last year.

          • Adam G

How did they win free agency? Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Russell Wilson. Come on. They won with mid level signings in FA and great drafting.

          • Uncle Wonder

What did they do besides get Harvin and Bennett? Neither of those were viewed as big time pickups at the time.

          • James Hathaway

Harvin was a trade, not a free agent signing.

          • Uncle Wonder

True, but in the NFL its same difference…they made the trade then signed him to a brand new deal.

          • GreenScabs

Cliff Avril as well. That’s three top tier players in the span of one week.

          • Niels

Dude, you sure sound like a troll. Denver is one missed assignment on the OL from being a mediocre team and even if that is avoided have 1-2 years of Peyton before falling off. Seattle was smart with with FA and lucky (limited suspensions for substance violations that could have been much worse) which put them in a position to win. The Eagles are imo one more year of development away from being a true SB contender and can lock up (this year) Foles, etc. for years to come with their cap space. This is a good plan for a team whose window is longer than 12 months.

        • James Hathaway

In what way was last year’s free agent group worse than the Dream Team? They whiffed on two. Casey and Chung. They nailed it on Barwin, Fletcher, and Williams. Also brought in Barbre, who looked fantastic and has huge upside. I’m in love with last year’s free agent group. Fill out your roster with solid contributors, draft your studs.

          • Token

Yea, about that draft studs part. When does that happen? Id like that.

          • Adam G

So would everybody, but that’s a prerequisite to winning the Super Bowl

    • Ark87

Not so much serious vs not serious, more like desperate and patient. The Broncos and the Saints need to take a few last shots. Their windows are closing. We are still building our team. Different stages.

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

helps when you have two old HOF QBs on their last legs. They have no problem mortgaging their future. Of course, for someone shortsighted, I can see how you’re tickled with envy.

      • Token

If they win a title does it matter? How do people think in such a losery way? Mortgage their future to win a SB? Who the F cares? And its not like they forfeit all draft picks. They still have the ability to bring in young talent.

        • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

until they don’t win. and they’re screwed.
If Foles was 35 and played like them for a decade, sure. But I get that you like to compare every team in a vacuum. So I’m just going to stop wasting my keystrokes.

        • FMWarner

The difference is that the Eagles would forfeit several years of contending if it blew up in their faces 2011-style. The Broncos are only forfeiting one, mayyyybe two. Once Peyton is done, they’re screwed anyway. Their downside is a hell of a lot less.

    • JofreyRice

I’m right there with you in disappointment today, but it is a little different for Denver or the Saints. Older QBs really do present a “window” to win.

  • Don

Ware will not make it in Denver. Air is to thin for older players I know I lived there for 13 years. He will be good for about 1/2 a game .If he signs for more than a year Elway is dumb

  • Clamdigger

DeMarcus Ware will totally help Peyton stop being terrible in loud playoff games against good defenses.

  • Nfl All Day

Some might scoff at this suggestion, but let’s go take Jon Beason from the Giants and see if he can challenge Meco for the ILB Job. He had 2 injury plagued seasons in the middle of 5 GREAT ones. Before that dude was a beast, until the injuries and Luke Kuechly came to derail what was an AllPro career. It could be an upgrade if he takes the job. 100 tackles in 15 games indicate to me he’s back on track

    • DEBO 215

He was flat out filthy his first couple years in the league.

  • DEBO 215

Does Denver run a 3-4? I thought they were a 4-3 front…I could be wrong on that…I think Ware would be a good fit back in a 3-4 scheme…He didn’t fit in Monte Kiffins 4-3, Tampa 2…

    • Corey

Denver doesn’t care. Just going after shiny things.

      • DEBO 215

        This is also true.

      • Harpy Eagle

        Denver – Dram Team 2014

    • Clamdigger

John Fox switched them to a 4-3.

      • DEBO 215

That’s what I thought, but I wasn’t sure. He’s so much better when he doesn’t have his hand in the dirt…I don’t know why he’d go to a 4-3 team.

        • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

chasing ring and money. oh, and im sure legalized pot helps too
Lurie, get this going through state legislature ASAP!

          • DEBO 215

            Damn straight!

  • Joe Thomas

On the bright side, Coleman and Chung are gone. Hopefully Jenkins is this years Barwin. Now get us a 3-4 linebacker, and Graham.

  • Corey

I would love to see them get Rafeal Bush from cap strapped NO, and maybe Corey Graham too. I also think it’s time we find a way to dump Brandon Graham, waste of a roster spot.

  • DEBO 215

I’m fine with Jenkins. Byrd has two bad feet and I was leery of paying him a lot. I really wanted Ward but Jenkins is absolutely an upgrade over what they had. I’d still love to see them draft a safety. Pryor might not be on the board, but with Jenkins being a good cover safety, they could take a run at Clinton-Dix if he is there since he is more of a banger.

I hope they’re taking a long look at Ware and Woodley today.

    • Token

Im curious, where did this notion that Jenkins is good in coverage come from? Stop parroting what stupid people say. The guy is consistently not good in coverage.

      • DEBO 215

He’s better then Chung/Allen/Coleman or anything else they had…

      • Corey

Yeah, but look how new and shiny he is :)

      • DEBO 215

Ray Diddinger loves the kid apparently so I’m on board…

        • Token

Ray Didi loves a lot of crappy players. Jaquain Jarrett comes to mind.

          • DEBO 215

Jarrett was awful. Such a reach. That’s what happens when you don’t draft BPA…

      • DEBO 215
  • morgan c

Can someone please explain how the Saints paid 9 mil a year to Byrd? I’m not even mad, I’m impressed!
No, but seriously, how were they physically able to do that with all their cap issues?

    • DEBO 215

I think they’re over the cap right now but they’re going to trade Sproles today.

    • UKEagle99

Large signing bonus pro rated over 5 years helped, $5m against the cap year 1, rising.

      • NickS1

Exactly, the structure of this deal guarantees he’s there longer and sees more of the money in the contract. For all we know, Ahab offered his white whale the exact same thing, but Howie’s contract has him out in 3yrs if needed, with little dead money relative to the contract.

    • Ark87

      up vote for the reference

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

they’re praying he stays healthy and talented, or they’re eating money in a few years.

      • Eagles4Life

If it helped garner a Super Bowl, I’d be fine with eating that cash on the back end. Is that not the end game?

        • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

1/32 chance. just a certain philosophy to bet the house. I understand it. don’t like it myself

    • JofreyRice

The guys they pay to manage their cap are a lot more clever than we are at managing the cap?

      • Joe from Easton

and by clever you mean they’re willing to screw themselves in two years in the hopes of winning now? The saints are a different team than the Eagles right now. They’re going for broke with a QB that’s getting older and is paid already. The Eagles are trying to build for a career of Foles.

I’m not saying that one way is right or wrong, but I understand what they’re doing.

        • JofreyRice

No, by clever I mean they have a better understanding of the intricacies of the salary cap, the specifics of the contracts on their team, and the overall trajectory of how the league will set the cap in the future. I think people are fooling themselves to think that every team that makes big moves is pissing all over their future. There is only one Jerry Jones.

I think if you’re going to eliminate free agency as an avenue for bringing in talented players (that actually cost big $$$), you’re sabotaging your ability to build the team. There are a lot of ways to skin a cat, but at the end of the day, you need talented players. If you shut down free agency as a source, then you better be able to draft your ass off and bring in studs. Howie’s done a better job lately, I credit him for that, but I’m not sure I’m confident he’s the next Ted Thompson, yet.

          • NickS1

            100% agree.

          • Joe from Easton

Look no further than San Fran. The architect of that team now sits in Philly’s front office. Green Bay doesn’t touch free agents.

I’m not suggesting you eliminate free agency as a means of obtaining talent, but getting fleeced is a different story. Free agency typically allows players that aren’t quite worth what they’re getting to get it anyway because teams are desperate. I’m glad the Eagles aren’t acting desperate.

The amount of money that the saints have locked into Byrd is going to hurt them when it comes time to keep their offense stocked up. When you’re robbing peter to pay paul it comes out it in the wash eventually.

          • JofreyRice

Look at the contract they gave Jenkins. It’s a contract that says “We’re not sure about you”. Tip of the hat, Haunted Howie has been true to his word. Aim low in free agency, and miss low, if you’re going to miss at all. Don’t commit. Be ready to back out of these contracts at any moment, and hope for someone to surprise you. That’s more than just avoiding getting fleeced, that’s saying “We refuse to pay talent the going rate”.

Like I said, Green Bay is Green Bay. You have to hope that Howie is the next Ted Thompson, if this is going to be the strategy. He hasn’t been so far. He’s been better than Reid’s awful drafts, but that’s like measuring the strength of the Jenkins signing by how shitty Patrick Chung played. We’re talking about competing with other teams, not with the past versions of our own team.

Would you say that Seattle was “acting desperate” by paying one year rental fees to Mike Bennett and Cliff Avril, as well as trading and signing Percy Harvin to a huge contract? I wouldn’t. I’d say they saw a deficiency and addressed it seriously. They have shown they can draft talented players, and have a young QB, but still chose to add those players because it helped the team.

          • jabostick

I agree with a healthy amount of that, the only caveat I’d include is that we don’t know how much roster churning Kelly (and Billy Davis) have in mind. They mightn’t view this year as “we need to plug a couple of holes; let’s pay for it if need be”.

The other thing is that Seattle hit a couple draft home runs so they can do things like make that big Harvin deal (which has essentially bombed so far but hasn’t hurt them).

          • JofreyRice

Didn’t Harvin help them win the Superbowl?

          • jabostick

Yeah but they traded a 1st and 3rd (or whatever) plus a big contract despite him being an injury risk and then he was injured the entire season. Came back in the playoffs and got concussed. Don’t know that the ends justify the means there, unless he can be available and productive going forward.

          • JofreyRice

Jeez, he literally helped them win the Super Bowl. If those ends aren’t enough maybe I need to do my homework on the NFL.

          • Joe from Easton

I see where you’re coming from.

The thing to consider is we all want the same thing as fans. I guess I’m just hoping that Howie ‘n company know what they’re doing. Maybe I’m being a bit naive.

The only thing I know for sure we went from 4-12 to 10-6 under this regime in one year. I believe in the plan they’ve set forth. Only time will tell though.

I respect your opinions; well thought and valid. The short of it is simply go Eagles. Bring one home for all of us.

          • JofreyRice

No, I do think there is reason to be hopeful. I’m probably just not there yet. Howie improved the draft haul tremendously in ’12 and ’13, at least in terms of solid players, if not studs. I’m totally on board with Chip, have a lot of confidence in him as a coach. Hopefully they will knock it out of the park in May.

          • GEAGLE

Spot on…you don’t get too many opportunities to improve your team, so not taking advantage of FA IMO is a mistake…I would never suggest we give a safety the contract Byrd got. But considering how much pass rushers cost. We blew an opportunity to be set at OLB by not giving MJ the fair offer he signed..
            .
MJ across from Barwin would make us POTENT and give us more flexibility in draft…missing out pn an opportunity to improve, is always a mistake…
            ..
            Ware,visiting Broncos
            ..
            Woodley and tuck visiting Oakland..
            ..
            Any word on Peppers?

          • UKEagle99

I need to make a decision on Peppers. I have a red, green & orange in my fridge and am cooking the family Fajitas tonight. I can only really use 2 or it throws it out of whack, which two?

The Saints are in a different place to us right now and are rolling the dice. Is there an argument for what they are doing, sure but it isn’t sustainable UNLESS they draft like a team possessed. They have a 36 year old QB, their biggest playmaker on O is disgruntled (for now), their O Line is only helped by Brees getting the ball out quickly. They are limited, effective but limited. I would much rather be where we are.I am over Byrd not signing but 100% agree with your other points, we need to have a plan to bring in another potential starter at safety and we need to upgrade our pass rush, even if it is only a 3rd down specialist and we need to do this without watering down what we can do in the draft.

          • GEAGLE

Would you trade our entire roster for the saints entire roster? I wouldn’t…I sure as hell wouldn’t want to trade salary cap situations with them….sure they just signed one of my fav players, and I would love to get Jimmy…but at what cost? They are losing some quality football players who have some juice left in the tank
Like Sproles and will smith…..don’t know how happy I would be to add Byrd if it meant losing Ced or Cox

          • UKEagle99

I wouldn’t trade rosters at all, I don’t agree with what they are doing, at all. They have no-one behind Brees (I think their backup QB they had to sign to the active roster off of the practice squad as they thought he might get signed away), Brees is their window so I can understand why they are doing what they are doing. Personally I think it will suck to be a Saints fan in a couple of years time UNLESS they hit on the vast majority of their picks.

If i am Jimmy Graham I am seriously pissed that I am fighting tooth and nail to get paid after producing for this team and they go and bring in JB and make him one the highest paid safety’s ever!

          • aub32

The same can be said about every franchise. Every team will eventually be hurt if they do not hit on their draft picks. Teams that have the talent to make the playoffs should do what they can to make a run. There’s too much uncertainty to think any window will be open for long.

          • aub32

That would not have been the case though. I agree they paid a hefty price for Byrd, but say the gamble works out. Let’s say Byrd is a really good to great safety over the next 4-5 years. With our current cap situation, we would not have been in danger of losing any of our young guys going forward. I doubt Cox gets an extension next year. Boykin and Kendricks will not cost big money relative to their position. So I don’t see the point you are making because we have a very different cap situation than the Saints.

          • Eagles4Life

THANK YOU. People keep clamoring as if we’re about to be shelling out top dollar contracts to the entire 2012 Draft class. Sipping the Kool aid. Smh.

          • woody7236

You buy low and sell high. Most Eagles fans want to buy high. You sign players who will BECOME pro-bowlers, and you stay away from pro-bowlers who want big contracts. Most times they under perform and you over pay.

          • woody7236

Fantasy football is in no way like real football BUT if you always draft based on last years stats you will lose. Last years stats do not correlate to the next years performance. Paying for past performance will NOT guarantee future results.

          • JofreyRice

Nah, the guys you sign in FA are finished products. You get what you pay for.

        • GEAGLE

They may not have to wait two years to screw themselves…I get why broncos are making moves that get them over the top???but saints seem stupid to me! they are making moves to get them over the top! but to make those moves! they are blowing up their entire team, while continuing to sour their relationship with Jimmy Graham….broncos are adding pieces but they aren’t cutting half their team to do it…..I adore Jarius Byrd! but if I’m a saints fan, I don’t know how happy I am, by what’s going on in New orleans

          • jabostick

AFC also looks ripe for the taking right now. Makes sense for the Broncos to go all in The NFC, though? It is stacked

          • oreofestar

Unless they have a dream team like collapse I do not see any team that can touch them in the AFC

          • jabostick

Yep. All sorts of thing can (and usually do) happen over the course of the season but at least they’re the clear cut favourites. Saints are still nowhere near consensus best in the NFC

          • oreofestar

True that but Denver is sooo much better than every other AFC team right now, NE just lost their best defensive player and Edelman is on the way out, Cincy can not be taken seriously as long as Dalton is QB, SD is OK, KC is not that great and Indy is up there but not close to Denver

          • JofreyRice

yeah, and KC lost like 3/5ths of their offensive line this year. Asomoah, Schwartz (who I was hoping the Eagles would sign, to compete with Herremans), Albert. Andy’s making his mark on that team.

          • Ark87

Jimmy would look mighty fine in green, Eh? Him and Ertz…I have to go change my shorts…

          • oreofestar

That would be great I would support it lol just to piss the Saints off and Jimmy takes less to go to PHILLY LOL dangerous

          • GEAGLE

If we gave FOles and Chip, Jimmy and Ertz…scary

          • oreofestar

That is when I have no problem with trading DJAX lol until Jummi Graham though nope

    • mk

The latest reports have the cap projected to go up $30 million over the next two years. Given that increase, talk of “salary cap hell” is bluster. Even without an increase there are so many ways to structure a deal to avoid exceeding the cap that a team like New Orleans can do what it just did.
And if people think some of the contracts this year are outrageous, just wait until even more teams have $ over the next couple years. This was a year to get while the getting was good. Even teams like the Cowboys will likely have money to sign FAs in a couple years.
For the Eagles, given the projected increase in the cap and the money they will have coming off the books, any talk of needing to save money to resign their young players is specious. Even if their approach is solid, that excuse given by Howie doesn’t hold up anymore.

      • Dominik

With the salary cap increasing etc. you sure have a solid argument. I would only counter with: let’s see if the Saints can sign Graham to a long term contract. If they are not able to do that, they didn’t make the right call. Graham is a special player and comes from in-house. A good franchise keeps special players from in-house.

We’ll see how things play out. Howies big concern, obviously, is to keep EVERY player he wants to keep. If he can do that while the Saints have to let a special player like Graham walk, he has the better philosophy (imho). If not, you are right.

On the other hand: Howie is a cap genius. Even his critics can’t blame him for the cap management. If he has a problem, it’s talent evaluation. So I sure hope he will play with the increasing cap and make the Eagles to a contender. The sooner, the better.

        • southy

While some people think otherwise, Howie isn’t an idiot. He knows how much he can spend this year, and in the next few years, and he’s got Gamble and Chipper on board with a long term plan. He knows it’s a team game and the whole thing can be ruined by going after mercenaries with inflated prices that don’t fit what you’re trying to build.

I’m happy to watch how this thing plays out for them over an entire offseason.

      • Nfl All Day

Agree/Disagree. While this was a great year to grab some guys, safety in particular. Going forward you may have more teams with the ability to lock up their guys with the cap increase, or willing to franchise them with the added dough. Either scenario creating a dearth of available free agents. But yeah, this money gonna get duuumb!

  • Nfl All Day

“I know THE SECOND I sign DRC to a long term deal he’s gonna flip the switch and turn back into a lazy asshole. Somebody call Taib’s agent” said Elway……..good for you John.

  • Nfl All Day

I cant remeber, did Sprole break the last punt return down the Birds sideline? Curious if Chip has a lasting image of him starting the dagger before Drew finished it off. He might of turned and gave him finger or something.

  • UKEagle99

We discussed on here a few days ago ‘walk away numbers’ I believe the highest I saw was $26m guaranteed, he signed for $28m and will be affecting the Saints cap until 2018. Hopefully for them he stays healthy and doesn’t lose the speed he has. Bearing in mind we’d A) Have to outbid them and B) He probably views them as more of a contender than us. Saints are in win now mode, hard to outbid teams with that mentality.

I’m OK with the fact we didn’t get him, ish happens but we need another safety without compromising the draft and we need a get a better rush from somewhere.

    • NickS1

I’m slowly getting there. I’ll still refer to Howie as Ahab until he finds more than a stop-gap. Hope Jenkins pans out and gets better, here.

  • Token

OK, super happy fun time. What can we do to improve from here…..

Revis will be released today. They arent spending on anything else, may as well pay the man his money. I would sign him. Keep Fletch as a #4 for this year. Still draft a rookie. So that could help out with what they are able to do defensively.

Unless I missed it Seattles kicker is still available right? Why? Get him in here. Cut that damn bum Henery. Actually no, keep Alex and cut him during final cuts so he has less of a chance to find another job.

That does it for FA. Maybe some depth guys they can find that are better than all time great bums like Casey matthews.

Then in the draft they have the task of getting a legit pass rusher. They may have put themselves in a position to have to trade up a few picks. If Barr or Ford drop into that 15-18 range…… Get a rookie CB at some point. Another WR high.

    • Uncle Wonder

Considering we have no safeties why dont we sign Revis and move CW inside?

      • DEBO 215

I think Boykin would stay in the slot and Fletcher would probably just move to the bench for depth.

        • Uncle Wonder

When i say inside i mean safety

  • Corey

Wonder if Howie is working on another late round pick for player trade. Are their any players that are worth trading for, that would fit the scheme?

    • GEAGLE

Jabaal Sheard from the browns(edge rusher from Pitt) but he is entering a contract year so I would have prefered trading for him last year..Darren Sproles is also someone I could see us trading for

  • Nick M

I remember reading somewhere last year that Billy Davis said “with the way we play defense, you should never here from our safeties” I am not a defensive guru but it seems like that in this scheme spending big money on a safety is pointless since you can get away with having decent safeties (you don’t need stars). It is just about how pieces fit and from what it seems, this guy fits well.

    • DEBO 215

If that’s the case, they really need to upgrade their pass rush.

      • Brian

        Exactly.

      • Ark87

absolutely agree. I get the feeling we wanted Griffith pretty bad. This is looking like a difficult task this year.

      • Nick M

I agree. I think they draft a guy but would also like to see them sign a Rob Jackson type guy. The hope is the drafted rookie pushed Cole for playing time but if he doesn’t then you don’t want Trent Cole playing every snap. A young veteran like Jackson would be a good fit/insurance. Could also give Barwin a blow as well. There really doesn’t seem to be much out there right now.

        • DEBO 215

There’s more out there then in the draft. The OLB/DE department is thin this year (after the top guys that is). I’d like them to take a look at Ware and Lamar Woodley.
I’m really warming up to the Dion Jordan trade rumors from a month or so ago and at this point would be willing to part with the 22nd pick for him.

      • Nick M

and glad they didn’t give a guy with 1 sack and 8 tackles 8 million dollars like the Giants did. #idiots

        • DEBO 215

          agreed

        • UKEagle99

I think it was a great move by them and I applaud them. More of the same please ;)

      • UKEagle99

Billy D wants 2 safeties that are interchangeable. Which is coming, which is dropping, are the both coming, both dropping?

We absolutely positively need to upgrade the pass rush. Not many options out there, including the draft at 22. I’d hate to be giving up picks in this draft to be moving up.

        • DEBO 215

Agreed. I don’t want to sacrifice picks to move up. The only trade I’d be interested in would be for Dion Jordan.

        • Eagles4Life

I get that frame of mind, but we did nothing to improve it lol. Now we are looking at scraps.

          • UKEagle99

We need Nate back, I’m sorry to say…

          • Eagles4Life

Man, I’m actually all abroad bringing him back. What a wash.

    • Nick M

hear…sorry, didn’t proof read before posting.

  • Nfl All Day

Id really like James Ihedigbo now at the strong. Affordable and a true tackler. Numbers in run support some of the best in the league.

    • Joe Thomas

That would be a good pick up

    • Stuart Philp

I’d be comfortable with Jenkins and Ihedigbo as our starters. Make it happen!

    • oreofestar

I think he is a little too old isn’t he like 30

      • Nfl All Day

I hear he was open to a short deal and the guy is built like T.O. He can go hard for a while yet. He’s not declining. Low mileage. And cheap. Prob similar deal to Jenkins.

        • cliff henny

not a ton of wear on the tires either. not all 30′s are the same. seems like kelly/davis are pretty set at this L/R not SS/FS, though.

          • Eagles4Life

They’re taking this versatility thing to the grave, it would seem. I’m going to wait and see, but the thought has crossed my mind that we need a few masters of specific things…too many jack of all trades characters on defense.

          • cliff henny

least they are staying consistant. drafting and signing similar. dont have to look too far in our division to see what happens when talent is amassed, but more randomly (dallas and wash). i’ll at least commend the focus

          • Eagles4Life

Well, you definitely want to have a purpose, but you’d think our lack of front four pressure would have given them some sort of jolt to bring in someone we know can contribute right away…and yet, crickets.

  • GEAGLE

Crap!! Niners interested in Vikings CB, Chris Cook….we have to get that kid. he has incredible talent and physical ability for our teachers to coach up…I desperately want to see him replace Curtis marsh on the roster.
    ..
If anyone hears anything about Corey Graham, Alex Carrington or Al woods, please let me know..
…frggin Les Bowan is suggesting Brandon Spikes? Lol

    • oreofestar

I am scared that Ware joins the Broncos dream team lol I hope they end up like the dream team

      • Corey

Less likely on teams with a DC who knows what he is doing. Though there is always the chance that the pieces don’t fit together.

        • oreofestar

Ware does not fit what they got there and they are pissing me off

      • GEAGLE

If there Is going to be a dream team, keep it in the AFC

        • oreofestar

But I want Ware why can’t they just take Tuck or Allen Jeez…

    • Uncle Wonder

Why no love for Jared Allen? He is same age as Ware, way younger than Peppers. Pretty much just as effective as a pass rusher

      • George

        no 34 exp. for allen

        • Uncle Wonder

How much exp for Peppers? i see his name thrown around

        • Ark87

I’m def. intrigued by Ware, he dipped off, but it was also year 1 in a 4-3. I wonder if he has anything left in the tank with a switch for a 3-4

          • George

Thats what Im hoping for aswell

          • pjcostello

He played hurt much of the year, and was miscast in a 4-3 (IMHO).

      • oreofestar

        DE

      • GEAGLE

I view Micheal jOhnson and Everson Griffin as 4-3DEs who can flourish at OLB…I view Jared as strictly a 4-3DE

        • oreofestar

The Broncos can not possibly get Ware right? Unless he takes a ton less just cuz they are assembling a dream team

          • anon

denver actually has lots of cap space.

          • oreofestar

They just blew 17mil on Caldwell, Talib and Ward yesterday and still have J.Thomas and D.Thomas extensions to give they currently have like 10mil between extensions and draft picks I do not know where the fit Ware in

          • GEAGLE

They are also trying to sign Jon Beason away from giants

          • oreofestar

Yo Elway needs to calm his nips unless he does not Want Thomas, Thomas, Welker, Knighton, Miller and everyone else to resign

          • GEAGLE

I’d be happy to take Thomas or Potroast off them..

Jocoby Jon’s visiting the Giants..wouldn’t mind Howie stealing him lol

          • oreofestar

Hopefully Broncos get Beason and we get Ware I think he will be motivated as hell as destroy for us

  • Joe Thomas

Where is our all 22 for Maragos?

    • Nfl All Day

He had 3 tackles on Def. Thats an ALL 2 breakdown. Its a good SpTeam grab tho.

    • Eagles4Life

      Lolololololololololololol

  • oreofestar

The Broncos are pissing me off!!! I want Ware!!!

    • Uncle Wonder

OMG, get a hold of yourself, homie…you sound like a 5yr old.

      • oreofestar

        I know!!!! lol

    • GEAGLE

They targeting in beason as well…they ain’t F’ing around trying to build that defense

      • Nfl All Day

I’ll take Beason and let him compete right here. But, that’d be too proactive.

    • cliff henny

the fall in ’16 is going to be rough out there though.

  • oreofestar

I want Ware really bad, him or Revis if we get one then FA was not a failure completely if we do not then it may well be all we have dome is locked up Jones, overpaid Jenkins and essentially resigned Colt Anderson

    • anon

no way we’re paying $12mm/yr for revis

      • Nfl All Day

        You better hope not.

      • oreofestar

I agree but I will hope he takes less, I mean there is Cleveland but does he want to play there? NE can’t afford him IDK who is the best landing spot

        • George

Ive heard he might want to go back to the jets

          • anon

they have tons of cap space probably why.

    • Nfl All Day

Ware is almost a lock in Denver. Schefter had some telling tweets from execs in the afc west.

  • GEAGLE

An OLB name that Howie could have his eye on is Matt Shaugnessy who signed a prove it deal last year and played well…patriots also looking at him

    • Nfl All Day

Sounds about right. What he do last yr?

      • GEAGLE

Last year was his first year proving he could transition to OLB and he handled it well, 3 sacks, 3 FR, 7PBU’s…decent backup you would wanna give some snaps too….played for a quality cardinals D….Mike garafolo says we still in the nix for Neal

        • Nfl All Day

That versatility with Neal could seal the deal. Hope he doesn’t want Barwins deal?

    • cliff henny

will he take a crap-covered sandwich of a contract that looks like filet to outside world?

      • RIP illa

Maybe. He did get paid once before, but I’m pretty sure that he never received all the money from the contract. So maybe not.

    • RIP illa

He always struck me as more of a DL, and he was a DL in his OAK days. So it depends on what side we use him on…sorta. Actually scratch that. He’s not athletic enough to play ROLB (IMO) and I’m not so sold on him being anything more than a mauler. And I don’t think he’s athletic enough for the LOLB spot either. I don’t see him doing well in covering the flat or stoping back with TEs and WRs.

With all that said. They loved him in AZ and he is a good hard nosed football player. So yeah maybe, I just have trouble seeing him as a fit anywhere.

  • anon

Gotta think that Cooper contract is a mistake looking at the FA market for WRs — they are getting NO play. Decker at NYJ, the last place a WR should be.

    • DEBO 215

5 a year for Cooper isn’t terrible though…This WR draft class is just too deep…Decker probably won’t get more than 7 or 8

    • JofreyRice

it’s amazing. People are cool with paying Riley Cooper or Eric Decker some insane loot, but because “safeties should be paid poorly” they don’t want to overspend. I just don’t get it. How the hell is Riley Cooper more valuable to a team than a top S you can scheme your whole defense in front of?

      • Will

Given up trying to figure the FO out when it comes to Defenses ….they rag tag it and hope for the best………..

      • Richard Colton

Does Riley Cooper $ + Jenkins $ get you Byrd? Especially considering the depth of this WR draft and the fact we have Maclin back. Ughhh. I’m freaking out.

        • cliff henny

no, close in yrs 1 and 2, but yrs 3-5 really holding out hope Byrd is healthy all-pro still. but it gets them alot of other guys. think Eagles still only have Shady guaranteed on ’16 roster. rest, everyone is on prove-it contracts

          • Richard Colton

Thanks Cliff. I knew you’d have the answer.

          • cliff henny

welcome. that’s what’s crazy about Eagles roster, no one has any security. even Lane can be cut in ’16. FO values flexibilty, and they do a great job. the consistancy is decision making since kelly’s come onboard is pretty astounding. hope that translates to W’s

          • JofreyRice

I’m really curious to see how Byrd will do in NO, but the conditions are pretty favorable. Familiar with the system–having played in Mike Pettine’s version of it up in Buffalo. Great young SS/chess piece in front of him in Vaccaro. Coordinator that likes to pressure the QB and cause confusion in pre-snap looks. Weak offenses within the division–Carolina, TB, and a shaky Falcons team. Offense that can strike quickly and force opponents to become one dimensional and pass-heavy in their attack. And he’s always played smarter rather than faster. Unless those foot problems are a lot more serious than just plantar fasciitis, I could see him playing pretty well into his 30s.

        • JofreyRice

oh yeah. Sure it does. But I’m thinking the commitment scared Haunted Howie as much as the big $. Byrd is not a player like Jenkins, who didn’t even receive an offer from his former team. You don’t have him over a barrel, saying “take this short-term team friendly contract and prove your worth”. You have to commit.

  • anon

I really wanted Jacoby Jones or another return guy, wonder why no interest — DAT? Sproles?

    • oreofestar

Maybe Sproles but I want the Saints to cut him, they should suffer

  • BobA

They just signed Bryan Braman, a linebacker from the Texans. Go Howie!

    • anon

      #who? Special teams. Baby steps.

      • BobA

No story about him yet, Sheil must be asleep at the switch

    • cliff henny

if he has an ACL, there’s no way we wouldnt sign him. texans also released owen Daniels i believe.

  • jabostick

Off topic but did you guys see peter king’s article this morning?

“In nine hours, NFL teams agreed to contracts totalling $1 billion”

An inflated and misleading number but still… Crazy…

  • Shane Brown

The broncos are reminding me of the iggles 2011 fiasco

    • knighn

      Big differences:
      1) Peyton Manning 2013-2014 is still better than 2010-2011 Mike Vick. Peyton Manning has also played consistently at an MVP level throughout his career.
      2) Making it to the Super Bowl after 2013 is better than being one and done after 2010.
      3) I still trust John Elway as a GM much more than Joe Banner / Howie Roseman / Andy Reid as GMs.
      4) It is unlikely that anyone on the Broncos is stupid enough to utter the words “Dream Team” or anything close to that.
      In short:
The 2014 Broncos >>>> 2011 Eagles, and I would be shocked if the 2014 Broncos went 8-8.

      • Dubya

Why would you trust Elway more? Truth be told if it wasn’t for having a franchise QB in Manning fall into his lap would have this same convo? Let’s be realistic biggest difference is the QB. If Howie somehow convinced Manning to stop being so sensitive about playing Eli in the same division we all give him the lifetime achievement award. I’m not saying Elway hasn’t done a good job, but the best thing he ever did was having the Colts cut Peyton while he still had juice left

        • Eagles4Life

Because an oline coach won’t be scheming their defense…that simple.

          • Dubya

Believe me I know the team won’t be like the eagles. Reid was grasping at straws. But when it comes down to it, if it wasn’t for Manning they probably still be playing Tebow.

        • JofreyRice

Manning “fell into his lap”? Do you remember how people were talking about how weak Manning’s arm was, and how risky it was to sign him coming off that surgery? They gave him a 5 year 96 million dollar contract based on Elway’s assessment of Manning still being Manning, got rid of Tebow–who had won them a playoff game, and turned the page. It’s very easy to say it was a slam dunk now, but that was a hell of a risk for them.

          • Dubya

But look at how many teams went after him. The Niner’s went hard Big Red even called in and checked. Manning had a list of teams he wanted to play for in his mind. Elway’s assessment? What assessment? I understand the scrutiny that came with his surgeries and right fully so but lets not make it seem like Elway made GM of the year moves. He took a chance on a HOF player just like any other team would have. If the Jaguars were in contention year after year prior they probably would have made Peytons team list too just because they were not in the NFC and had a “contending” core. Doesn’t change the fact the the Broncos were a borderline team with Tebow/Orton running the show. Peyton changed everything. Peyton chose Denver not the other way around. I’m sure Elway winning rings helps more then his GM “acumen”. That is what I have a problem with the statement above.

          • JofreyRice

I think you’re using the benefit of hindsight here a bit. Of course teams were interested–he’s Peyton Manning, but there were a lot of misgivings about his ability after that surgery. Mike Lombardi openly came out and said he couldn’t throw the ball the same way. Add that on to anonymous scouts, NFL Insiders, and analysts were talking about how he wasn’t the same guy at all a few games into the 2012 season. You can google it and check it out yourself. And they got rid of Tebow before they even knew if Manning was OK. I don’t know man, just sounds like people are sour-graping. Teams like the Broncos and Saints haven’t ensured anything, but they look like they are putting a plan together and bringing in talent. We’re signing special teams guys. I can’t be comfy with that as quickly as some of you guys can.

          • Dubya

I never said I was comfy with anything. If I had the choice I would sign Bryd Ward Revis and so on and so on. Do I wish we signed Bryd of course. Dawk is my favorite Eagles player and. The position has been a sieve. That wasn’t the point I was trying to make.

Peyton still doesn’t look the same I think the Superbowl showed us that with all his dink and dunk throws and lack of zip on some shots he did take. That being said, I would look amazing if I said screw it bring in a HOF no matter what. Lets say they didn’t get Manning surgery and all and resigned someone like Orton, would people say something like I trust Elway over Howie? Team barely made the playoffs and had some decent pieces like we do now and barely made the playoffs. Having a HOF QB that still had some skills left risk or not come to your team elevated them.Time will tell and as you say we will benefit from the use hindsight. We all praised moves of our Dream Team only to turn on the architects a couple months later. My point is don’t put the Saints and Broncos up on a pedestal because they made a splash and we didn’t.

          • Token

People will spin themselves in a ball trying to make it seems like the Eagles did something better than the other guy. Im a Eagles fan but I dont see how you can be in spin mode all the time. Elway has done a good job. He focused on bringing a title back to Denver and he may well accomplish that.

Entering this offseason Howie had a ton of work to do. Thus far, I dont see how they are improved as a football team.

The spin version…. well the 2nd year guys like ertz and lane will take big jumps and turn into all pros. Wolff will become a force. This will finally be Kendricks year. Cox will get more comfortable and be a all pro. Maclin will be back at 100%.

I have a hard time buying into that line of thinking. Its asking a hell of a lot. And really none of the players that are often brought up have flashed enough to make you think they are all pro caliber except prolly Cox. And in this scheme im not even 100% on his future.

          • aub32

So Ertz and LJ didn’t flash? What were you expecting? I get that we should not put a midnight green spin on everything, but I don’t get your standards. You dismiss every player that’s not a pro bowler. I wanted some FA upgrades as well, but that doesn’t mean we have to tear down our current guys.

Kendricks is not a stud, but he’s not a bum. We could do a lot worse, and he has some play making ability.

Boykin: You love him even more than I do and I am a huge fan.

LJ: We all knew he was raw. Yet he came in and played well all 16 games. He was certainly far from the bottom RTs in the league, and he improved as the year went on. There’s plenty of reason to believe he will grow and get better.

Ertz: He had a rough start but made some really nice plays in the second half of the season. He has shown promise and is one of the better #2 TE options in the league.

          • Token

You miss the point. Ertz, LJ fine players.

Point is, lets say LJ turns into the best RT in football this year. Is that winning us a game? Is that really impacting things much? I dont think so.

Do you think Ertz is a Graham? I mean I dont think so. Hes a solid guy. Prolly gonna be a nice 800 yard guy. Is he getting you to the next level? I dont think personally.

Boykin, really like him. This he should start over the other bums. But it wont happen here. Chip has his size standards taking precedent over talent. Ill enjoy him in the slot for two more years before he leaves.

Kendricks and Cox. I WANTED both these guys. Thought they were great draft picks. But Im not gonna sugar coat it just because I like them. Kendricks has shown me little. Instincts suck. Misses tackles. Bad in pass coverage. Hes disappointed me. I dont see how he can be projected as a all pro caliber player right now. Cox I still like. Still think of anyone he could be the stud. But in this system im not overly confident that will happen.

          • aub32

So I don’t see why you are so down on the team. Even if Ertz isn’t a Graham. He will be a very good compliment to the special guys we have, DJax and Shady.
            ….
Did you watch any of 2012? I’m sure you did. How can you say that a tackle even a RT can’t help. The RT may not be able to win games, but a bad one can certainly lose a couple.

I will avoid the Boykin topic, but even still the D isn’t void of talent. We just don’t have special players there yet. We do have starters though and not just bad starters.

          • Dubya

I’m not excited nor overly depressed as some of these other posters. Each year we go through this and someone is always disappointed. We had a lot of work to do before Chip and we will still have a lot to do even after the 10-6 year. This coming season we face a lot of playoff teams that will expose what flaws we may have and accentuate the strengths we do have. I know fans are screaming out that our window is 2-3 years we have to take advantage Foles’ low cap number. Chip’s knowledge of the college players, so do this do that etc etc. But I fall back on something Chip, Howie and yes even Lurie stated when Chip got hired. Vision, planning, sustainablitiy to build a winning program. It took Pete Carroll and their GM two years of shrewd signings and great drafts to get to the SB. They had a plan a vision and stuck with it. We won’t do it in year two I’m sorry fellas, but lets not forget what our team is we were 4-10 and then 10-6, We aren’t that bad but we possibly might not be that good. Continue to build and stop jumping off cliffs.

          • Token

What was the Eagles record against playoff caliber teams last year?

A lot of work to do. They cant puff out their chests about last year. Its was the perfect storm of circumstances.

      • JofreyRice

And Castillo. I mean, the Eagles went into that season with an Offensive Line Coach as the Defensive Coordinator. I’d think it was a joke if I didn’t know it to be true.

    • peteike

no, they bolstered their back end with Ward “the hitter” to pair with Moore the center fielder. Get huge upgrade with Aqib over DRC. Imagine Ware with Von Miller, uh oh. All gravy for them, that offense will get them places, only injury will slow that train down.

  • Nfl All Day

Norman’s son…..Rotoworld’s last quote on him says Houston gave him a shot to run with the starters in OTAs in May. That was the last new he made. So….yeah.

    • Eagles4Life

      Exactly.

  • Ark87

Just a point of discussion: Versatility

Chip clearly values it about as much as anyone. Belichick-esque. When we look at the FA signings we’ve made since chip arrived, the word has always been versitility. James Casey, Connor Barwin, Malcolm Jenkins, etc. This is clearly a key trait our FO is looking for.

How do you guys feel about it? I personally enjoy the specialists, who are really great at their primary role. Of course the weakness is the roster can end up a bit rigid and vulnerable to the injury bug (in the sense that when a specialist goes down, his back-up may be more of a special teams specialist, etc), but has a higher ceiling imo.

    • UKEagle99

It fits what we are trying to do, on both offence and defence. Line the same guys up time and again in the same places but the outcome is different. Keep the opponents off balance, hit them hard and fast. Not as easy to do subbing in & out situational guys on every down. It worked pretty well in year 1. I think everyone was impressed with both sides of the ball by and large, Billy D was slated by most when he was confirmed but acquitted himself well with what he had. Let’s roll with it.

      • Ark87

that’s fair. Forgot about that feature of the versatile line up.

    • JofreyRice

I’m with you, I’d prefer to get a guy that shows talent in one area, rather than the barest competence in several. Something that strikes me about those guys is that none of them are very good. They’re solid at best, and ineffective at worst. If they can bring in a versatile guy that is actually good at several roles, I’d be better with the thinking. But I don’t think Jenkins is that.

      • Ark87

I’ll never forget Julian Edelman, the starting DB….it was weird because it worked, and could win some games. But once that situation is upon you, winning the SB seems like a long shot anyway.

      • cliff henny

least they are staying consistant. nothing worse than signing one way then switching it up the next. end up with all mix mashed pieces. i know, am searching for silver linings. be nice to talk about offense for a day or two

    • cliff henny

like a mix of both. at some point, you just have to line up and win. offense, have that with run game, for the most part. rather have mediocre versatile guys than mediocre specialist for this defense, but somewhere there has to be a gamechanger. guess that guy is in the draft. or cox makes the jump, kendricks maybe

      • Ark87

Yeah, I’m sure Chip is hoping for more players of Ertz’s brand of versatile, rather than the jack of all trades master of none variety. But I look at that Logan pick, and I like Bennie, he’s sort of an all down NT or DE, not stand out in any particular area (though I like him most as a passing down NT, and I do think he can get better in all his areas, he’s by no means a static prospect). I can’t help but wonder if our draft, especially in the 3rd round on, will be loaded with Bennie-type picks.

        • cliff henny

yup, give me 10 Logan’s and 1 Von Miller. i like the idea of versatility, but also want 1 guy that everyone in the stadium knows is coming on 3rd and long, and not a thing anyone can do about it. was at a 10/10 on OLB, after not getting safety, am at a 15/10

          • Andy124

Barr falls to the late teens, we trade #22 and Graham to move up and snatch him.

          • cliff henny

i wont mind going WR or even trade back add 3rd and WR in 1st, but come pick #54, you’ll be able to hear me screaming from Myrtle for an OLB

  • Brent E. Sulecki

Lb Braman..nice signing. kid got some fire

    • JofreyRice

Is he from the NFL or some other league?

      • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

        HOU special team specialist

  • Eagles4Life

Another “special teams ace” LB…sure hope these aces never have to fill in several spots due to injury.

  • peteike

reading some comments by Saints fans, they all really liked Jenkins for the most part. Said hes really athletic, hustles a lot but just doesnt quite have it was only complaint. I still think some upside is there and like the character part but sometimes that only goes so far. Then I hear a bleacher report guy say hes almost considered a bust this morning, but ya bleacher report. I want to sit back and be reasoned but after a decade plus since Dawkins, attempting to get acceptable safety play this is tough to swallow. Esp with teams with less cap space taking the 2 best safeties out there, ugh. Also, what does bringing in another corner really do to sure up the back end. Without quality safety help over the top you are still limited. I guess a Revis can change that a bit but Howie aint bucking up for him.

  • Will

Alright Howie another great ST player also gonna compete at OLB maybe okay so get on your bike and find a Safety Howie…

  • borntosuffer

Per Kempski – Vegas is liking the Eagle’s moves so far?
New Eagles LB Bryan Braman once made a tackle without his helmet. Vegas has since moved the Eagles’ win-loss over-under from 8.5 to 9.5.

    • knighn

Just cutting Chung gets the Eagles that one win. It is not a reflection on who the Eagles signed.

    • jabostick

That may reflect a dislike of Dallas (and the rest of the NFC East?) moves as well

      • borntosuffer

        Very true.

    • JofreyRice

maybe they’re anticipating the league changing to an “all special teams” format.

  • Nfl All Day

Signing guy who’ve proved they’re nothing more than Special Teamers is foolish to me. Why not target guys who can play. Let them compete for starting roles, and making the loser of tge competition battle play special teams. What happens when a starter goes down. Can Maragos and Braman step in? MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE? Can we get one baller PLEASE. A DIFFERENCE MAKER!

    • peteike

still time to get some pieces. I wouldnt disount these small moves that much. Is what it is. They arent the difference makers but they also have value. Id prefer these kinds of guys over just names that are on the downward of their careers.

      • Nfl All Day

No you’re right . Maragos may be releiving Boykin on SpT. pointing to a larger role for Brandon, or they might have him tracking punts with him which will be huge. By all appearances we are gonna have one hell of a coverage team which makes the defense better by proxy. But damn it man you know what im looking for.

        • Richard Colton

I love Boykin on punt coverage. Can he just take Roc Carmichael’s spot instead?

    • anon

      every team needs backups

      • cliff henny

        not Dallas

  • Will

So the Eagles add Jenkins, Maragos and Braman……..

    • Richard Colton

      Norman?

      • Andy124

        Bryan. 6’5″ 250 OLB special teamer. Undrafted. Don’t think there’s a relation.

        • Richard Colton

Don’t have access to Twitter at work so I’m relying on you guys. Looks like we fixed our S and OLB issues from last year. Should be good now.

        • Richard Colton

How do I upvote you but downvote your cruel edit?

          • Andy124

You don’t. There are no downvotes here. Ding Dong the Downvote’s Dead.

    • jabostick

      Sounds like a law firm

    • knighn

      You’re forgetting the other moves:
Extended Jason Peters, Jeremy Maclin, Donnie Jones, Riley Cooper

      And most importantly:
      Cut Patrick Chung

      • Will

Nothing new, knew Donnie would get resigned, knew Chung would be gone along with Colt, Coleman and Allen…..So you jettison 4 Safties and sign 2 no names big deal….wasn’t thrilled about Mac signing need improvement at WR not same old song and dance 800 yd under performing WR again…………

        • knighn

That comment was mostly to take a shot at Chung. I am not psyched about these moves. One thing that I consider: some of the players that the Eagles are actually missing out on – could the Eagles have actually gotten these guys here over the Saints or the Broncos? I mean, without paying these guys wayyy beyond what they are worth? Would have liked the Eagles to sign better players but it still takes two to Tango.

    • JofreyRice

I’d have to guess Braman’s a camp body. Good to see what their priorities are: special teams and camp bodies less than 24 hours into FA.

      • Token

They havent learned from keeping all the ST aces last year.

I think thats on my Chip aggravations list. He seems to want to have a bunch of ST aces that cant play NFL positions. Which really messes up your team talent and depth.

And he also wants versatility over talent. Being versatile means little if you are average or worse at all the different things you can do. In the NFL id like a guy to be high level at just one thing.

        • RIP illa

On the ST thing I completely agree. On the versatile thing, I agree somewhat, but there are a lot more exceptions for versatility than ST aces, so to speak. Anyway, we have a good core on both O and D. Time to start injecting some serious talent in a lot more spots on this team.

        • borntosuffer

Isn’t it a little early and a bit ungracious to have aggravations with Chip’s approach given what he has done in one year?

          • Adam

“What have you done for me lately?”

          • aub32

Pass on Byrd, Verner, Ward, Talib, MJ……O don’t forget he hasn’t won the SB yet. Come on Chip

          • Andy124

Haven’t won a game in months.

        • jabostick

The way I see it, is most teams don’t let studs leave. When they do (i.e. Byrd) it doesn’t necessarily make them a fit (because of contract, injury history, etc).

So the FA approach of Philly seems to be ST guys, borderline starters, etc and not doling out money just to keep up with the Jones’ (figuratively speaking, not Jerry). In some cases – like Barwin, and hopefully Jenkins – they come in and be much more than that.

The draft is where you find your stars. You also get them at much cheaper rates. And I think Chip and Howie value ‘value’ and starters on rookie contracts are good value. Resigning guys on your team that deserve it is good value. Cheap FA’s for depth are good value.

          • anon

Name the last star we’ve drafted on D?

          • jabostick

Fletcher Cox, Brandon Boykin, and Kendricks may not be ‘stars’ in the sense you’re saying but are all guys I consider worthy of building a defense around. I maybe should’ve said starters, and not stars.

Still, on most teams stars come from the draft.

          • RIP illa

Actually we didn’t build the ad around Cox. We specifically changed the D, despite his skills, and are making him adapt. Kendricks has not even come close to a guy you build a defense around, and I’ve never seen a team build a D around a nickel corner! We have some solid pieces on D for sure, but we gotta start hitting on impact players and game changers…Stars. I see what you’re saying tho. I just don’t think of it in as rosy terms as you do.

          • Richard Colton

Chris Collingsworth says Kendricks is a star in the making…so…ahhh, I got nothing

          • RIP illa

            Lol. Hopefully.

          • Andy124

Think of it as only drafting for 2 years. We all know before that was garbage. Our batting average the last two years is impressive. We’ve drafted Cox, Logan, Boykin and Kendricks who are all quality players, and Wolff who could be, in just 2 years.

          • anon

Any of those guys making a pro bowl? And those are the guys we’re so worried about extending? Cox / Boykin might just walk to places where they can play their natural positions and make more $$.

          • Adam

Anyone who understands the NFL knows the Pro Bowl means nothing. It’s a popularity contest and nothing else. Boykin had the 2nd most INT’s in the league and he wasn’t even allowed on the ballot. Far and away the best gunner in the league as well, wasn’t on that ballot either. Pro Bowl is a joke.

          • Token

Boykin plays 50% of the time. His own team doesnt believe in him. FA chumps start over him.

That kid is gonna go start somewhere. When that does happen im curious to see how you guys spin it.

          • aub32

He won’t make it that far. The Eagles can extend him next year. No other team will be able to talk to him. Do you really expect him to play for thousands when the Eagles can offer millions?

          • RIP illa

Yeah I have no problem with it. Just need to get some greatness mixed in here and there. If that means you have to forego some character issues, versatility, love of the game, ST ability, or any other “perfect world” attributes, then do it. Coulda, shoulda, woulda…but I really don’t like talking ourselves out of certain players for other types of less talented players. I think the core is almost there after the last 2 drafts, and that’s way quicker than I expected. So let’s finish it off, so to speak, this draft and get at least one difference maker in the process.

          • aub32

“I’ve never seen a team build a D around a nickel corner!” HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Love it! Exactly! I love our young guys. They are so much better than most of the guys we drafted in 2010 and 2011, but they aren’t franchise players. They are good starters.

          • jabostick

Ok, I need to be more careful with my semantics :) I wouldn’t build a team around Boykin OR Kendricks OR Cox. But if my defense was built up of 11 “good starters”, as you call them, I’d be happy. That kind of defense might not lead the league, but it would complement the real strength of the team, which is the offense.

          • aub32

I’d argue you still need a special player or two, or a collection of semi-special players to form a special group.

          • jabostick

Fair enough. This group mightn’t need to be special though. I’d take good/really solid.

          • GEAGLE

They will be known STUDS by the end of the 2014 season…take that to the Bank!!

          • aub32

Aww man! I haven’t seen you take anything to the bank in almost 36 hours. I was getting worried.

          • Token

a few days ago he said Chung wasnt getting cut TAKE IT TO THE BANK!

          • aub32

I don’t mind him taking things to the bank. I just find it funny how he will then brag about being right about 70%+ of what he says will happen. I guess that’s true if you then deny that you ever said the things that were wrong.

          • Token

just stop. You said the SAME EXACT THING before last season. Kendricks didnt turn into a stud. Nor did Cox. Im guessing in a few weeks you will be telling us how Jenkins is gonna be a stud. No shame.

          • Token

Boykin is on the bench half the time. They changed the scheme to go away from Cox’s greatest strengths, Kendricks? Come on, lets stop bringing up his name in these conversations. Hes shown nothing to warrant it.

          • jabostick

Boykin is arguably the best in the league at what he does. But you’re right, f*ck that guy.

Cox is disruptive DESPITE a change in scheme that went against his greatest strength. Maybe he’s just good and will get better? Kendricks has improved, is super athletic and I think he has maybe the highest upside on the defense.

          • Adam

If we can get a player that generates consistent pass rush at the OLB, that will open up more opportunities for Cox in the interior.

          • Adam

Your opinion is not the same as his, therefore you are wrong.

          • RIP illa

Gotta start finding those stars during the draft tho!

      • RIP illa

I wouldn’t say that. I think he’s more. Phillips (ILB) should have been a camp body but was pretty much a lock on to make the roster, before the injury. I think Braman is in the same boat. Right now I see his main competition being against Phillips and Matthews, but more so Matthews due to the fact that Casey was our reserve OLB. So Braman comes in for ST and reserve OLB purposes. Also forgot that he could get outplayed by Kaddu and Long, but those are longshots as of now.

Read somewhere that he had 7 missed tackles attributed to him on ST last year. That’s really bad.

        • JofreyRice

I watch a ton of NFL games, but I have to say, I pretty much fast forward through just about all special teams plays. To my disgrace as a football nerd, I just don’t find that part of the game terribly interesting. I know I’m supposed to like it, but I just don’t. I’ve watched a bunch of the Texans defense, because I like JJ Watt and Wade Phillips’ version of the 3-4, but I can’t say I’ve seen their STs at all. Had never even heard of this guy.

          • RIP illa

Lol. Nothing wrong with that. ST is being changes and slowly phased out anyway. It’s only important when something big happens both good and bad, as you already know. There’s no need to like it and it’s only right that you don’t know this guy, cuz other than the no helmet tackle, he hasn’t done shit to distinguish himself in the league. But hey…chin up. We’re on our way to being winners of the ST bowl!!!

          • Andy124

Yeah, but he’s 6’5″. He’s going to beat up some little people.

          • RIP illa

With all these little people beatings going on in Philly lately, I wonder how long before it’s considered a hate crime.

        • GEAGLE

Is ugly duckling Mathews still under contract? Swear he was a free agent, or was that just an awesome wet dream? :)

          • RIP illa

            Just a super awesome dream…sadly!

Bryan Braman.. looks like a lunatic. At the very least we should have a tremendously upgraded ST unit this year. Check out his no helmet hit on youtube.

    • Brent E. Sulecki

his grandfather was 7’4″ 460lbs..now that’s some big genes in that fam

      • Joe from Easton

        haha, i just saw that.

      • cliff henny

still need a NT, will Pops take a team friendly contract?

    • Michael

  • Eagles1018

    Bryan Braman…..#splashfreeagency

  • Will

Well the 2nd day FA rush to sign cheap unheralded players who are borderline starters why am I not surprised…

  • Stuart Philp

These last two moves should greatly improve special teams (big weakness last year, 25th in the league), good stuff.

    • UKEagle99

      Agreed.

  • GEAGLE

See while I like that we are putting so much emphasis on ST, since it cost us the Vikings and Saints games which were our only loses since we played Dallas in October, it’s tough to get Excited about a move this. When there is a pro bowl ST player out there named Corey Graham, who would BRING IT on ST, but also be a player we want to use on defense in subpackages, and who provides backup depth all over the secondary….Howie, WTF are you doing dude? Get Corey SIGNED NOW, he is as good a ST play if not better then anyone you signed, while also bringing more bang for our Buck because he would have a role on our defense…I can’t enjoy a signing like this with Graham still on the market

    • Joe Thomas

Graham would seem like a perfect fit. Fills a need, provide depth in secondary, standout special teams, should come at a good price. Such a logical move.

      • GEAGLE

So damn logical that it’s starting to worry me lol…the kid was Chips best player when he was the HC at New Hampshire

    • JofreyRice

Didn’t they put a bunch of emphasis on STs last year, too? And they still had bad ST’s. I really prefer the idea of bringing in talented athletes you project as starters, and having them play on STs, Let the talent flow from the top down naturally, the way it does on a squad like Seattle, rather than targeting Special Ed aces.

Haunted Howie is not paying for Graham.

      • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

to be fair, 2 of the “aces” last year were Philips and Benn, who never played. Don’t see how that’s howie’s fault. Donnie was also a FA last year. I’d say it was a huge improvement from ’12

        • Token

This Phillips guy better be gods gift to ST the way some people want to get on that hype train.

Not saying you in particular, but jesus his name is brought up a lot. Like it would be the difference in a win or loss. Once upon a time Colt Anderson was talked about in the same way.

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

can’t say I’ve seen those comments. judging on how they view Goode and Knott (who are actually useful as reserve ILB as well as just ST), he pry won’t stick around. 730K this year, no dead. maybe would have been a good signing, but if he never plays a down it’s not exactly an epic failure

        • anon

          Donnie was a proven guy

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

i dont get your point. so was every other ST guy they signed

        • JofreyRice

that’s true. But other guys they kept, Colt, Casey Matthews, etc. were specifically to bolster STs.

          • Andy124

Nah. Casey was kept solely as a cruel joke.

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

maybe they would not have been, had the new aces been healthy. clearly, they didn’t think too highly of them, since it appears we grabbed both their replacements today.

I can’t fault Howie for signings like those today. 53 guys have to be on roster, not just 22 all-stars. For a $1mil here or there, no biggie.

          • JofreyRice

I can fault him, if only from the perspective of priority. These are OK guys to add, but with all the other holes?

          • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

? so we should come to terms, but tell them not to sign dotted line until Revis or Ware get here?

I think guys like Braman and the SEA safety have more interest in them from other teams than is let on, just because they’re not starters does not mean they’re not an upgrade.
Hasn’t even been 24 hrs yet. And on that note, I’m signing off for awhile, just gets too nuts until the weekend calm and objectivity hits.

    • Jarrod

I thought the rumor was Graham felt he was a starter and wanted to go somewhere to be a starter. Eagles can offer him a shot at being the starter (maybe) but in reality he would be the #4. He might not be as interested as we are.

      • GEAGLE

That’s why I used to suggest trying to move him to safety…not cuz I expect him to be our safety solution, but because he could look and see how weak we are at safety and feel like he has a shot at competing for the starting position….once we sign him. “Sorry you didn’t win the safety competition lol”
        .
For the fans obsessed with letting Boykin play some snaps on the outside, having Graham would allow it….I don’t know if Jenkins is the type of safety that would allow us to play dime, but having two slot CBs the caliber of Graham and Boykin is a weapon we could use,.for the limited snaps Graham has gotten, dude made some huge plays…without Graham and Cary stepping up when all the injuries piled up, the ravens probably wouldn’t have won a SB..Peyton,Brady they all thought they could pick on Cary and Graham, yet they have 2012 SB ring and Peyton and Brady don’t!

    • Token

Half the roster was ST aces last year and it didnt mean anything. You find the best talent you can. Targeting ST guys who cant do anything else is a good way to end up mediocre.

      • aub32

The Pats target STs guys all the time. In fact, I’ve heard numerous times how much BB values STers more than most coaches.

  • Will

Still no place kicker which was a very weak spot on ST last year…

    • UKEagle99

*weak leg I think his spots were OK.

      • Will

        lol…yup….

  • Eagles1018

And there is still no word on Hauschka being re-signed by the Seahawks. I’m holding out hope for that as well

    • Will

Now that would be a FA steal…….

    • Richard Colton

Won’t happen. Why would Hauschka come here? More importantly, why would we spend top $ for a kicker?

      • George

why would we spend top dollar?? period??

      • DEBO 215

Hauschka wouldn’t cost much. I’d rather have just about anyone over Alex Henery…

        • Richard Colton

Me too. It won’t be the top FA kicker on the market. One Chris Boniol is enough for one lifetime.

      • Will

Because a 40 yard FG from Alex Henry is a scary proposition…lol…

        • UKEagle99

Even more worrying than this is that an extra point attempt may be a 43 yard attempt if it gets passed later in the year…

          • Michael Myers

            wont happen this year imo

        • Richard Colton

Henery vs. Hauschka is a false choice. We can do better, just not with a top money guy.

          • Will

And exactly who would you suggest? Bear in mind the league is talking about making extra points a 40 yard kick which Alex Henry proved he can not do consistently…

          • Richard Colton

Come on Will…you know who my guy is. Hint – “Fjord”
Anyway – Haushcka is going to want to be the highest paid kicker in the game. He also is going to expect to be handed the job day one. Neither of those things will happen here.

          • Will

Now that’s a Kicker loved the Basketball kick and the last hitting the ball with another one….Sign him no brainer…60yds automatic….who is he?

          • Richard Colton

His name is “Kickalicious.” He’s from Norway. Yeah – he had a few cups of coffee with a few teams last year. But if you look at most of the good kickers in the league, thats how they start. Akers was cut by the Redskins in camp before Andy Reid picked him off the scrap heap.

Anyway – Howie has said that they will bring another kicker into camp to compete. I’m pulling for this guy. But who knows? I just know it won’t be Hauschka.

          • Will

What’s to consider if he can do all that in a football uniform? Wow how does he not start some where?

          • Richard Colton

There’s only 32 kicking jobs. Takes a while for some of these guys to mature and latch on.

          • jcwhy

Jeff, Chip, and Howie better be one of these views…

          • Michael Myers

he lost out to akers last year, id like to see him in camp tho

          • GEAGLE

You guys would be really surmised to see how similar Haushka and Alex were last year….but I would trust Haushka significantly more. But I doubt we sign a name kicker and cut Alex…they will bring in a smaller name and have him compete with Alex….but they could have cut Alex yesterday as far as I’m concerned

          • Joe from Easton

My high school kicker (Jon Boyer who has now found internet fame by being a kitty saving cop in Baltimore) made 40 yarders look more routine than Henery. Sign him off the street and he’d be an upgrade. Do it Howie, do it.

          • GEAGLE

I ain’t shedding tears over Alex

          • Richard Colton

            sign him up!

          • Adam G

His FG % was 12% higher than henery and 10% more touchbacks. How is that similar?

          • Token

            Ok Rueben Frank.

          • GEAGLE

Did you think I was watching films on kickers and researching their stats for myself? Lol…not really that hard to figure out. If we were going to flat out replace Alex, we could have cut him already..not to mention the eagles said like 5 times that they were bringing in competition for Alex…Haushka ain’t picking a team that will make him compete for a job. Think I wouldn’t swap Haushka for Alex if If were up to me? …that’s just not the reality of the situation.. Reality is Alex will be here competing in camp, hopefully someone takes his job..
            ..
What bothers me about Alex isn’t what I think of him or what, fans and media say about him….what really really really bothers me is we had two very different coaches since Alex was drafted, and neither EVER really showed any trust in him..rarely have eagles coaches even let him attempt long range kicks, and Chip didn’t even trust him enough to attempt to kick off against Cordarell.
            .
The lack of trust Andy and Chip have displayed in our kicker is fat out scary!!!

      • Eagles1018

Good point…we don’t spend money on anything else. Let’s hope Alex Henery can kick an extra 5-10 yards this year with more accuracy.

        • Richard Colton

You’re the guy that goes TE/K in fantasy round five, aren’t you? There’s always one.

      • Token

Because we dont have a kicker with a NFL leg? Seems like a good reason. Hauschka is used to bad weather. Kicked well in the playoffs. Can kick distance. Can kick touchbacks. Hes a kicker, its not a lot of money. Why is EVERYONE so concerned about the Eagles checkbook? Its so weird.

Im all for finding a UDFA top notch kicker. They come into the league every year it seems. But I dont have confidence in Howie finding that guy. Ill pay for the guy someone else found.

        • jcwhy

Kick, Kick, Kick a licious !!

        • Richard Colton

at another position (safety) I’d agree with you. I wouldn’t even rule out a FA. Why on Earth would Hauschka come here knowing he won’t be handed the job?

          • Token

Why wouldnt he be handed the job? Im not following here. If hes signed hes the kicker, Henery is gone.

Dont tell me you buy that Chip coaching speak about competing everyday and all that jazz. Its BS. Is Jenkins not going to start?

          • Richard Colton

They have Henery, last year of rookie deal. He wasn’t god-awful, he was probably the 18-20th best kicker last year. The year before he was a lot better. I think the organization is down on him, but not necessarily ready to cut bait. My guess is they’ll bring in someone to compete. The #1 FA at the position doesn’t fit their style.

Will Jenkins start? Depends. Maybe Buchannan beats him out in camp. What a great 3rd rounder he would be.

          • anon

We lost the playoff game by how much?

          • Richard Colton

By a Roc Carmichael special teams play and domination in the trenches. One of those things was fixed today.

Again. I don’t like Alex Henery (but I do like facts – shout out to Alex Henery boy)

          • Token

Man, if you havent seen enough of Alex Henery we just wont agree on this topic. Hes a bad NFL kicker. Anyone off the street can make it from 35. 40 is the top end of his range.

          • Richard Colton

Don’t make me into an Alex Henery guy. I’ve gone on the record saying I want him out of here. I just know they won’t be brining in Hauschka.

      • ab

Because Alex Henery cost us the playoff game last year, for all intents and purposes.

  • Will

Gonna go hope the Birds make some more moves still shaky at Place kicker, Safety, back up QB and OLB….

  • Nfl All Day

Yeah this Braman kid just stepped out the time machine from ’77. He’ll be appreciated here.

    • Joe from Easton

Apparently he’s had to have a lot of his teeth replaced. Sounds like a true philly guy, lol.

  • jcwhy

Sign Kickalicious! guy does it all…

    • Richard Colton

      never heard of him

      • jcwhy

just Google or youtube him, pops right up. couldn’t attach the link, my apologies

        • Richard Colton

dude, I’m messing with you. Scroll down.

          • jcwhy

you got me, haha… shoulda scrolled first

    • UKEagle99

Unless he can kick a football in to the back of a moving lorry, blindfolded, I’m not interested.

      • Richard Colton

Lory. You’re literally my favourite poster here.

        • UKEagle99

Lol. I’m literally over the moon.

  • Nfl All Day

Charles Tillman could convert to safety ala Charles Woodson. He’d make you some plays too.

  • peteike

What are the GIants doing besides letting half their team leave.

    • http://www.corcommunity.com/ theycallmerob

      signing crappy replacements like schofield

      • GEAGLE

Rashard Jennings and Shwartz were good signings…giants fighting with Denver over Beason..Jacoby Ford is visiting NY….they are dumb, Linvale Joseph should have been their top priority

  • oreofestar

I still think if we get Ware and a few more depth signings and maybe a trade for a decent safety I still think we would be fine, Hopefully Howie will be aggressive in the draft since he was kinda lax in free agency

    • Token

Ware going to Denver. Hes smart.

      • eaglesfanqc

How can Denver had some money left after signing Ward to an ok deal and Talib to a monster deal? Do we have the same salary cap? Maybe St Manning is so damn good that is money isn’t counting for salary…

        • Token

Cap hell is a myth man. Dont let Howie scare you too.

      • Jerry Pomroy

        Ware’s going jewelry shopping…

Chip saying Braman will be given an opportunity to compete for a spot at OLB was being somewhat obvious. He’ll back up Barwin & play STs.

      • oreofestar

I really want Ware and I do not think it financially responsible for the Broncos to spend like this with Thomas, Knighton, Thomas, Miller and Welker hitting the open market next year and the first 4 are all do raises but hey why not put all your chips into one season

        • peteike

They are all in to win now, maybe one more yr after that. They will def let Welker walk, hes a concussion away from career being over. Thomas/ they have to resign.

          • oreofestar

Yeah well they $9.5 mil after signing Talib, Ward and Caldwell and they are chasing after Ware have to sign draft picks which is like 4mil and they got some extensions due

  • Nfl All Day

Wow. Via nfl network….Miami spent $146M last yr and improved just one game. We spent maybe half that and went up 6.

    • anon

that was more about front office than player personnel

  • Nfl All Day

What about signing alex mack and swinging him to guard. Browns can match, but get no compensation if he leaves.

  • David

Has there been a “report” linking the Eagles to Ware? I’ve seen several tweets etc. speculating that the Eagles might like him, or that he’d be a good fit, but I haven’t seen any actual reporting linking the Eagles to him. May have missed it.

    • anon

How many tweet about ward and bird? don’t believe everything you read — be surprised if ware leaves denver. He’d def get less $$ here, which is why we have no visits reported.

      • GEAGLE

We probably have more cap space to offer him then Denver..they started with 20m, we started with 24, and they added more quality them we did. They can’t outbid us if we are that interested..lli don’t even get WTF the broncos are doing…Jared Allen played like a beast last year and he is a pure 4-3DE so I don’t even get why they are talking to ware instead of Guys like Jared Allen and Peppers….I would love us to try and get ware or Woodly as pass rushers…
        ..
Seahawks cut Chris Clemons but we went down that round already…

        • anon

I thought we would pounce on woodley, seems only natural that he could play with cole and barwin, but what do i know.

On Clemons — you never went back to an old gilfriend?

        • Adam G

They actually started with 30 mil.

        • oreofestar

Woodly is a huge hell no but If we want Ware we have more to offer we currently have about $9mil more in cap than Denver if we want him we get get him, That sport science stuff could prolong his career and he can revenge on the Boys he could be interested ut if Howie is interested we can offer more money than Denver, we just gotta see if he is interested

          • GEAGLE

Ray Hortons interest in Woodly makes me want him. Ray knows what he is doing when it comes to defense…but like Cliff points out the contracts may be a problems…
            .
I’m kind of thrown off by Louis Riddick former eagle, talking about how we should be really really interested
            ..
I’m lost trying to figure out this pass rush market,,,seen the young, not so proven pass rushers get PAID..but it seems like Wood,Allen,Ware and peppers having a hard time getting deals they like…if we can get ANY of them on a two year deal, I’d do it and still draft an OLB…but I would pass if they insist on longer then a two yr daal

        • cliff henny

problem with Ware is he’ll get 2yrs 8m/yr. he left Dallas, worst he was owed was 12m this year. is he worth more money and more yrs than Cole (assuming cut next yr), who would add 3m in additional dead over 2 yrs. Ware’s fun to talk about because of spite, love to see him destroy Romo, doubt it’ll happen.
          .
Cole in base 1st and 2nd, draft Barr/your boy Marcus and get a KVN or C Smith to play on passing downs.

      • peteike

players going to Denver chasing that ring.

        • oreofestar

unfortunately it is just like the NBA, I hope their dream team ends up like ours did and they waste Peytons last years imploding with injuries and horrible chemistry

          • peteike

all it takes is one false move on that neck of his. Then they are stuck in no mans land. Or another playoff exit, just cant see more than 2 seasons for PM max. I live in Denver and hate the Broncos so I root against them constantly, much more fun to see my coworkers suffer

        • cliff henny

          legal weed too

  • MostBoringFAPeriodEver

To go 5 hours in between updates is a little embarrassing. If you’re not going to provide us with updates at least write some articles about the team going forward, or possible draft targets. You’ve spoiled us with Eagles coverage for years, just because the organization is sitting on their hands doesn’t mean this site has to follow suit.

    • oreofestar

Yo it is not their fault there is no news are they supposed to pull news out of there ass, I mean they could have reported that we called Revis but I am liking the username :P

    • cliff henny

good point…as much as we all hate chung, nice detailed story of his last minutes to appease the blood thirsty masses (or, at least me)

    • sdk152

Don’t know where you’re looking. You may have to refresh your page. There has not been a five-hour period without updates here. -SK

      • cliff henny

he’s right, maybe being a bit of a jerk about it, but page hasnt updated since 8-55

        • Token

Updates start at the top of article. Not the bottom like past days. Think thats why people are missing it.

          • sdk152

Yup. Tried to explain that at the beginning of the post.

          • Dominik

I don’t want to offend anyone, but it isn’t rocket science, either.

          • cliff henny

8 seconds on twitter and get more updates than you can handle

          • MostBoringFAPeriodEver

Well I apologize sir, I too was looking at the bottom of the page, and I even read the part where you said that you will put the newest first. I thought you were referencing the comments, because there have been thousands, and it can be a pain to have to hit “Load More Comments” when there is thousands. I was just pressing refresh every 20 minutes or so and see the 8:55 post over and over.

So I admit that I am the village idiot and deserve the virtual garbage and vegetables typed at me!

          • peteike

my favorite part of yesterday was still seeing LaCanfora tweet at top of page all day, completely wrong

          • cliff henny

well smack my ass and call me Sally, thanks Token!

    • Dominik

      1. I see a maximum of 2 1/2 hours between updates (9 to 11:30).

      2. Would I like to read more? Yes. I’m freaking out for (good) news. Can I command more news? No. Absolutely not.

    • peteike

here ya go….”Steelers free-agent S Ryan Clark said on SportsCenter he is going to visit the Washington Redskins”

    • EaglesFanInPhx

      Cool story bro.

  • Uncle Wonder

Well we werent gonna pay Ware 10mm per so I guess its good for Denver

    • cliff henny

wonder what he’s looking for? lowest Dallas could go was 8m. he must think he’s worth more on open market.

      • GEAGLE

        Done deal 3yrs 30mil. 20 gaurenteed

        • cliff henny

          rather have Byrd’s contract

          • GEAGLE

Byrd,Ward, even Talibs! MJ by FAR!!!

  • Nfl All Day

Jared Allen wants his full value and isn’t willing to take below market value, but we should have a look. That dude is a baller. Scheme be damned, 13.5 sack last yr.

    • GEAGLE

      He can’t play OLB

      • Nfl All Day

Doesn’t need to. he could handle the 5. Hes still a beast.

        • GEAGLE

DOubt he would be thrilled to spend his golden years two gapping..but right about now, I’d be happy to welcome any defender who will get in QBs faces
          ….
From the front office point of view I assume he costs too much to be such a bad schematic fit….what did Dwight Freeny sign for last year? Whatever that is, that’s the range I’d be willing to pay for the senior citizen pass rushers

    • peteike

hes holding out and losing value. Maybe not though, we’ll see

  • GEAGLE

    Ware is a bronco..,3yrs 30mil, 20mil In guarenteed
    ..
    Giants kept Beason

    • cliff henny

Lordy…team must own stock in weed. handing out monopoly money out there

      • GEAGLE

Where the hell did they get all this money…handed out like 70mil in Guarentees..wtf

        • cliff henny

saturday getting a case of guinness opening up overthecap.com after all these contracts are updated. NO and Denv will be first stops, well after enjoying Dalllas

          • GEAGLE

I can’t even imagine being a fan on a team that just added Ward,Ware and Talib to their defense. Must be nice, when Malcolm Jenkins is our crown jewel lol…heck I can’t even get the backups I want lol

          • EaglesFanInPhx

So I have to say, I was really HOPING for a lot more in FA.. but not expecting more. Build through draft, carry over a nice chunk to have flexibility to extend homegrown talent, and batting average FA approach on versatile players is exactly what I expected.

          • cliff henny

well, to be debbie downer…these guys have red flag issues…shoulder, neck and legal weed…they are rolling the dice some.

      • GEAGLE

Gonna be a beast with a QB that let’s him always play with a lead and pin his ears back

  • anon

Ware to Denver for $30mm/ $20 guaranteed

  • Nfl All Day

So there’s what Allen prob. Wants. $10M a yr. Would you pay a million bucks a sack?

    • GEAGLE

      Rather have Julius peppers

      • Nfl All Day

        Idk. I’d trust Allen more

        • GEAGLE

Me too. But we would be forced to play all 4 man lines on 3rd, and he will make too much to not be able to play in our base 3-4

          • dmancine9

            can Peppers play OLB?

          • Nfl All Day

6’6″ 270lbs. Have him put on 10-15 lbs. He’s a great athlete I think he’d hold up at DE. IMO

      • Javi Echie

Yea I think I’d lean towards Allen as well

  • oreofestar

    Damn the Broncos

    • Javi Echie

      Dream Team 2.0

    • peteike

all in on Peyton, good luck with that. Its like the Braves or Yanks back in the day, get you to the dance just never guaranteed to close the deal.

  • GEAGLE

Why the hell is Shefter still talking about Revis and the eagles….did he happen to miss all the quality players a passed on due to money?

    • oreofestar

At this point I doubt they do it but hey Howie surprise me

      • Corey

It’s funny hearing people say “will the eagles go all in on Revis?” Howie isn’t going all in on anyone, unless of course they bring incredible talent to special teams.

    • anon

Maybe eagles can’t play for other FAs b/c they are saving $$ for Revis.

      • oreofestar

        I hope so…

    • aub32

Maybe Revis is the only guy Howie grades as an A+ type player

  • oreofestar

I wonder what the Broncos plan to do wth Julius, Demarius(spelled wrong), Terrnace and Von they just signed 3 players and used 25mil per year on 3 guys

    • cliff henny

win Super Bowl and blow it up, hope to hang onto couple pieces. i’d be doing the same thing.
      .
will be rooting against NO vs Denv SB, that’s for sure

    • Javi Echie

I was thinking the same thing and those three guys are gonna want to be paid a hefty amount being that they are some of the best at there positions

      • oreofestar

You can not keep them all I hope they suck and end up like us in 2011-2012 because you can not buy a bowl win

        • Javi Echie

I am hoping the same thing broski

          • oreofestar

Yeah they are pissing me off more than the Saints they are just trying to stack there team and Thomas can forget about getting an extension and then the cap strapped Donkeys will not be able to keep him next year

          • Javi Echie

I’d love to see Miller or Demaryius on the eagles but i’ll have to keep dreaming for that.

    • Nfl All Day

Demaryius is up next yr. Next is a GREAT WR class. Him, Dez, AJn Tory Smith, Nelson and Cobb, Cecil, Crabtree. And if you want exp. Marshall, Wayne, and Roddy. ….Maclin better ball or ill be advocating we move on.

      • oreofestar

Other teams are not going crazy even the Cowboys are smart enough to lock Dez up as I expect Cincy and Baltimore to be for their guys but the Broncos just want to spend BILLIONS

        • Nfl All Day

Never know man. GB has to be smart if they wanna keep both those kids. With Lacy right behind em. Sad how im already looking forward to next year.

          • Nfl All Day

I think Cobb is who you wish Maclin was.

    • Nfl All Day

If Peyton retires thats $20M right there. And thats a real possibility.

      • oreofestar

When will he retire then, unless he retires next year the are f***ed even if he retires then they are f***Ed cuz then they need a QB

      • Maggie

Peyton retiring? The Broncos are blowing the budget on defensive players who they hope can win a Super Bowl for Peyton!!

        • Nfl All Day

          We’re talking about next year.

  • Corey

I can’t believe how worthless the Eagles have been in FA so far. They don’t need to break the bank, but c’mon, do something. The fact that they are only looking at special teams players tells me they are wrapping up activity.

    • Javi Echie

Hopefully Howie can pull a trade out the hat like he did for Demeco a couple years ago

      • Corey

Trades are almost all they could do. Some good depth left out there, potential fits, but the silence makes me think they aren’t even looking on the open market.

        • Javi Echie

I’m with you on that I am just trying to be optimistic during the bs FA we are experiencing.

      • cliff henny

so few trades in NFL, wouldnt bank on that. most are our garbage about to cut for your’s, Gaethers for Havili

    • dmancine9

well, apparently you do need to break the bank to sign most of these top FA’s. this strategy was the Eagles’ plan all along. they said so, time and time again. they weren’t going to exceed their limits for any player. you don’t build a team through free agency, you do so through the draft.

    • Maggie

Half the people on here whined endlessly about bad Special Teams and now you complain because they sign Special Teams players? Wasn’t ST supposed to be a priority? Knock off your foolishness. They have weeks of signings, deals, draft, etc.

  • lou

Would be interested to see the Eagles put a move on Thurmond or browner could probably get browner on the cheap suspended 4 games and 4 more paychecks after that could be had on the cheap and then maybe seeing how interested Charles Tillman would be to play safety and be that old brawl status flying around wrecking havoc forcin fumbles and it’s all day just spit ballin

    • Javi Echie

I been advocating for Thurmond. Played well when Browner was suspended plus theres the Oregon ties there as welll

      • lou

My thoughts exactly could be a fit have him come in to compete with cary

    • lou

Meant to say bdawk not brawl

  • oreofestar

I would not expect Howie to give Ware 3 years 30ml with 20 guaranteed but damn he is not doing anything

    • Corey

He probably has his feet up, sitting at his desk enjoying a platter of select meats and cheeses

      • Uncle Wonder

With a name like Roseman, i doubt he is eating meat and cheese together lol

that will probably go over most heads

        • pjcostello

There are very few Orthodox Jews, or those who keep Kosher. :-)

          • Uncle Wonder

i know…just crackin a joke for all the sad folks here.

          • Maggie

Actually there are many Jewish people who keep kosher. I once was acquainted with a butcher who ran kosher meat shop. He did very nicely, thank you.

          • pjcostello

Wow. It’s like you think you have a mandate to be contrary. THIS Jew — through 43 years on the planet, through Hebrew school and myriad workplaces, has met exactly two people who kept a Kosher house, and they were married. Thank you.

          • anon

            You gotta come to NYC

          • Maggie

Why is stating a known fact “being contrary’?

          • Uncle Wonder

Wow, im not even a Jew and i hv met more than that

  • Uncle Wonder

Right now i envision Howie in a dark room looking disheveled with tears streaming down his face, snorting lines of coke in btw shots of Scotch w a .45 pointed at a picture of Nnamdi on his wall. He lets off a round with every FA deal he sees roll across the ticker…wondering what could have been…smh

    • aub32

You’ve actually made me feel sympathy for Howie with this post.

      • Uncle Wonder

Poor kid is traumatized…he probably has a ’4-12′ banner on his wall conveniently placed under his ‘Never Again’ holocaust poster
lol, im crackin myself up today

disclaimer: i am not an anti semite

    • cliff henny

listening to Night Rangers Sister Christian in his bathrobe while little asian boy is in background throwing firecrackers

      • Richard Colton

Drum solo is the best part

        • cliff henny

will always appreciate that movie for introducing ‘roller girl’

      • Rambler

A girl I was friends with used to date one of the guys in the band for a bit. I would sing that song to her mercilessly. I despise it now and hate when it gets stuck in my head. Karma sucks.

    • jabostick

I see Howie in a dark room. When Demarcus Ware’s/Jairus Byrd’s agents text him their proposed deal, he leaps to the phone only for chip Kelly to stand up and say “Ah, ah, ah! Look on page 293 of my 2014 offseason manual!” Howie sits back down.

  • Jack

So disappointed with the Eagles! Why is that the Saints let Jenkins go and signed Byrd? Because Byrd is clearly a much better player!!! Howie Roseman may be one of the worst GM’s in the NFL!! Just because we had issues in 2011 does not mean we cant take a shot at a real playmaker not a bonafide scrub!!!

    • oreofestar

He is not one of the worst in football but sure knows how to let good ones go

    • Richard Colton

Slow down. Last 22 hours have sucked. But we went from 4-12 to 10-6. Chip Kelly. Nick Foles. He’s not the 2nd coming of Matt Millen.

      • cliff henny

2 weeks ago after extending kelce, JP and signing Mac and Coop we were slobbering his knob. i’m dissappointed but a good draft and i’ll be good again.

        • OldDocRoss

          This. A kazillion times this.

I’m not even *that* disappointed in missing out on Byrd because I wouldn’t be surprised at all if that contract is looks laughable inside of two years (it’s already fairly ridiculous). Shame we missed out on Ward but you can’t win ‘em all.

If we bring back Nate or someone at that level I’d be confident our safety situation will be much better than it was this year and we can start looking forward to the draft again.

Anyway, if you’ll excuse me it looks like my policy of upvoting all posts that recommend bringing in Kickalicious has left me with a lot of work to do.

          PS – sign Kickalicious.

    • Corey

Howie is wise not to pay outrageous amounts of money to one player, but I would say his overall approach does smell of fear. A formerly aggressive GM who ties his own hands.

    • Adam G

What on earth do you guys know? Seriously. He took control of the team in 2012, and certainly looks to be doing well so far. You do not win Super Bowl signing free agents to huge contracts, that’s been proven.

      • cliff henny

true, dont think Denver or NO are going to be happy in 3 yrs if they dont win one in next 2 yrs, but somewhere north of what they’ve done so far would be nice. not saying multiple high price, but one impact defender would have been nice. think most are on board with draft, develop and extend early, while using FA to fill in holes. a 25-26 yr old proven FA wouldnt have done any harm to cap. plus been around for some time.

        • Adam G

I agree, but I don’t think that 25-26 year old existed. Especially at the prices being paid by teams. Teams are going bonkers with this extra cap space and will most definitely have to make decisions in the future regarding players on their roster.

    • Maggie

How do you know why BYRD signed with the Saints? Try that point of view. The player has a say in Free Agency, remember?

  • oreofestar

I really want Revis now and the Eagles called but I doubt Howie is shelling out a 4 year 45mil deal for him, still we are better than last year just not better enough

    • Corey

Don’t count on Howie to sign anyone. It’s Howie. I would say even mild hope for a decent FA signing is misguided, hope for cheap garbage, that is very likely. Draft is 2 months away and it feels like it’s 6 months away.

      • OldDocRoss

Barwin, Fletch and Sconces are neither cheap nor garbage.

        Donnie Jones was cheap awesomeness.

Casey wasn’t cheap. Might be garbage but I think he just got hosed by Ertz falling to us.

Soap was garbage but not cheap.

Chung was several levels below garbage and not cheap.

Very little by way of cheap garbage really.

        • Corey

I’m talking about now at this time. We established a base roster last year, now he wants to maintain continuity by supplementing what we have with a light sprinkling of garbage.

          • OldDocRoss

Garbage would be at least six levels above Casey Matthews and Chung. Sign me up!

          • Corey

Haha, agreed. But Chung is already in a landfill somewhere and Matthews is Oregon-brand garbage, and Chip loves the scent of Oregon garbage. Will have to see if Howie can find any fresh garbage other than Jenkins.

          • anon

Not to mention Maehl, DJ2, etc.

    • anon

Better than last year? Addition by subtraction? Could we be making some under the radar moves? RB, WR, CB, OLB, ILB — can’t actually think of anyone that we’d take — NT?

      • OldDocRoss

I mostly want depth. I know a few folks think the lack of injuries last year was all down to sports science but luck played a huge part, and I really don’t want us to be a chinstrap away from seeing the likes of Roc, Matthews, Geathers or Vandervelde starting.

        • anon

Yeah we def need another corner to play outside, Roc needs to get dropped.

  • southy

Someone needs to tell the Broncos that theyre the new Dream Team

    • Corey

Someone tell Ware to say that at his presser, lol

  • Joe Thomas

Next offseason i believe we will be bigger players in free agency. Im sure everyone knew this was possible. We are only going into year two of the plan. Im sure the Eagles want to see where they are after a couple drafts, and see what holes they got left, and how close they feel they are to a championship, before shelling out for star free agents. They may view the top guys as being on the decline by the time they plan on competing. Still gotta trust the system.

    • Nfl All Day

I think you’re spot on. I’d like some sort of pass rusher but we’re going young. This draft just got HUUUUUUGE.

      • anon

There are no REAL stud OLB options for us. But there are pass rushers still out there…

  • Corey

Just heard Broncos were trying to get Byrd also. Would team Byrd with Ward, they clearly stole that plan from Eagles fans.

    • peteike

clearly, ripping our dreams out from under us. Poor Chiefs and Chargers fans.

      • Nfl All Day

Haha Andy. Wild card or bust for you til Peyton retires. What’s the feeling like for him just watching them add stud after stud. This ain’t dream team. They’re legitimately stacked. Need some o-line help, and i don’t believe in any of their backs with Knowshon still unsigned, but say they grab Tre Maosn at #31…..jackpot. AFC Champs at the least

        • anon

It’s probably the easiest RB job in the league.

          • travis papa

It’s not rocket science in fact it was all chip Kelly’s philosophy manning has used. 6 or less in the box it’s a run 7 or more it’s a pass. I have the nfl ticket and watched several of their gms. I was over 90% accurate watching their gm & predicting run/pass just counting defenders. It’s what Foles does it’s just he isn’t on mannings level of recognizing the defenses coverage and blitzes yet

        • peteike

Ball plans to take over and they have another young back that showed signs but got hurt, CJ Anderson I think is his name. ANyway like anon said, easiest rb job with PM at the helm.

          • Nfl All Day

True that. Hes so good at calling runs when he sees a weakness the opportunity will be there. I just dont like their guys.

        • GEAGLE

Andy won’t learn…after all the big FA they just lost, who does he bring in? Joe mays! Last year. Akeem Jordan, now Joe mays..he inherited a great defense and he can’t wait to replace it with all the scabs he drafted….?We should call him up and offer him Cole for Tamba Ali lol…he can’t wait to screw up that LB core, it’s like he can’t even help himsel. He must hate LBs..as an OL was there some hateful rivalry with like Dick Butkus or some LB that we don’t know about? How can such a quality coach be so clueless about a position? How do you devalue LBs they are like the best athletes…like light heavyweight fighters.l.power of heavyweights and speed of welterweights..How,can you devalue them?

  • peteike

man, the radio guys in Denver are just giddy as can be. They have a whole new starting backfield from their late season run. Talib, Chris Harris coming back from injury, same with Rahim Moore with TJ Ward. Got Ware and Von Miller on the ends, already had a stout middle with Vickerson and Pot Roast and a 1st round pick. Good luck offensive coordinators.

Added 3 pro bowlers on their D, but hey, who needs pro bowlers right. Call it dream team if you want, Ill call it filling holes with quality players.

    • anon

With the way they score points that pass rush is going to be a problem. Pass rush and picks.

      • peteike

yup, look to see some 45 to 3 games in the future. At one point they were avg 38 pts a game I think.

        • anon

I remember watching the Eagles Broncos game. My issue is that if we played that game again tomorrow I don’t see the outlook being any different, despite how much better we got as the year went on.

    • Nfl All Day

I agree. Funny thing they keep saying on the network tho, you still gotta protect your QB. They got destroyed in the SB. Just lost a starting guard to retirement. Could have helped us and signed Schwartz b4 NYG.

      • anon

        OLD deep in draft.

      • peteike

his reads and release are so fast, it discounts a lot of pass rush, but yeah you still need it.

    • Maggie

      Briefly, before Peyton quits.

  • peteike

Will Vick put himself in bad position playing hard ball. Sure you want the guy to want to be the starter but you still cant play that game too long. McCown and Shaub also filling that role, Cassell closing with Vikes closed that door as well. I dont know, Im really thinking Raider fan and Vick are a match made in heaven.

    • Nfl All Day

Said hes in no rush. Might even wait til after the Draft to get the best idea where he can start. Its dicey 4sure.

  • Uncle Wonder

In all honesty everyone should cool their heels…I know we
got our expectations high and are disappointed in the FA haul so far, but look
at the bigger picture. Idk all the plans the FO has but look at Seattle,
    everybody’s current favorite model. Pete
Carroll brought home a Lombardi after what, four seasons? Look at how they did
it – strong drafting and coaching. They were never a team you would call a big
player in FA…in fact FA hasn’t even been particularly strong for them (see T.
Jackson, S. Rice, M. Flynn, etc.). They still never let temporal mediocrity get
in the way of the long term plan. They just
stuck to what they believed in.

Anybody can see the Eagles are headed in the right direction…let
all the other teams blow their wads and see where it gets them. With the young
core and cap space we have, there are very few teams with as wide a
championship window as we have, and I wanna keep it open as long as we can. As
bad as we were Andy’s last few years, this past year was promising enough for
me to trust that the FO has a well-defined design and direction.

    • Average__Joseph

FINALLY a rational thinking fan! (I know, rational and fan don’t go together.)

      Just An Average Joseph

      • Maggie

Love rational too, although I’m not certain about Von Miller in 2 years. ;~)

    • aub32

So they didn’t go all in last year by signing Avril and trading away a 1st to get Harvin. They may not have built through FA, which I don’t think anyone is suggesting. However, they made more exciting moves than Jenkins and some STers

      • Uncle Wonder

I wouldnt exactly call signing Cliff Avril going all in…he was certainly a starter caliber player but he wasnt a ‘splash’. Harvin was an aggressive move but you do things like that when you feel you are one player away. I dont think anyone believes the eagles are one player away, they are in the process of turning over the roster with players that fit the new schemes, which takes time. We are only 24hrs into FA, there still may be something coming down the pike to wet your whistle lol.

        • aub32

I don’t think we are one player away, but are you telling me that had we signed Talib, Ward, and Ware that you would not be thinking SB? I mean we were the 2nd best offense only behind Denver, and they made those moves.

          • Uncle Wonder

Well, i addressed that. I will let them go all in…Peyton is at the end of his career, its now or nvr, and there are no guarantees that they will gel, thts an entirely new group. Their cap situation wont be pretty in a cpl yrs when PM retires…and we will be there to scoop up Von Miller when they cant afford him.
We will be thinking SB regardless…its year two of the Chip experience, we will sign ppl cuz we have to field a team. Im just not accustomed to seeing teams win the offseason SB and then actually winning the SB. We watched Snyder and Jerry try for years.

  • Nfl All Day

Talibs my vote for player most likely to say DREAM TEAM.

  • Nfl All Day

Sured be nice not to have to worry about Dez, Cruz, and Pierre any more. But this guy is gonna want a shit load

    • Corey

yeah, even if Howie would pony up a respectable offer, Revis must already be on his way to SanFran, they need to make a splash too, last contending team left

      • Nfl All Day

What do ya mean. Jonathan Martins not a splash?

      • aub32

They got Martin and Bethea. They’re good to go…..alright Howie quick before they realize I’m buffing

  • Uncle Wonder

    There goes Revis

  • Javi Echie

Yess sirrr Revis officially released…Get on the horn asap Howie!!

    • peteike

Dont Pats have to get him now with Talib leaving? never know though

      • Javi Echie

Yea I’ve read the Pats are interested but what team wouldn’t be interested in one of the best corners in the game. I am just hoping he’d like to come to Philly. Always helps that him and Shady are cool and are both Pitt alums so maybe that could help.

        • peteike

oh I didnt know that, good info, thanks

          • Corey

Revis is a financial lunatic. He won’t play unless he is the top paid at his position. I don’t know if he understands the concept of team friendly deals or the idea of taking less to play with friends. He would demand a new contract every 2 years anyway.

          • Javi Echie

Honestly I’d only really want him for two years anyways after the age of 30 he can go

          • Corey

Think Herm Edwards said your defense has to be able to accommodate a player like Revis anyway, he lines up all over the field. Sure Chip would love that versatility, but not at that price

          • Javi Echie

We also have to remember that even tho Chip has final say over roster moves he did say he would stay out of the defense entirely and let Billy deal with that side of the ball. So if we were to sign Revis I’m sure Billy will find a role for him

        • UKEagle99

More importantly there is a rumour that Revis wants to be a Patriot, probably to beat the Jets twice a year. Fortunately that rumour comes from the most unreliable of sources.

          • Maggie

            Jaworski?

          • UKEagle99

Nope, even more unreliable than him… especially where the Eagles are concerned.

          • Maggie

Ah. Got it. Off topic, UK. I was born in Worthing myself. Are you anywhere near the south coast? Just being nosy. ;~)

          • UKEagle99

Not particularly, I’m on the East Coast but still within reasonable distance of London, it’s around 45 miles from here to the city centre so we get the best of both worlds.

          • Maggie

Ah. My daughter spent 3 years with a non-profit in the 1990′s. Near Oxford. She is taking a couple of her nieces to London and Paris this spring. Anyway thanks. Better get back to the Eagles or the natives will get restless! Lol.

          • Andy124

            JLC

  • aub32

Howie it’s time to prove us all wrong and make us once again praise you as our GM savior. Sign Revis and all will be forgiven

WTF are the raiders doing? A rebuilding team let’s one of the best young players in the NFL. Lamarr Houston leave without trying to talk to him…but they are looking at hatchers old ass?

    • peteike

Heard on the radio that this season is really year 1 of rebuilding. They had to get rid of a ton of bad contracts but ya the one guy they should have kept was Houston. Oh well, they are bottom dwellers anyway starting a new era with that GM. That being said, now they cant attract anyone so its a tough place to be.

      • GEAGLE

Not even just him, wtf are they doing letting the young OTs walk? They had like 3 decent young players, they should have tagged Houston if they had to…just don’t get how rebuildin team let’s one of the best young players in the NFL leave, but will spend money on 32yr old hatcher who ain’t cheap? And we talking about a team with mega cap space…new regime, same nonsensical insanity

        • peteike

yup. the post Al Davis era but meet the new boss, same as the old boss

  • GEAGLE

How is it possible that its so damn quiet and all we did was sign two safeties and a ST player?
    ..
“The other shoe has to drop”…no? I can’t imagine that we think we are so good that we can pass on free agency…heck sign some cheap bust flier types like Cook and Cody for all I care…do something!!
    .
Did Nolan Carroll sign with anyone? He was such a sexy name. Now quiet..

    • cliff henny

Cowboys signed Terrel Mcclain and Jeremy Mincey….know anything about these guys? just going to be throw rugs for kelce and crew?

  • Corey

Howie will not sign Revis, it would be a move much too similar to the Nnamdi Dream Team signing, and Howie has frantic cold sweat nightmares about that every night.

    • GEAGLE

Of course he wouldn’t…it makes no sense at all

  • aub32

You know what was lost in the shuffle? Did Byrd really just want to hit up Chung so that they could catch up on old times?

    • Corey

Kept wondering why they kept Chung around so long. Cutting Chung was probably done as soon as they walked away from Byrd

      • aub32

Serves him right for not convincing Byrd to come here. I can imagine the conversation. “Look Chung you played so awful last year that the only way we could even consider keeping you is by pairing you with one of the top 3 safeties in the league. Otherwise, you’re out.”

        • cliff henny

Howie cut Chung before Byrd’s agent started to say the “S” in 6 years

          • GEAGLE

Stay off 5twitter, every media member is talking about how we are In the mix for Revis lol

I haven’t heard a single rumor about peppers, wth.? ATleast I heard some chatter about Woodley and Jared…not a peep about peppers.
            .
Surprised the giants aren’t trying to sign Jared. They are going all in one last time with COUGHLIN! they always won with pass rush which they currently don’t have. If they aren’t going to rebuild then they might as well sign him

          • Javi Echie

I just tweeted at Shady to start recruiting Revis to Philly lol

          • cliff henny

don’t think there’s a chance in hell. Howie’s not cutting that check. it’s that media had Eagles paying big for safety for so long, it’s easy to link casual fans to Howie finally spending.

          • peteike

            Jason Campbell released

          • jabostick

Clearly, setting the table for a Matt Barkley-Joe Haden trade.

    • Uncle Wonder

They did go to school together…im sure thats all it was

  • Adam G

Golden Tate’s deal makes Riley’s deal look like a steal.

    • Maggie

Too bad going to Detroit, of all places. Maybe he and Megatron together will make Stafford a better QB. At least they can say they have a Super Bowl winner on their team!

  • GEAGLE

Some teams are doing nice in free agency.
    .
I hear talk about broncos “dream team” but there dream team isn’t being led by Juan Castillo lol. John Fox is going to do big things with Potroast!Ward, ware!Von miller! Talib…

Pettine and the browns are doing well…Dansby was such a quality signing, Whitner is a very underrated signing.
    ..
Is there any doubt that Lovie smith will field a top defense. Adding Verner to the rookie,Goldson and Barron, having MJ fly of the edge with Lavonte David behind him
    ..
I suspect that the saints will prove to be the “dream team” instead of the Broncos…they celebrating these big sexy signing. But I think they made all the wrongs move this offseason especially with how everything impacts the Jimmy Graham situation….
    .
He had his QB pulling a Mcnabb siding with management trying to steal 5mil from Graham
    ..
Then they blow up Graham’s entire team which was a contender, still don’t give him his money,
    ..
And now he realizes he lost half his offense, not for him. But so they could make Jarius Burd Rich, and on btw, he still doesn’t have a long term deal and they are still tryng to short him 5mi on his franchise tag….if after the way they played their hand! the Saints can overcome all these bad moves and still be a contender and live happily every after with Jimmy. Then football gods are just mean

    • peteike

yup, great points. I think losing Sproles, Moore and Colston a year older, that offense will not be as potent. Sproles not done deal yet but now hes not a happy camper either.

    • Maggie

      1. Who is Burd?
      2. Goldson will miss Sunday’s game against the Lions. Goldson got out of his last suspension, but was never going to be able to dodge this one. The league is tired of his illegal hits. Eligible to return in Week 13 against the Panthers, Goldson has not been playing at a high level this season. Tue, Nov 19, 2013

  • Javi Echie

Schofield’s deal the Giants is now “dead”. Apparently they found a problem with his knee. We may have dodged a bullet there.

    • cliff henny

he should jump the next train down, guarantee his knees will pass Philly’s physical

      • Javi Echie

I was actually thinking the same thing, regardless of what the giants seen the eagles need to bring him in for there own physical.

        • peteike

ya bring him to Bynums doctor

        • RIP illa

It was a joke. Howie likes bringing in guys w/ knee problems.

          • peteike

            David?

          • RIP illa

Him too. My phone always autocorrects to that.

  • Maggie

Sheil, Great sense of humour! Or not!

  • Matt

Sign a halfway decent corner and oline depth and then go BPA in draft. Team is in a great position to add top-shelf talent in May with no glaring needs on the roster

    • Richard Colton

Damn right! Safety position is fixed. I actually think Jenkis was overkill once we got Maragos in the fold. Could be a Casey/Ertz situation. We’re poised to go WR/WR in round 1 & 2 of the draft.

      • EaglesFanInPhx

I’m trying to decide if you are being sarcastic or not… lol

        • Richard Colton

          guilty

      • Maggie

RC! You know Jenkins was here first! ;~)

  • oreofestar

Eagles called Revis and if we get him I will apologize for all my negativity, while we still need safety that can be adressed in the draft and with a secondary of revis, Boykin, Jenkins, Williams, Fletch, Wolff and a rookie that would actually be pretty dangerous

    • Maggie

Everybody complained they wanted a “difference maker” and Revis could be that all right.

      • oreofestar

If we get Revis we would finally have a secondary in the top half of the league

    • RIP illa

That really can go either way. Revis was known for his dislike of the way he was being used in Tampa…the whole zone vs playing man thing. Davis loves zone. Add that with the fact that he’s just now coming all the way back from his knee so we still have to see what he looks like in true form. And he’s old :-) Just thought I’d throw that in there. If he’s anything over 8 mil then I say F him and his history of being a money grabbing malcontent. And I still don’t like that price point. So here’s to hoping that the contract is structured severely team friendly for us…like being able to get out of it w/ minimal financial impact after one year in case things go south.

      • oreofestar

I am hoping it is a juicy Howie special that looks like 10mil a season but after 2 years of 8 mils a season he is gone lol

    • Adam G

Seriously, you gotta calm down. And they aren’t getting Revis. It doesn’t fit what they want to do on defense from a value added/money spent angle.

      • anon

Revis is the same as a good good cb and good safety which is still less than the 12mm he got.

  • http://batman-news.com theedevilsadvocate

we are not getting revis. no way

    • oreofestar

let me freaking dream yo, do not kill me spirit

      • http://batman-news.com theedevilsadvocate

        lol sorry

  • oreofestar

Maybe the Eagles value corners way more than safeties and would not mind paying Revis $10-$11mil a season, Just me hoping since Ward, Byrd and Ware are gone the latter 2 being signed to ridiculous deals that I am glad we did not pay but the first one stings

    • phillyphanlvnv

Eagles will once again squat on their $20 mil in cap savings. Stupid fans will tell you that the difference is then carried over to create cap space for the future. Truth is the Eagles will ALWAYS carry over cap space, as that is where Mr Lurie gets to line his pocket with the hopes and dreams of the Eagles fans.

      • oreofestar

It sucks besides Foles people acting like we are gonna be handing out crazy raises

        • Andy124

          Huh?

          • oreofestar

            never mind

      • Maggie

Ah. Migrated from philly.com. Still talking about Lurie running the Eagles out of his personal wallet. Now would be a good time to show a little maturity.

  • cliff henny

    Johnny Geagle….C Graham to Bills

    • oreofestar

      ouch

    • http://batman-news.com theedevilsadvocate

exactly who i thought of when i read it. lol when’s the draft again?

      • cliff henny

        not soon enough

    • Adam G

Certainly got paid handsomely. That type of contract was def not in Howie’s plan for an average corner.

      • oreofestar

        what did he get?

        • Adam G

          4/16

          • oreofestar

NO THANK YOU at that price

  • http://batman-news.com theedevilsadvocate

that graham cat from the ravens supposedly signed with the bills.

  • jabostick

Uh oh. GEagle on suicide watch…

  • Adam G

    Aaaaand Neal off the board.

    • oreofestar

      where did he go?

      • jabostick

        Gbay resigned him

        • oreofestar

aaaah and where are you getting the updates I am going to a few sights but not getting it as fast

          • jabostick

Saw Jeff McLane retweet it (from Neal himself)

  • oreofestar

Just remember we did not sign Graham because of Revis I gotta keep telling myself that

    • phillyphanlvnv

Why do so many people still bring up Revis. As if there is really a snowballs chance in hell.

      • oreofestar

let me believe… I know chances are slim but at least they called Revis that is more than we can say for some other guys

  • oreofestar

I know it will never happen but I was just thinking about if we stole Jimmy Graham and how ridiculous our offense would be..

    • Stuart Philp

The Saints might want that now with all their cap issues… I wish

  • oreofestar

lol what if the Broncos aint done and they get Revis

    • RIP illa

Happy landing O. Pats got your boy Revis!

  • Token

Funny to watch the Philly media spin all this. Tuned into Daily News Live or whatever the hell they call it now. Moser falling over himself to blow the move of Jenkins. Saying how reliable hes was in NO. WTF are people watching? Let alone, all you have to do is look into the numbers. The guy is in the bottom of the league.

Myths McLane took to twitter to say how Davis scheme doesnt need shut down corners to get people to stop bringing up Revis.

Well, ok but if it doesnt require corners and it doesnt require safeties WTF does it require? They dont seem to value pass rush much either since we are gonna trot Connor Barwin and Trent Cole back out there in 2014.

I have a feeling that 2014 will expose Davis for the boob most of us knew he was from the start.

    • NickS1

Kempski’s article about the context of Jenkins’ numbers was a joke, too. Some dude tried defending it to me. Laughed in his face.

      • Token

Saw it. Its retarded to be honest.

And I really wish people would stop bringing up that Jenkins was a corner out of Ohio State. I mean damn it makes you look moronic. As if that means anything.

      • JReamer

        A joke how?

        • NickS1

Volume doesn’t justify mediocre play. He was trusted by Rob Ryan, which, given the 103.3 passer rating into his cover, was misplaced. I’m willing to see what he does for us, but in no way has anything he done up to this point warranted the label “upgrade.”

          • JReamer

I think it’s most definitely an upgrade. Chung was just awful. Of course I don’t see him as the safety savior, however I easily take him over Allen and Chung.

          • NickS1

An upgrade over Chung? Yeah, he was only starting because Wolff got hurt, so comparing a starting FS to our 3rd safety last by noting that Chung can’t cover doesn’t really constitute songs of praise. He and Allen? A coin-flip. Allen improved enough this year that Jenkins is by no means a clear upgrade.

          • JReamer

Chung was the starter until he got hurt. I guess as far as upgrade goes we’ll see.

          • NickS1

Wolff was taking his snaps by the time he went down. The games referenced in the article are after Wolff got hurt.

          • anon

Stop gap, there must be a couple of college kids they like a lot. But our db evaluation is pretty bad.

          • Token

Yea is Chung actually better than numbers show because he had to go against WRs in the slot sometimes? Its a ridiculous argument.

  • Token

Geez I can feel the hate before I even say it….

But at this point if the Jackson rumors had any truth, id trade him. IF they can get some kind of good value pick wise.

Reason: The Eagles are clearly building for years down the road. Jackson wouldnt be here by the time they are actually going to be contending anyway. Extract value now.

The Peters signing makes less sense too when you look back. When it happened I thought it signaled they were really gonna push for it in 2014 and 2015. Not the case.

    • Joe Thomas

Good, let the hate flow through you

    • Uncle Wonder

      They are contending now

      • anon

For what? You think we can win a playoff game in the nfc?

        • Uncle Wonder

You’re overreacting. Take a deep breath. I know theres a lot of frustration so I wont try to make you feel better about it but im trynna look at it rationally. We are one day into FA. Haven’t even had a draft or minicamp or training camp or preseason and youre projecting the playoffs? Maybe we will win the SB…maybe we will go 4-12 again. Youre gonna sit and watch the games just like i am so we might as well wait and see and stop trynna predict the future

      • Token

For the cap bowl? For a division title? Who cares?

  • All Things Bad@ss

Wanna make yourself feel better after the past few days? Talk to a Raiders fan. Here in LA I have them readily accessible, so I’m feeling pretty good right about now

  • bad news

Revis signs one yr with pats for 12 mill. ouch

  • Guest

The Pats can suck a fat one!!…Howie you better hit a homerun on every pick in the draft this year..I still kind of hope we sign Thurmond or even Cromartie

    • anon

Yeah I know, pats go get guys. But whatever more money for the owner. No wonder they didn’t renegotiate djax

      • Adam G

Eagles used up almost all their cap last year. IF they have money left over they will just carry it over. Lurie won’t keep it. Also, Pats have reputation of not getting guys. Look at their offense.

  • ReggieWhite

Whats the point of having cap space if you dont wanna spend?

  • ReggieWhite

I dont believe this nonsense of Press Corners dont fit our scheme. If anything it would benefit Davis and his blitzes he likes to throw. Zone coverage is just plain garbage to cover up the fact we have sub par defense.

  • oreofestar

I do not know what to feel anymore…

  • HarmsWay

I know most people on this board will disagree with me and while I realize the Birds still need to upgrade their D, I think the view that “the sky is falling” is an over reaction. I agree that Howie better kill the draft but I’m in the camp that believes the best way to build a championship team is through the draft and not free agency. The year the Eagles went hog wild and built the “Dream Team” Giants fans were blasting their GM and they ended up winning it all that season while the Eagles were horrible. I’ll wait until after the draft to generate my opinion of the off-season moves the Eagles have made and the strength of their roster going in to next year.

    • oreofestar

Yep lets sit at 22 hope a great player gets to us and sit on our $20mil in cap space, at least we got an average safety ad 2 special teams players I guess, not even being sarcastic

      • HarmsWay

I hear ya but the other thing to consider is that we aren’t privy to everything that’s happened behind the scenes. For all we know, the Eagles could have made offers to certain players and were either outbid or the players they wanted didn’t want to come to Philly.

      • Aussie Eagle

We are at the beginning of building a championship quality team. This takes time. We have a young QB that we can build around. Teams like Broncos and Saints have ageing QB’s, the next couple years are their last chance at glory, so of course they are going all in. Fast forward three years and tell me which team you would rather be supporting.

        • oreofestar

I would rather be supporting the Eagles regardless this is my team and I love them, hopefully Jenkins turns out well because we need him too

        • phillyphanlvnv

Rather be the Seahawks fan. I was telling people about them two seasons ago when they got Wilson. They play Incredible football up there, something that quite frankly DOES NOT happen in this city. Our Offense is NOT EVEN COMPETING with that Seattle team, and the proof will be left on the field when they travel to Philly to show the city how football is REALLY played nowadays.

          • Aussie Eagle

Haha loving the optimism! Eagles’ Offense is hands down better than Seattle’s, the big difference is that Defense.

Seattle D in 2010 (Carroll’s first year) was giving up 25.4 PPG and 368.6 YPG. Through mostly better acclimating players to the scheme and building through the draft, they are where they are today!

Eagles D first year of Chip, 23.9 PPG and 394.2 YPG. Let’s give Chip’s Eagles a bit of time before we give out our grades?

    • Eagledan

Stop Talking Sense. There will none of that on this board.

      • HarmsWay

Sorry. Don’t know what I was thinking.

    • anon

Enough with the dream team honestly. Whole organization wad a mess. You can’t take the organization seriously when your dc is the o line coach. Andy wasted all that $$.

We have no pro bowlers on d. Name one sb team or sb calibur team w no pro bowlers on d.

We have 2 needs safety and olb. Well have to try to get them in the draft.

    • DC

A voice of reason…how refreshing. Honestly, I think we are all just starved for football action and wanted some excitement. Hard to blame, but patience is key and we are definitely a team on the up and up, regardless of how much or little we spend in the first 48 hours of FA. This is just Example #12983412 of Eagles fans being reactionary.

    • Token

This is where people get confused or think they are making some big counter argument.

EVERYONE wants to build thru the draft. Not a single poster here doesnt want that. Its not a new idea. We all want that.

However, track records show this team doesnt find many pro bowl level players in the draft. And they are usually sitting on 20 mil in cap space.

So you are hoping against hope that they radically change their hit % in the draft. Ok I could see that point of view. But lets say that happens, even then your probably 3 years away from competing with that model. Because certain guys will need replaced by then in addition to your many current needs.

Thats why a number of us get a little upset when we see all these unused dollars on the cap, some impact players available, and watch the team instead sign more and more ST aces as if that makes a damn difference to anything.

The Eagles plan is always for the future. Im tired of the maybe next year pitch personally.

      • Uncle Wonder

Well we should wait til probably Friday to evaluate…last year it took a couple days and clearly its the same this year as far as when Howie will start making moves. The big money players are outta the way so now we get the players who hoped to strike it rich but didnt. I expect a few impact signings starting tmrw. Not top shelf but starting caliber.

        • phillyphanlvnv

Ummm, no. Howie made ALL his moves by this point in FA. He signed Conner Barwin which WAS his big move. Jenkins IS IT. Maybe the Eagles bring in another player who can compete to start, but the team should have been looking for more than someone to COMPETE with talent on an OVERACHIEVING 29th ranked D.

          • Uncle Wonder

Barwin didnt get signed the 1st day…it was a cpl days in…then CW and Fletcher…Casey, who didnt really work out. There are players still out there, idk if we will get any but i think the price point is where Howie wants it to be for his FA philosophy

          • oreofestar

They were all 1st and 2nd day guys and they all ended up being average pieces to our 29th ranked D

          • Uncle Wonder

We had a brand new D made up of mismatched players from the prior regime. the roster has to get turned over, that is what is happening now.

          • oreofestar

Really so who were the mismatched players from OLD regime? Cole? Well who are we replacing him with no better LB than Cole are left in FA and Barr and Mack will be gone when we draft and if we are turning over the roster who are we getting they have done nothing to turn over the D this is the exact same D with no Allen or Chung and now Jenkins not that much better maybe we will be the 28th ranked D I can not wait for the draft lol

          • Uncle Wonder

Who would you have preferred from FA to replace Cole?

          • oreofestar

To be honest I was hoping for Ware and Johnson a bit but not really my thought was to get and impact player in the secondary which would help the front too and then get some good depth signings and then you could focus more on the front in the draft because you fixed the secondary but at this point I have no right to complain, I gotta just hope things start lookingbetter

          • Uncle Wonder

FA isnt over…there are players left to be had…who knows what will happen, lots of time left.

          • oreofestar

I agree, I am extremely disappointed but there is still hope to make this garbage D top 25

          • phillyphanlvnv

Uhhh, no dummy, turnover whould require LOTS of new faces. Not Mostly the same faces, with the exception of a few players that fans would have absolutely revolted if they brought them back. Fact is, Ryans still anchors our ILB, Cole is only getting older, and last time I checked, he was MANHANDLED by Tyron Smith and the rookie that the Saints had started. Kendricks is still TOO SMALL, and Jenkins is just BARELY better than Chung. While all these whackjob reporters wanna try to throw bs film and say stats are garbage, Chung WAS asked to do a lot of what Jenkins was asked to do, and THEY BOTH SUCKED. MIGHTEYLY!!! This team is fielding dreck with the HOPES that the Redskins are still snake-bit, and that the Giants WILL NEVER return to form. Would include the Cowboys but, as long as Tony Romo is their QB, they cannot even be mentioned as a team to compete for the division crown. This team has one of the most difficult schedules, and had it not been for us being gifted with the AFC South, we would have a for sure 4-6 win team on our hands. Might luck into 8-8.

          • Uncle Wonder

Dummy? lol, im not your dog…i guess we will see what happens.

          • oreofestar

How defense is barely better than last year which is a problem but there is still a chance we can improve with some give depth signings and maybe taking a flier on Cromartie and hoping the best for the draft

          • oreofestar

We will win the division because it is so bad, We can win 4-5 division games we are better than every afc south team besides the Colts, Rams ad Cards are winnable but can not pencil those in as wins and between SEA, SF, GB and CAR I say we get lucky and win one we ge to 10-6 and a first round exit…

        • oreofestar

The Barwins and Carys are gone already Howie made his big moves already its done

        • phillyphanlvnv

Just like the clown who says we should wait until July. By then, we will get to get all pumped up watching our draft picks highlight reels, and youtube clips. Dave Spadaro will tell us all how great the team looks going into the season, the fans will begin to chime in with their “well, something just feels different about this season bs” and then the season will start, and come November, we will all be wishing for the same damn thing we had been wishing for the last 4+ years. Just wait a few more days. Just keep waiting til the roster is finalized. Just wait til next offseason. Just wait til next draft. This shit gots ta stop.

      • oreofestar

People need to realize we are not Seattle we do not draft defensive superstars and sometime you need to buy them

What is the team that is having all the amazing drafts then if not us? Sure you can cherry pick good players but does that team have some incredible body of work in the draft that shows them to be head over heels above every other team? The draft is an inexact science…there are literally a 1000 prospects who get funneled into 254 picks. Our new regime has done ok i think…make or break year for class of 2012 comin up.

        • oreofestar

Tell me the last time we drafted a pro bowler on defense

          • Uncle Wonder

Is that a real question? The answer isnt relevant to FA.

          • oreofestar

It is because we do not draft great defensive players and our defense really needs an impact player and history shows that is not coming in via draft

          • Uncle Wonder

When was the last time we won a SB? History says zero…maybe we shouldnt play anymore.

            slippery slope

          • oreofestar

I never said we should draft we should use the draft to supplement what we did in FA but we did nothing

          • Uncle Wonder

U gotta relax bro…spring is coming, our wives, girlfriends, and mistresses still love our dirty draws, football season starts in 6 mo…enjoy the ride.

          • phillyphanlvnv

You’re so right. We just have to wait til Training Camp. Just like fans of the Browns, Bills, Lions, Chargers, Vikings, Jags, Panthers… I remember when I used to be able to add the Seahawks and Saints to that list.

          • DC

They haven’t been to any Pro Bowls yet, but Boykin, Cox, Kendricks, and Thornton (undrafted FA, kinda counts) are solid pieces to build around. I’d say they all have Pro Bowl ceilings. Boykin most of all is a virtual lock to be a stud.

          • oreofestar

I really hope this draft rocks bro just so you know…

    • phillyphanlvnv

I hate how EVERYONE keeps bringing up the “Dream Team” when the Eagles had honestly made TERRIBLE decisions that entire offseason. From signing NA who played a position we ALREADY had a pro bowler, who actually played better, not only that year, but also the following year when we sent him off to ATL, but also the Danny Watkins mess. Getting rid of a DC who may turn out to be the next young stud DC in the NFL, and replacing him with a nice guy, but ultimately, someone in WAY over their head. Paying Vick that retarded 100 mil contract… the list goes on. We DO NOT have JPP, nor Osi nor Tuck, Rolle, Webster, Canty, and the rest. What the Giants had, as well as what the Seahawks have, is nowhere close to what the Eagles plan to put on the field next year.

      • HarmsWay

Point well taken but in hindsight (IMHO) it’s easy to see now how all of those offseason free agent signings a couple of years ago were horrible decisions but at the time I think a lot of us – my self included – thought it was going to be an unbelievable year. I’ve seen a lot of teams go after big time free agents year after year (e.g. the Redskins) only to end up maintaining their mediocrity. We’ve got a new coaching staff and a new approach that resulted in 6 more wins and a playoff appearance than the previous year so as previously stated I’ll wait until after the draft to make my overall judgment of how the offseason has gone. All that being said, I can certainly appreciate it if you disagree with my opinion.

        • oreofestar

People forget we had a super easy schedule last year the only good team we beat was Arizona at our current state we are going to get raped next year Look at Seattle, San Fran, Carolina, GB, IND we face them and they either really good or straight up stacked

        • phillyphanlvnv

Yea, we got to reverse the Redskins record (0-2 2012 2-0 2013), beat up on the Pack WITHOUT ARog, and the Boys without Romo. Quite frankly, the team I know we are closer to is the teams that showed up against both the Cowboys in the first game, and the game against the Vikings. A terrible D, who got by with the help of lucky TO that were created by players who have actually shown in their history of play that they do NOT create or force many TO. For Christ sake, Ryans actually got a few sacks and picks last year.

          • oreofestar

Thank you besides Arizona what quality opponent did we beat just average teams, teams with backups and then horrible teams

  • anon

Remember when we thought Howie was smoke screening about fa?

    • oreofestar

Yeah but the reason we heard no rumors was because Howie really wasn’t gonna do ANYTHING

    • phillyphanlvnv

Aaaaahhhh shiiiii….. Still LMAO at anyone who really thought Revis was coming when the truth was, the Eagles had ZERO interest in ANY free agents other than Jenkins, which is pretty alarming.

  • oreofestar

*SIGH* I am just so…..disappointed that is all I was really hoping the Eagles would just get that one impact player to help us get over the top Johnson, Byrd, Ware, Verner I mean someone but hey maybe the Eagles are gonna look into Decker or something I mean f*** defense right

    • Max Lightfoot

Not to make you feel even worse, but the Eagles’ 2013 defense played way, way over their heads the last half of the season, which misled a very excited, hopeful fan base to believe that they were actually halfway decent.

Billy Davis wrung every drop of effort from the players he had. But the reality is that the Eagles’ defense could be two more drafts away from being “one impact player” away. Then high-priced stars in free agency might make sense. And free agency has only started.

The good news is that the Eags have an innovative coach and drafted well in 2013. I think the 2014 draft will be even better, and will address defensive needs with the type of players that Billy Davis and Chip Kelly want.

I’m still optimistic about 2014. Go Eags!

      • knighn

What is depressing about the 2013 defense is that it pitched so few Three-And-Outs that our D actually ended up taking time away from our O. It’s been documented here already. The reason that the defense spent so much time on the field last season is the defense just couldn’t get off the field. The defense limited the big plays but couldn’t come up with quick stops and had incredible difficulty getting off of the field on third down. It was: let the opposing team get a first down, or a few first downs… or drive almost all of the way down the field… then, maybe, we’ll get a stop.

So… this saddens me. The Eagles offense might be damn good this year, but wouldn’t it be even better with an extra minute or two (at least) to play every game?! I think so!

I understand that completely rebuilding a team is a long process, but it is depressing to know, realistically, that the Eagles simply are not truly in the conversation with the best teams in the NFL. The Saints were tough last year. They got stronger. Same for the Broncos. The Seahawks will continue to be tough. Unless the 2014 Eagles do some amazing things with the rest of their off-season (remaining Free Agency and Draft) they are going to have some horribly eye-opening moments going up against the Seahawks, Saints and 49ers this year. Not to mention: we can’t count on the Packers to be without Aaron Rodgers again this season. Without significant improvement, we’re already looking at four (4) nearly automatic losses for the Eagles. Tough, tough schedule. Hopefully, between now and the season, the Eagles get much tougher. Your optimism is higher than mine for 2014. I’m staring to look forward to 2015.

        • Max Lightfoot

What gives me some hope is that the team seems to be buying into Chip’s system (although he keeps deflecting credit for it, saying it’s the Eagles’ system). They listen to him and believe in him. That alone can help them play over their talent level, to a point, and for awhile.

They will need to build the defense with the draft, and getting lucky with FA signings. And it’s gonna take 1-to-2 more years of both – if the FO is really and truly committed to doing this, and not just staying $20M under the cap every year.

But then again, the turnaround time from champs to chumps, according to NFL so-called insiders, is shorter than MLB or the NBA or the NHL.

          • knighn

I believe the defense played over their talent level last year. I don’t believe it is sustainable. While Boykin, Kendricks, Cox & Logan are young and may show improvement, the following will all be another year older:
Cole, Ryans, Barwin, Williams, Fletcher. As I said to ryyndynyyls: you can’t count on draft picks contributing much right away.

So right now, I’m looking at the Eagles as a virtual lock to lose these 4 games in 2014:
            Packers
            Saints
            Seahawks
            49ers

I also see the Colts as a likely loss, one division game as a likely loss, and a loss from somewhere else in the schedule. That puts the Eagles at 9-7 already. If the Eagles can make the playoffs with that record, they’ll have to face off (again) against one or more of the following:
            Packers
            Saints
            49ers
            Seahawks

That virtually guarantees an early exit for the Eagles if they make the playoffs. Chip Kelly is an excellent coach, but even he can’t spin straw into gold.

I do have hope for the future, but it sucks that the Eagles have already practically conceded the 2014 season.

        • ryyndynyyls

Agree on every count except for the Saints getting stronger. Bad culture moves and a lot of offensive pieces lost in order to break the bank on a Safety they arguably didn’t need and keeping a reluctant, now very unhappy Jimmy Graham. Saints are on the skids, but otherwise I completely agree.

When if not this Free Agency, are we going to grasp that Shady, Desean and others won’t be around forever? This could have been our moment. Unless we plan to strike gold with all 7 draft picks we are not in contention anymore.

          • knighn

Would have to strike platinum on those draft picks. Even draft picks that will eventually be All Pro don’t get there overnight and are very often NOT ready to play at a high level in their first year. For example: pass rushers often take until their third year in the NFL to become the beasts that they will eventually be. It just takes those guys a while to get accustomed to the size, speed, physicality and the smarts of the NFL.

  • oreofestar

Worse part is hings can actually get worse Howie could throw money at Ihedigbo’s 52 year old ass or that bum Clemons at this point if we are signing a safety I either want Nate back or Rafael Bush for dirt cheap

    • Rahkem

Clemons is a better safety than jenkins , he graded out pretty well in coverage

      • oreofestar

I would definitely take Jenkins over Clemons and I do not even like Jenkins

    • cliff henny

nawh, even though there’s 25-35m coming off books next year, current roster account for only 5m under(that’s assuming140m cap). we’ll see 3 or 4 guys, but only on a1 yr or the 2yr but get out for cheap in 2nd (the chung/casey special).

      • oreofestar

        who then?

        • cliff henny

no idea, see dl, og, cb vet signed…certainly nothing that’s going to move your meter. start your dream mock drafts

  • Harty17

Stop sugar coating this. This FA period is turning into a major disappointment for a team that still needs way too many impact players on defense to be legit contenders. We are no closer now then we were at the end of the season. Are we going to hit on 6 draft picks? 2? Roll the dice and good luck.

  • oreofestar

We should just sign Bush or Allen that would be cheaper than overpaying for a bum like Clemons or someone else, hopefully Carrington I would like him, Sproles would be nice and maybe if you wanna take a chance on Browner or Cromartie or see what you can get out of Thurmond

  • phillyphanlvnv

Who cares who else the Eagles bring in at this point. Only more ketchup on our Turd-burger. Only hope this team really has is if they somehow manage to pull off a major steal in the draft like a CJ Mosely to replace a Demeco Ryans, along with getting a Pryor or Gilbert. To do so would mean risking losing either a future 1st round pick(s), or an excellent player who the team suspects will soon not have the same level of production, that other teams covet… Problem is, the Eagles don’t have many if ANY of those types outside of Jackson, and I do not truly believe ANY team covets him enough to pass on either of the aforementioned players.

  • Neanderthal

Pats signing Revis might mean they are in same desperate position we where in a couple of years ago. Getting away from their way of doing things.

  • Sig

Who needs Defense when you need to stop McCoy and Sproles!!!! 50 points a game, no big deal.

  • Aaron Martinson

    Spfoles!
