Open Thread: Conference Title Games

We figure most of you are in front of a TV today for the conference championship games, so feel free to share thoughts and observations in the comments section below.

  • sdk152

Big miss in first quarter by Brady to Edelman. Also, my entire Twitter feed is people ripping Phil Simms. -SK

    • NickS1

That’s because Phil is what Allen would refer to as, “a ratard.”

    • GEAGLE

The play action pass? That was horribly overthrown…

Truth be told, I don’t care what the records say, or the injuries they had to overcome, IMO this was the worst year for Tom Brady that I can recall. He has looked horrible at times this year..which is why you really have to respect the job Bill Belicek has done this year…all the injuries, Brady having his worst year and they still managed to earn a first round bye”…. Impressive!!!

      • Andy124

Absolutely. Of course, the common refrain of Brady having no weapons to throw to this year rings true to me. They’ve drafted several receivers the last couple years but haven’t done well with that at all. Best looks like Dobson who Brady only had a 50% completion percentage throwing to this year. Maybe he’ll make a big leap next year.

        • GEAGLE

Not the best weapons, but he is still working with more then McNabb had for Half this career here and I don’t even like Donnie mc…

They got LUCKY as hell with Julian Edelmen replacing Welker and having a better year then Wes, but I won’t give Bellicek props for it because it was dumb luck. Bellicek planned for Amendola to replace Wes, and he ended up getting Lucky with Edelmen …
          .,,
While young FOles has been making all our past redzone struggles disappear, spreading It around to Coop,Ertz,Brent. Even managing to turn Desean into a redzone weapon..Brady has been flat out PATHETIC in the redzone these past two years…Throwing to anyone not named GRONK, Brady is on,y completing 27% of passes in the redzone. That’s really really bad. FOles wouldn’t even be our QB if he was playing that bad in the redzone…

I don’t know how much more talent Coop has then the weapons Brady is throwing it to…Brady no longer has an ELITE supporting cast of pass catchers in Wes, prison boy and fragile Gronk, but it’s not like he has a horrible WR corp either…i would call his weapons, middle of the pack caliber….Brady of the past could have made it work with these weapons, but his throwing has not been consistently up to par with classic Tom Brady…What’s,crazy is Tom tried to do the right thing, taking less money so they would pay Welker and he got screwed lol…Curious to see how that offense changes this summer…I do like the potential of kembrell and Dobson tho…although I wonder how different they would have looked had they been catching passes from say Christian Ponder..you have to think that the skill positions will get a makeover this offseason

Really like some of their pieces on defense tho. I really wanted us yo draft jamie Collins. Chandler Jones is a stud, then again who wouldn’t want the younger brother of the UFC LHW champ of the world…Always been an Aqib talib fan and an admirer of Wilfork..
          ..

      • NickS1

Worst passer rating since ’03. That said, if the worst year your QB has had in 10-11 years is 4300 yards, 25 TDs to 11 INts, you’re not doing that badly at the position. Remember how bad those drops were over the first few weeks?

        • GEAGLE

Yeah man, You are doing something right if This is a down year and you still get a first round bye…but they are going to have to upgrade his skill positions this year. I would be tempted to cut bait with Gronk. He is so damn unreliable and it’s only going to get worst
          ….
I’m happy for Peyton. Great guy, Great career..Not knowing if he comes back next year, I’m glad he didn’t lose today…and I wouldn’t mind seeing him get his second SUPERBOWL so I don’t have to keep hearing how that lucky Bum, Eli “Casey Mathews” Manning has more rings then Peyton..
          ..
Pot roast made some amazing plays today. Should have targeted him instead of RJF and Soap. We are Young enough at Dline to where we can afford to add a veteran presence…where as we have to get younger at certain positions like WR and OLB

      • anon

Saw a story that he suffered ligament damage. It’s amazing that they’ve been able to run over people all year this year.

      • Maggie

First round bye. It is something, but look at the rest of the division, too.

    • GEAGLE

Think Phil Simms has officially been added to my list of idiots who I would love to fight inside the UFC Octagon with Millions of people watching. The updated list goes:
      Dustin “Screech” Diamond
      P. Diddy
      Les Bowan
      Dirty Joe banner
      Phil Simms
      Phil from mount airy
      Tony bruno

    • Weapon Y

I think Phil Simms is a bottom 5 announcer. Not because he’s one of the 5 worst announcers. It’s because he’s going to be one of the most articulate guys you’ve ever heard, and what are you going to do argue with him? CBS, it’s going to be unbelievable. That’s all I’ve ever heard, and how’s it working out? Is it just the most unbelievable thing?

(By the way, he really is one of the 5 worst announcers).

  • NickS1

Wow, that pass Manning just floated to Welker…. Had Foles done that all we’d hear about is how the football gods are on his side.

    • sdk152

Great adjustment by Welker. Terrible throw by Manning.

      • NickS1

Agreed, Sheil. My point was that when Manning does it, “he got away with one.” When a 3rd round pick who no one believes is even close to as good as the numbers he posted does the same, he had the help of every football god, Greek/Roman god, pot of gold, etc on his side to make it happen.

        • Andy124

Brady held on to the ball, taking an 11 yard sack instead of throwing it away resulting in a 47 yard field goal. If he doesn’t eliminate those kinds of mistakes the Patriots are going to have to draft a new quarterback. ;)

          • NickS1

Well, at least their kicker can get them 3 from 47yds out.

          • GEAGLE

            Laces out marino

          • Chippah

That’s the worst case of hemmerhoids I’ve ever seen!

    • GEAGLE

If FOles over throws guys like Brady! we would be talking about drafting QBs right now

  • Justin

Let’s go to a commercial right when he starts walking off the field. If the NFL really wants to shorten games, they should cut down on the commercials.

    • NickS1

      If only…

      • Justin

Man, I almost lost it watching the Eagles-Saints game. Injury timeout at 2:08 left in the first half. Go to a commercial, come back, 8 seconds run off the clock, 2 minute warning commercials. I was furious.

        • NickS1

Haha I didn’t have that issue being at the game. Obviously the same time between game play, but at least no commercials. I recommend going if you live in the area. I might never go to a regular season game again.

          • Justin

I don’t. I live in Orlando, FL. I also had to get up for work at 4:30 the following morning. So I went to sleep at half time. I ended up waking up right at the start of the Saints final drive.

          • NickS1

            Ouch..

    • Maggie

Uhh. Who do you think pays for you to watch football? Agree on over-running playing time, but that is on the network usually.

  • Vabirds

Denver runs a pick on almost every pass play…never gets called for it. Welker almost killed Talib on a pick!

    • NickS1

NE has had one or two as well. Know what you mean, though. Reffing needs to change next season. It’s been inconsistent at best this year.

  • sdk152

This game feels like it’s headed towards a blowout (13-3 now). Feel free to throw this back in my face if New England comes back. -SK

    • Andy124

I think you might be safe Sheil.

    • Johnny Domino

If Denver doesn’t answer, you might have to sweat.

Wonder if Bill went to the videotape at the half.

    • GEAGLE

Nah you nailed it…maybe not a blow out, but at no point was Denver not in control

    • theycallmerob

You weren’t counting out touchdown tom, were you?

  • NickS1

Pretty certain that Phil Simms just said that Demaryius Thomas got hard before immediately correcting himself to saying he got hot. Freudian slip.

  • Andy124

Fun football game if you don’t have a rooting interest.

    • NickS1

Or if you’re rooting for Peyton

      • Andy124

That too. The Denver Peytons look pretty good.

        • GEAGLE

Happy for Peyton! especially since we don’t know if his body will let him play next year…and nothing makes me happier then continuing the “patriots can’t win since getting caught spying”!!!
…Pumped for this next game. I’m a shady Seahawks fan..although I also root for Navaro Bowman and the Niners front 7…everyone watch Donte Whitner closely…he could be an eagle

  • Andy124

    The Andy Reid play!

  • NickS1

I wonder how much Brady misses Welker. Has to kill him watching Welker catching passes for Manning as Manning torches the Pats’ D.

    • GEAGLE

Lol especially since he took a pay cut so that the pats would keep Wes..hahhahahahaha..if the saints don’t franchise Jimmy Graham, I have a feeling the pats will bid on him hard!!

  • anon

    drc looks good :(

    • GEAGLE

DRC is good!! With him it’s all about Charecter and personality. when he left Arizona ken Wisenhunt said that he was a talent and hoped he would get it together with a change of scenery..unfortunately we were a joke, our defensive coaches were a mess and DRC and some other guys quit on the team..as talented as he was! he was forced to sign a one year deal because he Is a HEADCASE that no one trusted…well Denver was one of the best things that could have happened to him. A contender with veterans like Peyton and champ Baily that everyone respects,..they also have Ron Meeks a secondary coach that’s not to be F’ed with…like he would have no problem benching DRC in a heartbeat during the SB if DRC doesn’t bring it…
      ..
DRC had a nice year, really curious to see what type of contract he signs in march. talented as they come. wonder if this year was enough for a team,to commit to him Longterm?

  • ia

So now we know, an average of 24 points is enough to move on to the next round. That’s what the Eagles did. They just need a defense that can keep the other team under it.

    • GEAGLE

24 was always the number..your defense held team under 23, what was it? 10 of the last 11 games? Gave up 26 in the playoffs while Alex Henrey left 3 on the field?

  • Johnny Domino

Looks like Ann Wilson has dropped some lbs, good for her. She was up to about 2/3 of Heart, now she’s back down to about half.

    • GEAGLE

She looks like the pet of danaerys stormborn Targaryian

  • GEAGLE

Lol,Russel Wilson fumbling to start the game. Why didn’t he throw it away? It was a rollout bootleg so he was,out of the pocket, he could have thrown it away. The announcers woulda crucified him of his name was, foles

    • Maggie

Did he have time to actually do anything?

  • GEAGLE

I knew Kapernick was running it on 3rd down. Harbaugh called a draw. Neither he nor kAp had confidence letting kAp throw it on 3rd down…BIGTIME victory for the Seahawks holding them to 3 after Wilson’s bonehead play…
    ..
After a year of Cole and Graham, watching Aldon smith is painful,,,,,seriously, Navaro Bowman might be the best player in this game. I’m still in pain over not having Kiko alonso

    • George

after watching russel wilson extensively, FOles is the best 3rd round qb from that draft maybe even the best young qb in nfc. On luck’s level

      • BrickSquadMonopoly

I like the confidence but its a reach. Wilson is the truth.

  • Andy124

    Text book launching.

    • theycallmerob

At least Foles throws to WRs

  • Token

Just watch Bowman and Willis. It doesnt get any better at LB.

    • George

      I wish…

    • theycallmerob

I particularly enjoyed that big sack of wilson by Bowman.
These QBs are a step down from the earlier game

      • Maggie

Just hope Bowman is alright. Able to fully recover.

  • Token

Kaep is gonna get rocked eventually. Now looking to run as soon as hes at the end of his drop

    • Media Mike

Yes, that style of play is garbage football. Wilson will keep his eyes downfield to try to complete a throw as he evades pressure. Kaep simply stops reading and looks to run.

  • Andy124

Didn’t look like a td to me, but I don’t think replay can overturn it. With the way Sea plays, no guarantee 49ers would convert if they went for it on 4th. Could be a huge missed call there.

    • GEAGLE

      Looks short

      • Andy124

Well, pretty much everything I said (except it not being a touchdown in the first place) was wrong. lol

  • Dr Rick

Joe Buck and Troy Aikman: the worst announcing combination on TV. I listen, and understand the words, but find zero insight or meaning.
    Is it just me?

    • George

NO. They should be banned from announcing football by the fcc

  • George

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 22: Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo (A)
Round 2 Pick 22: Deone Bucannon, SS, Washington State (A)
Round 3 Pick 22: Dominique Easley, DT, Florida (A)
Round 4 Pick 22: Brandon Coleman, WR, Rutgers (A)
Round 5 Pick 22: Antone Exum, CB, Virginia Tech (B+)
Round 5 Pick 29: Andrew Jackson, ILB, Western Kentucky (A-)
    Round 7 Pick 22: De’Anthony Thomas, RB, Oregon (B)

I was fooling around with the draft simulator, and I got this. I would be ectatic if this were to happen.

    • Rahkem

I want Deanthony im willing to take him alot earlier maybe 3rd or 4th round. We need a kick return guy , brad smith isnt a threat to score. Plus Thomas can play in the slot and run those option plays Desean runs allowing desean to atract defenders on the outside while still getting the same effect with thomas going one way and mccoy the other.

      • George

Agreed. But if this happened, i’d be drooling

        • anon

Pac 10 is kind of weak. I’d take te or secondary but who else from Pac10 is ballin? Why waste a 5 on dat when you can get a proven guy with a reasonable deal? Fa is full of return guys.

      • GEAGLE

I’m not so sure you would even have to consider drafting him before round 5. We have two 5th rounders so if Chip wants to reach for dat with one of the pics so be it. Hopefully he just uses a 5th as an Oregon special lol…Trade back like 12 spots, draft DAT, get a 6th round pick that lands you Colt Lyeria ..

        • George

We will then have the all- pac 12 nfl team…Lyerla, DAT, Ertz, DeSean, FOles…the rest of the league can have all the other confrences, we’ll just snipe all the best pac12 playersand win a sb with them…Byrd is a pac 12 guy also

    • GEAGLE

Walking away with Mac daddy would make the draft an automatic A plus..
      ..
I have Buchanon as the 3rd rated safety behind Pryor and HaHa so getting him at 22 in round two would be awesome..(I don’t count Joyner as a safety)

I like Easley, and I would be excited if our coaches believed they could turn Coleman’s raw talent into a potent NFL weapon, but if we were fortunate enough to fill OLB and safety with tremendous talent like Mack and Buchanon, then I’d be real tempted to draft WRs in rounds 3 and 4. Coleman would be great talent for round 4, but I think there will be some serious WR fall into round 3. I also think Dline is one of the positions where we are young enough and I would rather add a veteran presence then another rookie..
      ..
I like Easley a lot, but walking away with something like
      Mack Truck
      Buchanon
      Jarvis Landry
      Coleman
Would be a nasty compliment to Desean!Coop and Ertz
      ..
Like Exum and Jackson..but I hope we trade back at some point to aquire a 6th round pick that we use to ensure we get Colt Lyeria..Crazy TE talent for a 6th rounder if we can keep him away from rehab and camera phones. If Chip wants DAT. Then he should have him!!

  • Nick

    Bjergsen’s leblanc is terrifying though

  • Andy124

    Seattle’s first lead.

  • JK

1st thought……What a titty baby Harbaugh is? who roots for this guy? 2nd thought….i like Foles but i thought we needed a more mobile qb. but these two qb’s are not good passers. at all!

    • Maggie

I do believe these guys will become better passers with more time. And coaching.

  • Explorer51

Kaepernick is exciting but he is an ACL tear waiting to happen.

  • TXEaglesFan

Wow that injury to bowman looked terrible. Hope he can recover and play again. Reminded me of Leonard weaver.

    • Media Mike

That really sucked. Bowman is the man. He’s a 100% class player from a 100% class background. He was also the main Niner to tell that dope Kaep to stop wearing hats from other NFL teams.

  • Kev_H

I’d love to see you guys treat us by watching the All-22 and giving Kaepernick and Wilson the “Foles treatment” this week.

    • Andy124

SF should probably hope that Manziel drops to them.

  • Token

    Good game.

But watching those two offenses is tough. Neither is very good. I maintain that neither QB is very good. Granted, tough Ds.

Seattle damn near let the game get away because the offense could do nothing with those last two possessions.

At the end of the day, like I thought, Seattle wasnt letting the gifts Kaepernick gives you roll through their fingers.

I suspect that 49ers fans are in for years of disappointment with that kid. Hes quite similar to Vick. He will make just enough highlight plays to stay relevant. But in the end hes not gonna get it done for ya. Makes bad decisions. And just isnt a very accurate thrower. Looks to run after one read.

I think Denver wins fairly handily IMO. Seattles D is great. But I think Manning and that offense will figure out how to put points up. Wilson and that offense will struggle to stay in the fight.

Always great to see Harbaugh go down.

Also, who would ever want to interview either teams OC for a HC gig?

    • anon

Agree. Always thought Seattle couldn’t hold up in a shootout. Denver will run the ball. Both qbs are young but agree they need to spend a lot of time with a passing coach.

      • Andy124

I haven’t quite gotten over taking stud defenses over stud offenses in championship games. Maybe I’m just old. I could definitely see Seattle’s physicality taking the entire Denver offense off their game and pulling out the win.

It’s a coin toss game to me. Don’t forget, the Super Bowl is an outdoor night game in New Jersey in February this year. Theoretically, that would favor Seattle big time.

        • Maggie

If you were old, you’d remember when defense won many, many games. when defenders could actually hit. Legally.

          • Andy124

I remember Buddy Ryan. I’d say that qualifies. :)

          • Maggie

Well, you had to have SOME offense. Old? depends on day of the week. ; D

          • Andy124

Besides, if you’re only as old as you feel, I’m probably older than you lol.

        • anon

i think denver can score on SEA, i don’t think SEA can score points without benefiting from TOs.

    • theycallmerob

Nailed the Vick bit…the game-ending pick reminded me of 2010

      • Andy124

Eh, I think Keap is putting more effort in to improving, has better coaching and weapons to work with. I’d give well over 50% odds that he has a much better career than Vick.

        • Media Mike

          I don’t see that improvement.

          • Andy124

Time will tell. I’m certainly not offering any guarantees.

        • NickS1

I agree with that. Doesn’t seem to be the a-hole Vick was when he came out.

    • Media Mike

Correct Mr. Token. Guys like Kaep will always throw a game away. I’m hoping the league catches on and stops looking to add RG3&10 and Kaep type guys as their quarterbacks. I’d hate to have the NFL ruined by having more teams looking for the next scramble bum instead of the next Peyton or Brady.

      • Andy124

While I totally agree that teams that focus on a QBs athletic ability and ignore their shortcomings in the passing game, or just assume that they can “coach up” anybody with a surplus of physical talent will continually suffer, I do think there were pretty valid reasons to believe Bob Griffin could be a very good passer of the football, and Collin has flashed passing skills at times. Both of those guys are still too young to write off any progress they may make.

        I’d still take Foles.

        • Media Mike

Yes, I’d take Foles. And these scramble bums make the game unwatchable and they’ll never pass accurately until they stand tall, set their feet, and deliver the football.

        • anon

sophmore year is the hardest, i thought kap was a decent passer last season?

  • JReamer

Is that Sherman guy a thug or what. I’ve never seen a more classless reaction to winning a Conference Championship.

    • anon

When you have a goal line pick to win the game after all that talk you can do what you want. And while he’s dom south central he graduated from stanford so you tell me

      • Andy124

Yeah, but he didn’t have the pick so he should shut up.

I kid. I pretty much just tuned him out. Unless he said something offensive I couldn’t care less if he’s yelling about being the best.

        • Maggie

Sherman is usually good natured about trash talking, so Crabtree must have said something really obnoxious.

      • NickS1

I generally don’t care much for the extras, but if Crabtree was, in fact, running his mouth about Sherman, Sherman 100% earned every right to put Crabtree in his place. You don’t run your mouth about the best corner in the game if you aren’t even a top 10 receiver.

    • Media Mike

No, the classlessness is San Fran. Bicep kissing QB, histrionics from the coach, etc. I’m dying to know what Crabtree had to say.

      • Maggie

It would be interesting because Sherman is usually running his mouth, but with humor.

  • Media Mike

A massive victory for truth, justice, and the American way! How great to see Russell Wilson calmly and with poise figure out a professional mixture of scrambling and throwing while working his way through a game vs. a tough D. I enjoy seeing QBs play the game the right way. Thankfully Kaepernitwit will be sitting at home. As a lesson to the world on Quarterbacking, this scramble bum type play is a complete and total dead end as evidenced by the following stat line – 153 passing yards, 1 TD, 3 turnovers, and a 54 passer rating.

But everybody tell me again how guys like Kaep, RGKnee, and Manziel are the future of the league. Nobody wants to see the NFL ruined by this garbage.

Good to see that a class act like Wilson is moving on. I love watching that kid play the right way.

    • Maggie

You do know that the guy who first dreamed up Superman was a Canadian, now didn’t you? Also, according to the announcers, Kaepernick was told to run more.

      • Media Mike

Dumb by the coaches then, He cannot make accurate throws because he never chooses to set his feet in the manner needed for regular accuracy.

      • Kev_H

That’s his best bet because he isn’t beating anyone with his passing game.

        • anon

running is probably smart against the best secondary in the league. you think nf would have a clean game against their secondary? you think djax would outplay sherman?

          • Kev_H

Foles would be okay since he doesn’t stare down his receivers nor is he limited to one read. On NFL Network they said Seahawks strategy was to force Kaepernick left and wait for the mistakes. That strategy wouldn’t work against Foles.

  • Maggie

Said last week Eagles should look at golden Tate in FA. Didn’t see anything in today’s game to change my mind.

    • Andy124

Well, he did look pretty goofy when he was stalking around after he had nearly cost his team a first down by going backwards after he’d made the line to gain. :)

      • Maggie

Yes, but made effort, made catches, took hits, and punt returned. I’ve never forgotten him fighting half a dozen Packers for that touchdown during officials strike. No matter if it was called incorrectly, or not, it was an amazing effort.

    • Media Mike

He’d be a solid # 2 and most likely cost a fair bit less than a guy like Decker.

  • NickS1

I’d love a secondary of Cary Williams and Richard Sherman. I think they’d push each other so much being the proud competitors they are.. But, could you imagine the soundbites?

  • ia

Pocket passer, 24 points, no TO’s and a defense that can keep the other team under 24 is all you need. Eagles are almost there.

    • anon

      RW is a pocket passer?

      • Kev_H

He’s a game manager who takes his shots here and there, though he was shaky on ball exchanges too.

  • anon

Sherman on the last play of the game.

Well, I’m the best corner in the game!” Sherman shouted. “When you
try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree that’s the result you’re
gonna get! Don’t you ever talk about me!”

“Who was talking about you?” Andrews asked.

“Crabtree! Don’t you open your mouth about the best! Or I’m gonna shut it for you real quick!”

  • Will

Defenses Win Championships….this is fitting #1 Defense vs #1 Offense for the Super Bowl….
