Eagles Still Prepping For Romo

bill-davis-talking-using-hands-940x540
The Tony Romo report broke late Monday afternoon. As word leaked into the NovaCare that Dallas’ starting quarterback could miss Sunday night’s game with a back injury, the Eagles had to modify their approach. But it wasn’t as if they just started ripping up the game plan. In fact, they are still preparing as if Romo will start for the Cowboys.

“It really wasn’t Earth-shattering,” said Davis. “Most of the time when injuries happen early in the week, [the reaction is] not that drastic because  there is still a possibility he’s playing. Now, do we say, ‘OK, let’s take maybe a longer look at Kyle Orton?’ Absolutely. That’s probably the biggest shift, we may have to play a different guy, but we’re going to prepare for their offense and all their weapons. He’s one man of 11 out there — he’s the main guy, but he’s also a guy we’ll prepare equally for.”

ESPN is reporting that Romo will miss the rest of the season with a herniated disc in his back.  Ed Werder added this on Tuesday:

Dallas owner Jerry Jones said on his radio show that Romo has not been ruled out for Sunday's game, and is going through treatment with the hopes of being healthy enough to play on Sunday night. The cloudier the Cowboys can make the situation, the better from a strategical standpoint. Suggesting that Romo may still start could be pure gamesmanship. The Eagles are prepping for Romo just in case.

"You always prepare for their starters to start and be at their best, and from there you work," said Davis. "This week we'll say, 'OK, let's put a lot of emphasis on Orton as the backup because we know it's a proposition that we have no control over, we have to be prepared for both.

"I don't think the offense changes too much with one or the other. We're prepared for both of them and we're prepared to get the Dallas Cowboys' absolute best no matter who is at quarterback."

The Eagles have to guard against overconfidence in this spot. As we saw in the Minnesota game, even a down-on-their-luck team operating without their star player can be a handful if you're not sharp.

"I think we learned a valuable lesson against Minnesota and it's fresh in our mind," said Davis. "Not that we took them lightly but we know we have to step up no matter who plays. It has to be at our absolute peak."

Jerrah simply watched the 5 sacks we laid on Cutler and sent word that he didn’t feel like possibly paralyzing Romo. Birds 40-10.

    • George

I agree. Jerrah also wants another excuse to keep his puppet-i mean head coach- around another year

  • bushisamoron

Punch them in their f**king mouths. Channel your inner Weapon X. Thats my advice.

    • GEAGLE

Love it when you talk dirty!! Music to my ears :)

  • Token

Nobody is playing with a known herniated disc. That can be very dangerous. Its possible for it to damage your spinal cord. The repair surgery itself can be dangerous.

  • GEAGLE

What a treat: everytime I turn on Sport center these days I catch a Nick FOles press conference…it’s amazing how much this kid gets it,…after a decade of Mcnabbs passive aggressive, never take responsibility, poor persecuted Donovan, this kid is just a treat.
    ..
Donovan: “look at those 10 banners(division banners hanging from the rafters) and understand WE put 6 of them up there lol…#5 will always love you” hahahahah
    ..
I get this feeling that Nick won’t be pointing at this division title like he just won a SUPERBOWL…takes a tough fearless kid to be successful in this city, and I view him as everything philadelphia has always wanted!!!
    ..
Just got done watching Skip Bayless say that he still doesn’t believe in Nick Longterm, but that he views Johnny Manziel as a franchise QB…..SMH SMH SMH

    • George

Skip bayless is just a butthurt cowgirls fan who is holding out hope that FOles flops

      • OregonDucker

I want to see his comments after a 60+ beat down. After Foles eviscerates his Cowgirls. After Shady rips them apart. After Curry smashes their QB into the turf!

We’re from Philly and we fight!

      • GEAGLE

+1 for spelling it FOles lol

        • Justin W

          I don’t get it. “FOles”?

    • cliff henny

great, think Bayless, if not 100% is in the high 90′s, at always being wrong. used to like stephen a smith, but he got to wrapped up in skip’s craziness. SAS seems alot better lately mostly cause skip is getting worse and smith can be more logical.

    • morgan c

Ya, McNabb was a bit difficult and loved to play victim, but it’s kind of hard not to when he is booed on draft day and the fan base never truly accepted him. Foles is playing great and I love the guy. Very much hope he can be our future. But McNabb was an outstanding quarterback for our team for a long time. Let’s not compare the two. Nick has a LONGGGGGGGG way to go.

  • pjcostello

Unfortunately, they ARE two different QBs with diffferent styles and strengths, and should be game-planned for separately. Romo can escape the pocket, so the rush LBs need to make sure they don’t go too wide; Romo has a good, strong arm, and can throw the ball downfield. Orton is a pocket passer whom you would rush differently, and Orton does not have a strong arm — the underneath throws and running game will be far more prevalent with him at the helm.

That said, I do believe in Billy Davis and the Eagles, and I am certain they will be ready to play on Sunday night. :-)

    • GEAGLE

Nope…if Romo can gut it out and play, he won’t have his mobility…just like when he played with the punctured lung…
      ..
Typically when you play romo, you have to worry about containment, and being sound in your rush lanes…if he plays this week, he will have to sit in the pocket like Orton….game planning for the type of QB we play this week doesn’t mater…

      • pjcostello

        I hope you’re right!!!!

        • GEAGLE

First of all, he isn’t playing…it’s just grasping at straws, pathetic gamesman ship by Dallas…Did you see romo hobble around against Skins? If by some miracle romo is able to get on the field and gut it out! I don’t see how he can possibly be mobile to where we have to worry about containment

          • OregonDucker

Cox, Cole, and Curry will not be kind to Romo’s back. Big mistake to put your franchise at risk against these killers.

    • Will

If I could pick the QB to play I would go with Orton..wasn’t he with Chicago a few years back?

      • pjcostello

Chicago, Denver… he was 6-0 with Denver, then slid, and eventually lost the job to Tebow.

        • GEAGLE

Wasn’t he on the skins? Or was that his twin, Rex grossman?

          • pjcostello

No — Bears, Broncos, Chiefs, Cowboys. He and Grossman were on the Bears together, though.

  • Will

Another possible unknown QB to face…Kyle doesn’t inspire much of a threat…well for all the Marbles Chip bring your A game and jump out with a lead and keep pouring it on till the final whistle….Go Eagles!

  • GEAGLE

What does it mean to prepare for romo? He is a pocket passer, what’s their to specially prepare for? Lol…you prepare to stop Skill players or to slow down and scheme star defenders…QBs have the ball every play, unless it’s some freak mobile QB, you don’t have to prepare for anything unusual…

Whether Romo plays or doesn’t play, he won’t be running around, making plays with his legs..When you face a mobile QB, you “prepare” to contain, maybe you spy him…If Romo plays, he won’t be as mobile…you won’t have to worry about spying or containing him, so game planning for a hobbled Romo will be similar to how you would game plan for Orton….of course you can look at tendencies for each QB, who he likes throwing it to the most, what types of routes is he most comfortable with….Romo leans HEAVILY on Witten and Dez….I think it’s a safe bet, that Orton will also be looking at those two when he drops back…Orton has thrown 15 passes in the last two years, so you aren’t going to have enough of a sample size to look for tendencies

romo would, at times try to do something spectacular because he feels he needs to go win the game..at times it will lead to big plays, other times it leads to big turnovers..Orton isn’t going to try and win the game. He will be focused on taking care of the ball, not making mistakes, and get the ball in the hands of skill players so they can win the game..

The DANGER this week is NOT game planning for the wrong QB..the danger is the Human nature, psychological aspect of facing an inferior back up, leading to letdown performance, We didn’t lose to the Vikings because our players played their best and our gameplan was just horribly wrong..Vikings didn’t beat the best Jason peters! the best Shady McCoy, the best Cary Williams……sure we made some schematic mistakes like not giving the ball to shady and letting them start each drive at the 40….but the main reason we lost that game was mental. We did t respect their backups enough to bring our sharp A game…the Vikings didn’t beat anything close to the best the eagles have to offer. game planning for the right QB this week means nothing!
    ..
This week isn’t about our opponent. We are the BETTER team, we are the Hotter team. Their QB means NOTHING. This is about US….if we don’t have that disrespectful emotional letdown this week and we BRING IT, play Sharp, inspired football and Execute..the division is OURS!!!
    ..
romo isn’t even playing. This is just pathetic gamesmanship, grasping at straws by Dallas trying to waste our time on someone who won’t play. We ARE the BETTER coached TEAM!!!! Our inside linebacker coach, Minter who is only responsible for two players is a better football Coach then Jason Garrett!!! I swear I think we have about 5 coaches on our staff that could do a better job then Jason Garrett lol..game planning for the QB really doesn’t matter…it’s all about bringing our A game..

And not for nothing, but we just got our asses kicked by a backup QB in Minnesota two weeks ago. It’s a DO or DIE game against our most HATED rival, who caused us a lot of drama this year by beating us in FOles ANOMOLY game….if we have an emotional let down because romo doesn’t play when our entire season on the line, then we don’t deserve to go to the playoffs….

Fortunately I know we are a better coached team, I know we are a tougher team, more disciplined team, and we are playing the best football at the right time? Execute and get our revenge physically, and we won’t lose this game,…..
    ..
    42-20 Eagles

    • OregonDucker

62 – 10 Eagles. Duck precision and execution now bested by the Eagles!

      • GEAGLE

I said 42, because I was stopping when FOles gets pulled lol….it’s totally possible that Vick comes in and puts up another 20 :)

    • cliff henny

if anything, this gamesmanship will backfire. instead of just taking lumps and moving on, Dallas players will be watching and hoping to see Romo. it’s just stupid, epidural might mask some pain, reduce inflamation, but it wont get him to full strength (one report said in only public sighting he was limping horribly and could barely get into car). and to risk the guys long term health for a team not going anywhere. say he does play and they win, he isnt getting better. ridiculous risk to even consider playing him.

  • Johnny Domino

An injury payout might be a smarter move than letting him play out that dopey contract. Do the math and let him start.

    • cliff henny

guarenteed money counts against cap. they’d just have to ride it out, plus extend him after next season to get under cap for ’15. he’s Dallas’ starting qb thru ’19, destroyed back or not. might go down as one of the worst contracts in sports.

      • Johnny Domino

Knew it was bad, I guess in Texas even the mistakes are bigger.

        • cliff henny

the whole team’s cap is destroyed. Dallas is 20m over in ’14, takes 7-10m to sign pick, too. only guy in top 15 salaries that get them anywhere to cut is Ware, he clears 8m, but costs 8m in dead, and they’re already carrying over 11m dead. jones will have to restructure contracts and all this does is create more dead money down the road, and it’s not like he’s getting a 13-14 win team together.

          http://overthecap.com/teamcap.php?Team=Cowboys&Year=2014

  • Broadcasting Wisdom

Orton actually makes me more nervous than Romo. He can dink and dunk all the way down the field without getting impatient and going for a big play or scrambling around and taking a sack. Our defense usually doesn’t give up big plays, but as a result is vulnerable to the short game. I’m sure we’ll play Kendricks one on one against Witten, which could get ugly.

I still think we pull out the W, but our offense will have to score at least 24 points.

    • Will

Orton is a career back up for a reason…and not impressive at all…He played in a QB circus at Chicago a few years back…prone to throwing picks…The Redskins 3rd string QB beat him out…

      • Broadcasting Wisdom

Here is some wisdom broadcasted directly to you. Orton is not prone to throwing picks. In fact, he is tied for the 18th lowest interception rate of all time. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/pass_int_perc_career.htm. Second, I didn’t say he’s impressive. I said he can dink and dunk down the field. He throws the short ball very accurately and with anticipation. He does not throw the deep ball well, but our defense is susceptible to these short passes (see fellow career back-up Matt Cassell’s obliteration of our defense two weeks ago).

Our run D has got to come to play because Orton can be very efficient if it’s 2nd and 6 or 3rd and 2. But if we get them to 2nd and 9, 3rd and 8, he just doesn’t have the arm strength to fire the ball in there or the mobility to extend plays.

    • GEAGLE

Kendricks is balling the past 5 games, and we will see him on Witten, but Barwin will be on him a lot also..

none of are “brilliant philly media” lol has yet t figure out that the Eagles defense has developed a pretty nice “Quarter” package. Haven’t heard a single media member talk about the Quarter package that has really helped us out a ton against Arizona and Chicago…the “Quarter” package is what we use to Brackett cover two WRs….and our Brackett coverage has been spectacular…..Sunday, Cary was overtop Brandon Marshall, cutler tried too get it to him, but Wolff had an impressive PBU, undercutting the pass, getting us off the field on 3rd down…saw some really nice chemistry between Cary and Wolff bracketing Marshall, and you can tell that Cary really
Iiked Wolff by how happy he was for the kid..as opposed to the death stares Cary gives Chung..
      ….
if we get a nice lead on Dallas and they are forced to abandon the run, I wonder if we will use our Quarter package to bracket Dez and Witten?

  • Will

Is this another 8:30 night game in Dallas? If so I hate waiting all day for the one game I want to see…yup looked at the schedule….

    • G_WallyHunter

last game of the season tho, gotta love that.
Get to sit around and pay attention to the 12/15 games that have implications, then Eags come on ready to tear it up at 8:30

      • OregonDucker

Time to showcase our talent and innovative schemes on offense and defense. Time to put fear in the hearts of all opponents.

  • Joe from Easton

Eagles just need to get out to an Early lead. If Dallas is hangin’ around mid-way through the third quarter then we will have a potential problem brewing. The only way I see that happening is with a few Eagles turnovers / bad special teams play. If Orton goes out and keeps pace with our offense then we don’t even belong in the playoffs.

  • cliff henny

FU BSPN! now there pushing the Eagles caught breaks in schedule. Griffin being injured 1st week-he was hurt every week, Glannon 1st start-he’s better than Freeman, somehow snow benefited Eagles, and Rodgers/Romo, that one is true. every team gets the benefit of playing against injuries. also, every year team you think will be good end up stinking (Atlanta). how about getting to 9-6 with first 8 playing musical qbs, till foles grab job by the short hairs?

    • pjcostello

And don’t forget Reggie Bush and Adrian Peterson! It’s been a weird year.

      • BlindChow

        And Andre Ellington.

    • nicksaenz1

      #7 must work for them

      • BlindChow

Maybe they’re just disappointed the Foles Train hasn’t crashed yet.

    • Johnny Domino

Guess they’ll have to forfeit if Peyton is hurt for the Super Bowl.

    • theycallmerob

DAL didn’t have to play Rodgers. How’d that work out for them?

      merry xmas, all

      • cliff henny

every team gets break in the schedule. it’s such a ridiculous point. 1st game with Eagles, playing Cousins, McCown (who was ok then killed it against Cowboys, before then Chi was dying to get cutler back), Matt Mcgloin (think pryor would still be running for yards against Dallas’ defense).

    • jon h

yeah, 3 games in 12 days was a real break. And playing two divisional games right in the middle of the season also. They should go back to kissing the Red Sox ass every 5 seconds.

  • GEAGLE

At this very moment Sal pal is on sports center talking about how lucky we have been all year and how all of philly “is on pins and needles worrying about who the QBs will be”….I literally don’t even want to hear any news coming out of Dallas, it’s insignificant. this is all about us. EXECUTE and bring our A game, and the Cowboys A game won’t be enough to hang with us….
    ..
If we are going to be a contender, we cant play down to the level of our competition..it helps that our leader has a taste for 60 point BCS BLOWOUTS..we have to get to the point where we are all business, no matter who we play….
    ..
We aren’t the most talented team in the NFL, but we have seen that if we bust our butts all week listening to our coaches, play hungry, play fearless, play with discipline don’t shoot ourselves in the foot and be fundamentally sound then we can play with anyone….we can’t lose our minds and start jumping off sides, getting called for holding because we were out of positions committing personel fouls out of anger. we can’t let FOles pases tip off our fingers! we can’t lay the ball on the turf..
    ..
the DEAL is, commit less penalties then our opponent, turn the ball over less then our opponent, play with Fire while under control enough to execute…and we will have. Very good chance to win every game…it’s no different this week. Play a clean game, and we will be in the playoffs…

Get your popcorn ready, kick up your feet, and get ready to watch Dez Bryant’s epic Meltdown!!!

    • cliff henny

oh man, i want chipper to hang 60 on old man kiffen, the ginger and jerrah. Eagles’ fans are going to be shocked how bad/lost Dallas’ team is without Romo. know it’s not popular to be on eagles’ site and compliment Romo, but the guy is really good. think he might be more valuable to cowboys than rodgers is to green bay. GB at least has couple play makers on defense and smart coaching.

      • OregonDucker

Romo is the offense. Their scheme is nothing special so it’s left to the QB to bail them out. We have Chip, enough said.

    • Explorer51

Sal Pal and all the other talking bubbleheads seem to forget that our starting QB went down too and we’ve been playing our second-stringer…the fact that he’s playing lights out is just a bonus, no? I guess all the teams we have played with St. Nick should be considered lucky also…

    • jon h

guess who else isn’t the most talented in the league – new england. You’re absolutely right, who cares who the QB is or for that matter, who we’re playing. If we play like we did against the bears, it really doesn’t matter. They had the best WR corp in the league and one of the top 5 RB. Also have one of the best kick returners. It’s interesting the impact the Vikings game had on our guys. CHip basically said he didn’t trust them and you saw them show up the next game. Can’t wait for Sunday.

  • knighn

So, right now, the only remaining question: which QB will the Eagles crush on Sunday night?!
