Kelly: Foles Is QB Beyond This Season (Maybe)

chip-kelly-win-in-nfl-marqueeChip Kelly committed to Nick Foles beyond the 2013 season Monday, then let reporters know that his words meant absolutely nothing.

The Eagles head coach was asked if he expects Foles to be the starting quarterback beyond this season.

“As long as he can stay healthy,” Kelly replied.

That response raised a few eyebrows, seeing as Kelly would typically dance right around such a question. In his short time in Philly, we've learned that he won't tie himself to a QB unless he has to. By the sounds of it, he's grown weary of the same line of questioning and chose a different approach this time around.

"I've been asked the question a thousand times so I will say it: He's the starting quarterback for the next one-thousand years here," said Kelly, in full I-don't-give-a-damn-what-you-write mode. "And if I'm wrong next week then I'm wrong next week.

"I'm on a one-week deal. I don't think we have to do anything. I don't think Nick is going to come in tomorrow and say, 'I don't want to play anymore because I don't think you guys want me here six weeks from now.' The questions we get asked about it long-term, right now is not long-term. Long-term for us is this Sunday against the Detroit Lions, that's the deal. That's it."

To recap: Kelly said that Foles is his QB next season if healthy, possibly because he was bored. And if it works out that Foles is not his man next year and you try to hold him to these words, he could not care less.

Some other highlights from Kelly's day-after press conference:

-- Kelly was asked about the offense sputtering in the fourth quarter while holding a lead: "It's all the little things, but it's part of being a real good football team is you have to learn how to finish games. It's something that we have to continue to work on. There's gotta be things to work on every single week and that's something we'll really address this week.

"I think what happens is everyone in the stadium knows you are going to run the ball, so they're playing zero coverage. If you do throw and it's incomplete you stop the clock. Even if you [run] and don't gain a yard you're still running 40 seconds off the clock, so there's kind of a Catch-22 there, but people aren't playing the defenses that they normally play in the first, second and third quarter."

-- Are they still learning how to run an efficient offense when they get out of the up-tempo?

"No. I mean, we're always working on it but I think if you look at what we did in the Green Bay game and what we did in the Tampa Bay game, we're capable of doing it and we have executed it. In two games we were very successful at it, in two games we weren't good at it."

-- On Foles filling the leadership role on the team:

"I think the leadership aspect of all that stuff is extremely overrated. I think that's people writing stuff down. I think the biggest thing you need to have is followship. You have to have a bunch of guys that are all going to buy in.

"I think we all have the same vision. And when you have a great team and not a good team, you've got a bunch of guys that understand what the mission is. It's not when the crap hits the fan we look at one guy and say, 'What do we do now?' I think they all know what to do, and I think that's a credit to what this team is, in terms of us moving forward, is get a bunch of guys that understand what we need to do and what we need to get accomplished. "

Unless you got him to sign a legally binding contract after he said it, I wouldn’t put any weight into this comment. I think all we can say for sure if Foles is healthy he’s the starter for the rest of the year, and anything after that is a crapshoot.

    • GEAGLE

The only thing that can possibly happen is Chip drafting a QB high to compete with FOles…I can say with 1000 percent certainty that there is literally 0% chance of FOles being traded this offseason, no matter how he plays the rest of the way, and no matter what type of compensation is offered. Nick FOles WILL be in training camp THIS summer….The only question is will Chip still draft a QB high to compete with FOles…but FOles will be here next camp, and no mater who they draft, I doubt they will be ready to take the job from Nick to start the 2014 season..

Literally ZERO CHANCE that FOles gets traded THIS offseason,,,I’d bet my house on it,,,actually I’d give ANYTHING to find someone who would even take that bet

      • Andy124

I’ll wager my avatar against your house. I win, I get your house. You win, which you will, you get to pick an embarrassing avatar for me.

        • GEAGLE

Lol..I mean I don’t mean to go all out on a limb! but it’s the most valuable position in sports..and drafting one! no matter how sexy the prospect looks is probably one of the biggest crapshoots in sports. No one can survive trading away a stud young QB no matter what compensation you give up, and draft a QB in round who doesn’t turn out better than the QB you traded who was a known commodity..Chip worked hard to get here! I’m sure Howie did too. They simple CANT trade FOles this offseason, it’s one of these few things they could never survive if it goes wrong…

We see all these great prospect, we put the, thru these tests…but there is no test that can measure how their QB brain will translate to the pros where you have to process more intel any have Soooo much less room for error..

Even if he has few bad games down the stretch, NFL personel people will know that he should have never been playing this well this early to begin with. They understand that no matter how good it looks, there will still be some bad games ahead that he will have to get over…after what he has shown this year, he can have a few bad games and still be untradeable…At THIS point, the only way FOles can be traded is if they draft a QB, and then develope him enough to where they can even be somewhat comfortable trading FOles away, because after you spent ATleast a year with the rookie, you have seen enough to be able to make that type of gamble…

The soonest Nick can now be traded will be the 2015 offseason, and for that to happen, Barkley has to improve a ton! or we have to draft a kid this summer and develope him for a year ATleast before you even have the chance to trade Nick

          • Andy124

Yup. Also, the bet offer has now expired. I was getting a raw deal on that anyway.

          • GEAGLE

Lol…I wouldn’t wanna do that to you anyway Drew

          • Andy124

            Drew
            No.

          • Johnny Domino

            Maybe he meant Mark.

          • Andy124

I feel like I’m missing the punchline. Sorry.

          • GEAGLE

Went over my head…..didn’t mean no harm..Andy typically stands for Andrew. Drew is typically an acceptable alternative for Andrew lol….mark?..my bros name is Andrew,Always called him Drew is all

          • Andy124

            didn’t mean no harm
            Was never in doubt.

          • GEAGLE

My man..in my best Denzel washngton voice

          • Johnny Domino

Figured you as likely to answer to Drew as Matt Barkley is to Mark.

Obscure for a Monday, I know.

          • knighn

I wouldn’t make it all season or anything, but would love to see Andy124 with #7′s avatar for a while… or BBaS’s!

          • GEAGLE

Rather make him change his name to “Dutch jr, The Artist formerly known as Andy”

          • knighn

            Wordy, but solid!

      • Jack Burden

Granted there are still games to be played, but even if he regresses somewhat, considering how well Foles has played so far, how young he is, and how few legit quarterbacks there are in the league, if the Eagles decided NOT to make him their starting quarterback next year and to draft a qb early in the draft it would be unprecedented. You would have 20+ teams desperate to have him, and if the young quarterback they drafted struggled even a little bit, you’d have a locker room mutiny on their hands. Foles will be the QB in 2014, barring injury.

  • Kevin

Kelly’s focus and priority is right where it should be, why is that so hard for people (especially the media) to understand? Big picture, roster evaluation, long-term plans are for the offseason. Right now, it is one game, one week, one training session, one rep at a time. It makes a boring story line, but one effective coach.

    • GEAGLE

It makes me want to bang my head against the wall

    • Adam

      Sex sells, Kevin.

…I’m not sure what this has to do with sex but you get my drift. This is what creates the page views, clicks, buzz, all the stuff the media does best.

      • GEAGLE

Normally I get it…but the quality of work you find on this site is so high, that it can focus on quality, ignore the bogus “sexy” crap and still get traffic…and that’s probably the ultimate compliment you can give to a journalist…which is why it’s so frustrated when I see this stuff on THIS site, because Tim and Sheil do a quality enough job to get that traffic without selling out to the BS….if I were on a Les Bowan blog, I still wouldn’t like it, but I would understand why that nitwit would need to resort to sensationalized BS to get traffic…the quality of his work isn’t close to Good enough to survive without the BS..

Then again, I digress because it’s not really that I have a problem with an article being written about this..this came our Chips mouth, it’s relevant, so Tim and Sheil are being responsible by presenting this to us…my real beef is with the BONEHEAD who used his credentials and wasted one of his few questions, on asking this senseless question for the 1000th time..and I don’t even know who asked the question this time! I’m just keeping it real

        • cliff henny

bet if you asked Tim, he posted half because kelly is commenting on foles, and half because kelly’s a good sound bite. can hear him saying ‘a thousand yrs’ and thinking ‘jack@$$es’ at the same time.

          • GEAGLE

No, I completely agree!!! The question is just a microcosm for why I loathe the coverage I get on the team that I love so it made me go off on a general rant…but as a fan, I want to know everything that comes out of chips mouth, so it would actually be irresponsible in my eyes for Tim not to have written an article about this…but I can’t even put into words how mad someone asking this question makes me lol

          • Andy124

What if Tim’s the one that asked the question? :)

          • GEAGLE

Then so be it…I’m not the Rosey optimist people thought…after how things played out, I seem more and more like a realist..if Tim asked the question, I have praised his work a thousand times so he should be able to deal with a rare criticism…I mean how often can you really complain about the substance you get around here…
            ….
I actually credit Tim and Sheil I with stepping up the game of coverage we are getting in this city…they busted out the All 22′s and now all of the sudden, Mosher and some other guys had to elevate their game to keep up with Tim and Sheil, and you are seeing more journalists in this city actually putting in the work, all 22 style to deliver Quality that can keep up with Tim and Sheil…to my knowledge they were the first in this city to consistently deliver the all 22 breakdowns…am I correct?

          • G_WallyHunter

with a hard and exaggerated “thou”, definitely heard

      • Kevin

Thanks Adam, that explains how Ashley Fox still has a job….
I agree with you, media needs the clicks, the big story, the scandal and the locker room gossip (heck, besides SK’s in depth analysis, its why I refresh Birds 24/7 all the time). But I appreciate Chip’s single mindedness in his approach, even though it doesn’t make for good headlines (except when he is putting Les in his place)

  • GEAGLE

I’m baffled at how this question continues to be asked…I understand the question when it comes after a performance like the Dallas game…but for a fan so starved for eagles intel, it’s so damn frustrating to see people who have access, use one of the few questions they get to ask on such crap…
    ..
Question been asked a thousand times. He has Vick, Barkley and a kid playing out of I his mind on this roster..FOles has to play against Detroit…what in the world type of answer can people expect to get from asking that question? He has to depend on FOles next Sunday, are we expecting Chip to demoralize FOles or throw him under the bus? “This kid can be a good QB but it just won’t be here?”…”Nick is doing a good job but we can’t wait to draft another QB in round 1?”…

A thousand times this question has been asked, what answer could be good enough to make this question stop? I don’t get it!!

    • Andy124

Well, I guess we’ll see if “1,000 years” is enough.

      • GEAGLE

Be lucky if it lasts two weeks lol

      • macadood

is there a reason GEagle always capitalizes FOles like that?

        • Andy124

He’s actually typing F0les. It’s his was of saying that all the pro-F0les comments he makes are sarcastic, and he realy thinks F0les is a big ZERO. (Those are all zeros in place of the O. Doesn’t really look like it though.)

Actually, he typed it wrong in his iPad once and now autocorrect changes it to that everytime he types it.

          • macadood

            F(ront)O(ffice)les.

            what a chump

          • GEAGLE

Don’t understand what that means, but if it’s you taking a shot at me….ok

          • Andy124

Maybe Les from the Front Office is a chump.

          • GEAGLE

It’s getting to the point that so many people ask, that I’m starting to enjoy it :)… I need to come up with a cool story for why i do it, since the response is SOOO dissapointing lol

          • BlindChow

You should add a ™ to the end of it.

          • G_WallyHunter

good point, we all know GEAGLEs one of the biggest Foles haters of them all

  • theycallmerob

[posted in the zone read, but fits better here]

Great stat, courtesy of Kempski (link to the article for the explanation below)

In reality, the Eagles are 10 of 13 (76.9%) in the red zone with Nick Foles, not 10 of 17. That would put them at 2nd in the NFL, behind only Denver.

    • UncleCarm

Good article. I haven’t been back to that page since this one started. Worth the trip though. Thanks

  • Kev_H

In all fairness to Kelly, the question has to be very insulting- “you are a legitimate Super Bowl contender, largely because of historic quarterback play. So…are you going to change QBs and turn everything over to the next Mark Sanchez?”

    • Richard Colton

True, but to be fair, I think the question is probing the length of Nick’s leash. Would one more Dallas be enough to go back to MV? Two in a row? 6 quarters and a minor injury?

      • GEAGLE

If FOles can play. He will be the QB no matter what for the rest of the year…when you pull us out of the 3-5 slums, to a 7-5 division lead and decent wildcard positioning, and you have so I little experience under your belt, you earn that right to see what you can do with the amazing postion you got us

        • Richard Colton

sake of argument – say he turns in two clunkers back-to-back. Sub 200 yds passing, looks lost, couple of bad INTs, but the Eagles go 1-1. Would you consider Mick Vick at home vs Chicago?

          • GEAGLE

Hell no….he should never have been playing this good this soon to begin with….I understand that there will probably be more than two clunkers ahead for the kid before he really develops into who we need him to develop into…so if ii expect ATleast two clunkers, how could a panic if they happen now after a friggin 6-1 start and a 4 game winning streak, that broke the curse of the Linc? He earned this…remember where the ship was headed before Saint Nick blessed our season? No NFL coach or personel person will hold two more bad games against. Developing QB…Romo was friggin Undrafted, and been a consummate losing choke artist whenever it mattered yet he still getting opportunities lol…No way we should even be thinking of beating Cutler Marshall! Stafford Calvin in DECEMBER, the fact that it’s such a realistic chance with A kid so inexperienced, who still has SOOO much developing to do, is playing with house money…Vick won’t want FOles benched loL…WHY WOULD I?

          • Richard Colton

Good answer. +1 because “Cutler Marshall” and “Stafford Calvin” sound like two guys whose a$$ needs kicking at the Alpha Beta house.

          • Andy124

            Awesome.

          • anon

if dallas is 2-0 no, if they are 1-1, maybe.

          • OldDocRoss

No way you could go back to Vick. Partly because Foles is still young and you have to expect a clunker or two, partly because Vick is no guarantee of clunker-avoidance, and partly because history suggests Vick could well wind up injured in which case you’re back to Foles anyway.

Be fascinated to know what price they’d put on Foles in a trade though, not that Kelly ever would/should say.

Slightly off topic, but I loved Foles answer when he was asked about the overturned INT:

“horrible throw, horrible decision…..I learned my lesson there, but that’s what I try to do. I build a database with decisions like that and I learn from them. If I get the same look the next time I’ll make a different throw or I’ll throw it away.”

No half-assing his responsibility by saying it was a bad throw but “things happened quickly” or he was “trying to make a play for his team” or whatever. Just, “I screwed up and I’ll learn from it”.

Of course, saying and doing are two very different things but his attitude certainly seems spot on.

(credit: Peter King via Tommy Lawlor for the Foles quote)

          • GEAGLE

FOles is untradeable this offseason..this offseason he will literally be priceless

          • Richard Colton

speaking of priceless…look how expensive RGIII has become when you factor in next year’s 1st rounder (right now sitting at #2 overall). If someone offered me RGIII for Foles, I honestly don’t know what I’d say. Foles looks like the one with the brighter future right now.

          • GEAGLE

            I would HONESTLY say NO!!
            ..
Two knee injuries, FOles is more developed as an NFL passer with 20 games less experience then that selfish fool who is about to lose his locker room…while FOles is praising punters to wanna go out an boom ish for Nick!! Lol our locker room ADORES Nick..he had to unseat the popular Icon in Vick to earn this type of admiration from his team mates… I promise you THAT means something…this kid overcame everything, so fast, with so little support….we are no longer talking about Kolb and Hoying!

          • nicksaenz1

I’d hang up the phone after they made the offer.

          • Coatesvillain

Can we talk about how the media is handling young QBs now? It’s so unfortunate that once a guy struggles they throw him away. If they bounce back they treat it like that’s a great story as well. When it is all a part of the process of QBs.

Part of it is to fit more into the 24/7/365 football coverage, but people buy into it. It happened to Cam, it happened to RG3, and it’ll happen to any young QB who will struggle. I just wish there was more of a big picture thing going on.

Might be asking for too much.

          • Richard Colton

Yeah. You’re asking for too much. I can only muster up so much sympathy for young millionaires asked to shoulder a little stress. If that QB happens to be from DC, Dallas, or NY? None.

          • Coatesvillain

I’m not asking for sympathy. I’m asking for people to be less reactionary and use more common sense. But that’s not something we get in sports (or news coverage in general).

          • Richard Colton

Still no. No sense of any kind when it comes to Cowboys and Redskins. Just hate. If RGIII feels like he’s been treated unfairly by the media, he can pull up his socks and talk to Oprah.

          • G_WallyHunter

I agree, at this point I’d say Foles for the keeper.
Foles is a leader by actions, and his attitude is unreal. I’ll take that attitude, leadership, and decision making over RGKnee’s legs (leg) anyday.

Notice how many time Foles says team in his pressers, TEAM WIN, O LINE, DEFENSE, even mentioning Donnie and his 7 punts inside the 20. Mentions every player on the team but himself. You can’t teach that kind of attitude.
That’s who we need at QB. Guy’s a beast, screw RGKnee and screw the redskins and their terrible investment. Looks like they emerged from the basement for one single year, only to go plummeting down the stairs again

          • OregonDucker

TRUTH! Chip does not give up winners. Foles, as Tommy says, has a “mindmeld” with Chip. They are on the same page with respect to defense scheme weaknesses, and the associated decision tree. Couple that understanding with accuracy and you have a winner.

      • jshort

Take a look at the 2012 record…..we had 24 or more points twice….24 in the Ravens win…..33 in a Dallas loss. Foles was the QB. Vick never scored more than 24. Same coaches and system. He may have another stinker, but the chance for consecutive great games has been proven. Unless you consider a 120 rating in a game not so hot.

  • DirtyWaters

Man, can’t wait to see who the QB is in 3014. When the say he has a rocket or a laser for an arm, will they mean it? Will he or she even be human?

  • wydok

I like how Kelly has no patience for the media. Is this a new thing or how he did things in Oregon? Or were Oregon Duck reporters just more intelligent?

    • Adam

He’s always loathed them. He had a a team of former cops whose job it was to keep the media at bay.

      • cliff henny

say he better and nicer to philly press so far.

        • GEAGLE

Yeah he probably been nicer to our media lol…which is why these reporters better PRAY he doesn’t have too much success lol…as soon as he brings this city a SB, he will instantly become a GOD..and that’s when he gets to go all Bellicekian on the philly media….seems like Chip might have what it takes to build a successful NFL team..unless a reporter really doesn’t believe in Howie and Chip, they better find a way to yo their job while cultivating a decent relationship with our coach…
          ..
And in this city, as starved as we are for any football intel, it shouldn’t even be that hard..we want to know EVERYTHING about this team…you really don’t have to try and fabricate drama or play to the “sexy” BS to get our undivided attention..I would understand if we were in jaxsonville, but what is Les Bowan getting out of being a prick to Chip every chance he gets win or lose?…

          • cliff henny

jeeze, if he wins a super bowl he’ll be allowed to go all ‘the bear jew’ on les bowen in the middle of press conference.

          • GEAGLE

            LOL

          • Brian

Thanks for the effed up image in my head.

    • OregonDucker

Chip is way nicer to the NFL media. Either way, he does enjoy screwing with them because many of these clowns don’t care about him, the players or the team. Many of them don’t even know the game of football. Make no mistake, Chip is an odd DUCK. lol

  • Max Lightfoot

Chip Kelly said he only wants two things out of a QB: accuracy and consistency. So far Foles has has delivered both qualities. But would Kelly draft another QB in 2014? Maybe. Who knows with this guy? Love the guy but he is an enigma.

  • TNA

The Eagles under this regime will draft the best talent available regardless of position. If Mariota is available at pick 32 ;) they’ll pick him. Can’t say I don’t trust this regime to maximize asset values based on the latest draft and season.

  • Aussie Eagle

This last draft should have clued us in when they moved up a few spots to get Barkley in the 4th – a non-traditional Kelly QB. He just wants good, quick decision makers, and Foles is just that. Why take a 50/50 chance on one of these QB’s coming out next year?

That said, we may go out and select running/receiving QB’s in round 1, 2 and 3 and play them all at the same time to incorporate his ultimate playbook – Kelly’s Heroes. The old swing left, backwards pass across to the right and then either hand off to the LT or drop a bomb down the sideline to our streaking punter.

  • GEAGLE

Wilbon who has been hating on FOles, just said he has to be an MVP candidate..
    ..
This stuff means nothing, but the kid endured a ton of crap, I’m happy to see him start getting national respect…

Funny how those two weeks we couldn’t score a TD Chip was on the hot seat and Trestman was a genius..oh how the tables have quickly turned

    • IAteLunchToday

Not critiquing or anything like that. Only curious. Why do you spell Foles like FOles?

      • GEAGLE

When I first bought the iPad, I spelled it like that by accident and it’s been autocorrecting me ever since…everyone asks, so now it’s kinda become MY THING so I just don’t bother erasing it every time…if you see me use Nick or Folesy it’s cause I don’t feel like answering that question lol,!!but it’s cool when people are polite about it. Sorry I didn’t have a cooler reason for you! I’m trying to make one up :)

        • IAteLunchToday

Haha. Makes sense. Thanks for answering.

          • GEAGLE

            No prob

        • BlindChow

          You need your own FAQ.

        • jshort

Give him another cap for every record he ties or breaks….right on course for now,……did know the reason.

  • truehaynes

God I love igglesblitz and birds 24/7 comments sections, especially after a win. Do you guys think chip might just be unorthodox enough to put Vick in at the end of games. If your going to run the ball over and over again at least make a lb account for Vick, even if he’s just giving the ball to McCoy over and over. Do you guys really want our franchise qb keeping the ball because no one respects him? He’s not going to slide every time especially if hes going for the first down, and I dont want Vick as the starter again. And if the read lb does go straight for mccoy I’d rather have Vick than nick. I’m just saying if were never going to pass why have nick instead of Vick, besides the fact that it would seem rediculous to the football orthodoxy. I doubt nick would even mind, he knows he’s the starter and he wouldn’t lose his job no matter what Vick does, especially since we won’t see Vick as a passer. If only Vick would learn to slide
