Celek: Eagles’ New Methods Will ‘Change the League’

The Eagles have only had two days of practice under Chip Kelly, but count tight end Brent Celek among the players who are already impressed.

Celek was a fifth-round pick in 2007, only knew one way of doing things through his first six seasons, but is now seeing some sweeping changes at the NovaCare Complex.

The one aspect that has Celek’s attention so far is the way the offense will now call plays. He didn’t want to divulge too many details, but with Kelly’s focus on tempo, there appears to no longer be time for lengthy play-calls.

“From a communications standpoint, it’s going to change the league,” Celek said. “I’m not going to tell you guys how, but it will. Just the way that they can communicate plays in and get us the stuff, it’s pretty cool. It’s something that I never even thought was possible in the NFL. Seeing the stuff he’s doing, he has a reason why he does everything that he does, and a reason why each play is called what it is. And it all makes sense.

“I can’t say that we’re going to be super successful, but from a communications standpoint, it’s insane. I think it’s awesome.”

Greg A. Bedard of The Boston Globe wrote last year about the Patriots’ use of a one-word no-huddle, which was influenced, at least partly, by Kelly.

“Yeah, but it’s deeper than that. Like I said, I’m not going to get into it, but there’s a reason why he calls everything the way he calls it,” Celek said. “It’s pretty cool. It’s all thought out to the Nth degree.”

As Chris Brown of Grantland explained back in November, Kelly’s offense has three different speeds, but the point is to get to the line of scrimmage quickly and keep the defense on its heels.

“It’s almost like you don’t even have time to think about the last play because you’re on to the next one. It’s just forget about it, forget about it,” Celek said.

More offensive players will be made available to the media on the final day of the Eagles’ mini-camp on Thursday.

So much easier to buy into a system when things make sense and coaches give you reasoning

  • cliff henny

funny rumor going around has kelly giving each a protein shake after practice. as they come off field, it’s on a table with their names on it. these guys must be wondering where in the heck they are!?!?

    • BrickSquadMonopoly

Hahaha if you are serious that is hilarious and that makes me like chip even more theres a reason for everything! Hell i wouldnt mind a vanilla shake after practice

    • theycallmerob

Jimmy Kempsi (Allentown morning call/blogging the bEast) wrote an article about it this morning; http://blogs.mcall.com/eagles/2013/04/the-eagles-new-post-practice-personalized-smoothies.html

I’ll confirm this rumor. Saw the pics on twitter. All the guys had smoothies labelled with their name on it.. they all looked different, assuming they’re all made of different nutrients and supplements depending on the workout regiment/position they play. Chip also has the guys on sleep monitors as well. Really interesting stuff!

rob’s article below said they filled out questionaire with favorite flavors, so that would account for color. did you hear the d-jax quote when asked when the last time he got 10-12 hours sleep kelly wants him to get…he said ‘when i was 14’.

Words can not describe how excited I am to see these guys in action. Cannot wait.

I am so super pumped about our future. I know it absolutely all comes down to wins and losses but even just watching Chip’s most recent press conference was so refreshing for me. Actual witty banter. Like putting McLane on the spot was pure gold for me. Andy did a ton for this team but I sure won’t miss his constipated long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs interviews. GOD I hope things go well for Kelly!

What do I have to do to hear what Kendricks and Cox have to say?..

No player would dare question chips methods at this point, ATleast publicly…but I get the impression that the players that are raving about Chip and our future are being Genuine

welcome to the most George Jetson Franchise in the NFL…The future is Now…

I think, lLurie hit a Home run with hiring Reid because Reid was ahead of the league, which is what led to his success early on…The NFL caught up with Reid, then the league Evolved, and Andy remand stale, and got Left Behind…..Could Lurie have hit the Homerun again, and had the forsight to hire the next coach that will be ahead of the curve and revolutionize the NFL? if soooo, then we have a shot to do something special…Especially with the potential that our front office now has…I have never seemed as such an optimist before in my life….I have been made a believer in the chipster. it all just makes too much sense to not believe in him.

Agree that the FO is back to where it needs to be. Just like with the secondary, who stayed and who is gone says volumes…Reid and Banner=Namdi and DRC….

“It’s going to change the league”….You think they would’ve learned not to say stupid shit like this that gets everyones attention. Its April 18. I wanna see results on the field first before any of this talk.

    • SBeast

Saying it will change the league from a communications standpoint isn’t exactly proclaiming us Super Bowl Champs.

      • Zachary Kahn

I agree but im just scarred from last year. I don’t think saying things like that to the media is helpful right now because they’re already completely crazed with Chip Kelly.

        • morgan c

No need for talk. At all. Have we not learned at all?!

          • cliff henny

have 12-15 reporters firing questions at you for 20 mins, got to say something, cant ‘no comment’ or get fined. too much is made of what these guys say anyways. players are in no win.

          • Zachary Kahn

I fully agree with you. But Celek could have said “were doing new things communication wise, its some cool stuff, and it will be different”, instead of “it will change the league”. Thats dream team crap.

          • cliff henny

these guys are pro athletes, not PR reps. just not sure what these guys can say, half of it will be taken out of context, or cut-n-pasted to make it seem worse. go look at espn, they have article on what celek said, but they are misleading it as he’s saying it about offense in general, not how plays are called.

  • Minderbender

It’s like they each get their own custom Kool-Aid to drink lol
