Eagles Release Rau, Three Others

The Eagles today released four players: linebacker Ryan Rau, linebacker Marcus Dowtin, wide receiver Ron Johnson and cornerback Chris Hawkins.

Rau appeared in four games last season, playing on special teams. An undrafted free agent out of Portland State, he spent the first 13 weeks of the season on the Eagles’ practice squad.

Johnson was originally a sixth-round pick by the 49ers. The USC product suffered an ankle injury during training camp last August and ended up on injured reserve.

Dowtin spent last year with the Jets and signed with the Eagles after the season.

Hawkins signed with the Birds in January. He played in nine games with the Titans last season.

The Eagles now have 75 players on their roster. They are allowed to get up to 90 this offseason.

Rather have Rau than the 3 stooges: Akeem, Chaney, and the talentless one..
Mathews is the luckiest SOB ever. Gus Bradley would not have been down with that Casey Mathews shit

    • UKEagle99

You spoke his name!!! Noooooo…. The talentless one is the modern day Freddie Kruger!

75 players plus 9 draft picks means we can add 6 more

I have a feeling these new coaches have a wealth of knowledge regarding some under-the-radar UFA’s. At least, Im hoping. Can’t wait for camp!

      • Geagle

ROB…I sooooo CO SIGN your statement. I have a feeling we will get some 7th round, Undrafted, late round Richard Sherman type GEMS this year

        • I am hoping that is the case. Likely to be true with all the former college coaches brought in.

  • TheCatalyst

It was weird to me that the FO signed Hawkins without having a HC installed in the first place.

    • Howie Rosemen is pulling the trigger in Free Agency and the Draft, who else could have pulled that move?

  • Richard Colton

now what am I going to with my Ryan Rau jersey?

    • UKEagle99

eBay! Some schmuk in the UK will buy it not realising he’s been released!

Chip is definitely making over this team in his image. He is gradually cutting off the dead wood. A few more will go before the draft. I don’t think 15 slots are enough for draft picks, UDFA’s and any FA’s that may be signed. Advice to Sims, Lindley and Vandervelde – don’t sign any long-term leases.

not to mention harbor, polk, p. hunt, t. edwards, some of the 7 cb’s, kopa/wang/some OT, and some of the 12 (!) WR.
      camp battles should be fantastic.

Yup, pretty young and Kelly is going to have them playing with an edge/mean, exciting to say the least. I think the players will be drawn to Kelly’s swagger and it be infectious.

        • theycallmerob

That’s my dream scenario. We need that winning, aggressive culture back

      • dislikedisqus

Kelly has a high opinion of Polk, having coached against him several times.

        • theycallmerob

I guess, and personally I like Polk too…but I don’t see the spot of #3 rb gauranteed (on any team, really). Especially if someone’s grabbed late round- like polk was. Competition will be great at almost all positions.

I’m surprised they are reports the igg’s are courting Jordan, matthews and chaney both still on the roster and Rau let go. I still don’t see why those guys have a spot on a NFL roster. I’m hoping Roseman/Kelly turn over the roster except the few NFL players/elite they had in two years. Players like Coleman and cooper need to disappear and not be invited back.

I think Kelly will install his sense of urgency, up tempo in the NFL and it be trend setting. But he is right, it has to be in your entire program from top to bottom, not just on Sundays. They can relax when they retire.

    • Don’t agree that Coleman needs to go. The guy is a 7th round pick, and while he has not played up to starting quality he’s far out play his draft pick. At the very least he’s earned another camp to prove his worth. We could do a lot worst when he comes to a 3rd or 4th safety. He still holds value.

You’re not going to see guys like Matthews, Chaney etc cut until at least Chip seems them in pads. They have more resources (higher picks) invested in these guys and have shown glimpses (in the regular season, not preseason like Rau). There’s zero reason to cut them before then. These guys that he cut today are complete fringe guys.

Fact is he’s got to deal with some players that he may not exactly like. He can’t completely gut the roster and fill it up with FA’s and undrafted rookies. It will be a gradual process… for example he may not like a guy like Coleman, but can live with him for another year while he re-does the roster.

Rau was the best LB on the team last preseason. Tough and physical.

    • The tallest midget..

A bad week for Ron Johnsons. Their unemployment rate really went up.
