Reid: ‘I Take It Personal’

Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid.Andy Reid is tired of answering the same question after every loss.

Does you expect to finish out the season as the Eagles’ head coach?

“I haven’t been told any different, so I’m going to keep going, but you can keep asking me because I appreciate those questions,” he said after the team’s 38-33 defeat to the Cowboys. “I’m sure you’ll be the first to know.”

The writing is on the wall and has been for weeks now. The Eagles lost their eighth straight and are 3-9 on the season with four games left. Offensively, they played better, and you can tell Reid looks at that as a positive. Still, he doesn’t know quite what to say as he endures the most difficult season of his career.

“I can’t stand here and tell you I’m proud of it,” Reid said, when asked if he was embarrassed. “We lost the game, so no matter how you cut it, we lost the game and I take it personal. It’s my responsibility, so I can’t tell you that I’m proud of it.”

As for injuries, safety Kurt Coleman suffered a chest contusion, but X-Rays were negative. He’ll have an MRI Monday, Reid said. And Brent Celek has an abdominal contusion, but he returned to the game.

The O-line played at a pro level!!!!

Has anyone really looked at the salary cap? We’re under 21 million for this year. Yeah, I know we’re supposed to be over next year, but Mike Vick’s salary pretty much takes care of most of that, even with the dead money. Overall, if you look at who will absolutely be gone, we’re looking at having something like 30 million at least in cap space. Now is that Andy’s doing or higher up (cough cough Jeffrey Lurie). I don’t know how people expect this guy to win with this team right now. He’s got rookie starters at RB, QB, OT, Guard, D-line, Nickel CB, Punt returner, etc. I mean, does anyone realistically believe that any other team in the league can win with that make-up? And to be honest, he’s getting those guys to play at a high level. It’s the defense that is consistently letting him down. Unfortunately, I think Bowle’s has to go even before the season ends or at least let him run his own defense instead of Juan’s – it isn’t fair to him or to the paying fan.

We were losing with Vick, McCoy, and our starting d-line. I’ll give you he o-line, though. As for CB and punt returner, if Boykin and Johnson aren’t effective, they shouldn’t be the starters. And it was Reid’s decision to start them.

These are great points. Although everyone wants Reid to go and all… He’s been playing the last 5 games with AT THE VERY LEAST 5/11 offensive starters out, you have to give him the benefit of doubt there. Then people can say he didn’t ensure depth on the roster which is also true, but this team has been ravaged with injuries this year plain and simple. You can’t expect to win games when you have 4/5 Olinemen out with injuries and then your QB and star RB (and star WR) all get injured.

I don’t think salary cap room can be directly tied to talent on the team. The Patriots always have salary cap room, and always have a talented team. This team under Lurie has had an organizational philosophy to draft well, lock up promising young players well before they hit free agency to get them at a discount, and spend selectively but aggressively in free agency. I agree 100% with this philosophy and it worked well for a long time until they started drafting poorly. I don’t think you should spend to the cap limit just to look like you’re trying hard.

My guess is Andy gets a Banner-esque “advisor at large” tag until he gets a new gig or they get a new coach. Let the bet-hedging begin!
